Concert and performance series
Expect an extraordinary listening experience including electronic music and New Music with wellknown artists in surprising places. This is a collaborative project between the International Music
Institute Darmstadt, the Institut für Klangforschung at the University of Art and Design Offenbach
and the Institute of Contemporary Music at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts.

Under the baton of this year's Bayreuth Festival conductor, the hr-Sinfonieorchester plays Ludwig
van Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and – together with the renowned ATOS Trio – the Triple Concerto,
which calls for virtuosity and chamber music skills of the highest order. In the second part, Robert
Schumann's Symphony No 3, the "Rhenish", brings the audience into the German Romantic era.

The Gewandhausorchester of Leipzig is one of the world's most reknown orchestras – its roots go
back to the 15th century. To mark the 100th anniversary of its first foreign tour, the orchestra will
recreate the programme performed exactly 100 years ago, with works by Ludwig van Beethoven,
Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner.

What has Mozart got to do with today’s civil war refugees? War and flight shaped Mozart's opera
“Idomeneo” just as they do our modern times. In this extraordinary production by Verein Zuflucht
Kultur, refugees collaborate with a professional orchestra, choir and soloists as equals. BandArt,
with its international line-up of musicians, will play under the baton of Gordan Nikolic, first solo
violinist and concertmaster of the London Symphony Orchestra. The renowned soloists are tenor
Manolito Mario Franz, mezzo soprano Cornelia Lanz, and sopranos Josefin Feller and Tatjana
Charalgina.

Lydia Steier, an American opera director working for the first time at Schauspiel Frankfurt, has
developed this musical evening, loosely based on Michel Ghelderode’s “La Balade du Grand Macabre”.
“Kein schöner Land” (No country more beautiful) portrays the ups and downs of an ordinary family
and satirises everyday life in Germany. It mixes popular music from the 1960s and 1970s with old
German folk songs, Bach and Schubert

The Deutsche Bundesbank began collecting contemporary art when the institution was established
in 1957. Over six decades, it has assembled an extensive collection of paintings, works on paper,
sculptures and room installations. As part of the European Cultural Days 2016, the Deutsche
Bundesbank will be showing a small part of its collection in the historic Grossmarkthalle area of the
ECB’s main building. In addition to this exhibition, guided art tours will be offered at the Bundesbank
headquarters (www.bundesbank.de/art_collection).
Florian Hecker works with tones and sounds that he generates by processing electro-acoustic signals,
condensing them into complex compositions and room installations.
The exhibition “Formulations” will present an extensive sequence of Florian Hecker’s sound works in
a complex dramatisation of acoustic events and sound objects. The installations are adapted to the
architecture of the MMK 3 exhibition space.

An old donkey on the run sets out for Bremen to become a town musician. On his journey he meets
an old hunting dog who has been turned out because he is unfit to work. A cat and a cockerel join
them, and they decide to become musicians together. This musical fairy tale, loosely based on
the story by the Brothers Grimm, offers great entertainment for young and old – and delivers an
important message: a team of very different individuals can achieve a lot if they work in unison.

I belong? In his new book, Eberhard Rathgeb tries to answer this question by looking at his father's
life story. The answer brings to light a tangle of complicated emotions. And it shows what home

The internationally acclaimed best-selling author Peter Prange will read from his new, Germanythemed epic novel. He gives a detailed and authentic portrayal of D-Mark-era Germany over three
generations. What dreams and hopes did people associate with the new currency when it was
introduced on 20 June 1948? Prange's family novel is a true German fairy tale that evokes our own
biographies.

The DANCE ON ENSEMBLE takes a pioneering approach to developing perspectives for the creative
potential of experienced dancers. The ensemble unites dancers whose rich experience and depth of
expression promises a unique dance adventure. The project brings to light a core issue of our times:
the value of elderly people.
Christopher Roman, former associate artistic director of The Forsythe Company, is the artistic director.
The first evening will see choreographies by Matteo Fargion and William Forsythe. The second evening
will see a choreography by Rabih Mroué. All productions are performed in Frankfurt for the first time.
