Preventing Skin Breakdown
Parafricta® garments are designed specifically to reduce friction and
associated shear, thereby reducing the potential for pressure ulcers and
friction lesion development. They are compatible with, and should be used
adjunctively with, methods for reducing the effects of pressure, e.g. pressure
relieving mattresses and Repose® Foot Protector/Wedge.
Parafricta® garments are lined with an innovative patented fabric which
is smoother and much more durable than silk, thus reducing the burning,
tearing and pulling effect on skin from movement against the support surface.
“Consider using
silk-like fabrics
rather than cotton
or cotton-blend
fabrics to reduce
shear and friction”
EPUAP 20141
Patients benefiting from the use of Parafricta® garments include those at
risk of pressure ulcers or skin damage e.g. with limited ability to reposition
independently (such as in orthopaedic and neuromuscular conditions); with
reddened skin; with repetitive movements and with fragile skin (such as
following burns or at end of life).
Parafricta® garments can also be used on patients with existing dressed
wounds to aid retention of the wound dressing and hasten recovery.

patient needs to help reduce the incidence of pressure ulcers and friction
lesions.

Demonstrated Clinical Effectiveness
The Parafricta garments have repeatedly demonstrated clinical effectiveness since reduction in oedema and
inflammation under the epidermis of patients’ heels wearing bootees was first demonstrated.2 A major study comparing
cohorts of patients at risk of pressure ulcers (Waterlow score >15) that were and were not given Parafricta® garments,
showed improved outcomes in terms of PU incidence, location, grading and outcome of ulcer on discharge and length
of stay.3
A recently published report of the routine use of the bootees in than acute hospital setting reduced the incidence of
grade 2 heel pressure ulcers by 78% and the ratio of grade 2 heel pressure ulcers to ulcers on other sites was reduced
from 0.67 to 0.24.4
“The Committee recognises that
Parafricta Bootees and Undergarments
show potential to reduce the
development and progression of skin
damage caused by friction and shear
in people with,or at risk of, pressure
ulcers.” NICE 2014 5

Cost Savings
Parafricta® garments offer great potential for cost benefits when used effectively, particularly since they are washable
and reusable. The report of the NICE Medical Technologies Evaluation Programme noted that the number of days spent
in hospital was several days shorter for the Parafricta treated cohort in the key clinical study.3 The health economic
model developed therefrom estimates that the potential net saving per at risk patient per hospital stay is £595 (with
a range of possible outcomes around the central estimate depending upon number of times each item is reused and
other variables).5
In the community the savings will be associated with fewer Tissue Viability/District Nurse visits to treat ulcers.
The health economic model estimated the net saving per at risk patient per year is £2510.5

Parafricta Bootees*
The Bootees are designed to protect fragile skin the heel, foot and ankle against the damage caused
by friction and associated shear. They can help to prevent the occurrence of, and aid the healing of,
pressure ulcers and friction lesions. They are available in two styles: easy to slip-on and a hook & loop
closure (which is suitable for patients with swollen or bandaged feet). Particularly useful for those at high
risk of heel pressure ulcers associated with using the heel to reposition or with repetitive movements.
Parafricta Undergarments*
The Undergarments are designed to protect the sacrum, buttocks and hip areas against the damage
caused by friction and associated shear. They can help to prevent the occurrence of, and aid in the
healing of, pressure ulcers and friction lesions. Styles include easy slip-on briefs, boxer shorts and a hook
& loop closure briefs for patients with limited mobility. Particularly useful for patients repeatedly sliding
down the bed, chair or wheelchair. The boxer style may also help to prevent chafing (intertrigo).
