Peace I bequeath to you, my own peace I give you
In our Gospel this weekend, there are several interrelated elements. Jesus
promises that those who love him, will keep his words and that he and the Father
will come and make a home with them. Jesus then promises the Father will send
the Advocate, the Holy Spirit to the disciples. The Advocate will be sent in Jesus’
name and the Spirit will teach the disciples everything and remind them of all
that Jesus had said. Jesus then promises them peace, a peace the world cannot
give. Finally Jesus declares that he is going away to the Father, that the Father
is greater than he is and that he has said all these things before they happen so
that when they do, you may believe.
The key to understanding all these interrelated elements is the Holy Spirit. We
are challenged to see God as God has revealed the Divine nature. God is
Trinitarian, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Three persons,
one nature.
The Father speaks a Word, and that Word is the Son. The Father and the Son
love one another, and that love is the Holy Spirit. That the Holy Spirit is love, is
our best way of expressing the great mystery of the nature of God. Love brings
peace and contentment, it brings energy and drive, it changes a dwelling from a
house to a home.
When we respond in love to Jesus and when we are faithful to his words then
the love between the Father and the Son will be found in us, that the Father and
the Son will dwell within us and God will make a home with us. When God is with
us, that love will help us see from a different perspective, it will “complete” our
knowledge and it brings a confidence and a sense of fittingness that allows the
words of Jesus, to be recalled and acted upon, not just piecemeal but in their
entirety. The presence of God and the power of God in our lives gifts us with
peace, a peace that no earthly authority can bestow. This great gift of the Holy
Spirit, requires the Father and the Son to be ‘together.’ Jesus has to end his
earthly existence, his dwelling among us, so that in returning to the Father, the
Holy Spirit can be fully given.
The Holy Spirit as love challenges and enlivens us to be even better God’s
disciples. We are invited to see how love helps us to make good decisions and
allows us to express truth to help ourselves, others and our world come to
acknowledge God.
Of course there can be a danger that we deceive ourselves and rather than
being messengers of God, we proclaim human wisdom or are overly influenced
by evil. That is why discernment is such an important component of faith. We
must discern the effects of the Holy Spirit, so that we may know we are doing
God’s Will and not just deluding ourselves and others. From our Gospel reading,
two elements that I would like to highlight is the sense of God making a home
with us and that peace that Jesus gives.
I hope that each of us can know the difference between a house and a home
and experience the great gift of peace that Jesus bequeaths. A peace that the
world cannot give. I consider myself very fortunate to experience that peace,
whether it is in prayer, in ministry or even thinking back to my Ordination day.
May each of us know that peace and be witnesses to God.
May God bless you and all those whom you love.

KEEPING MERCY ALIVE
Acts of the Apostles (15:1-2, 22-29)
Then certain individuals came
down from Judea and were
teaching the brothers, “Unless
you are circumcised according
to the custom of Moses, you
cannot be saved.” And after
Paul and Barnabas had no small
dissension and debate with
them, Paul and Barnabas and
some of the others were
appointed to go up to Jerusalem to discuss this
question with the apostles and the elders.
Then the apostles and the elders, with the consent of
the whole church, decided to choose men from
among their members and to send them to Antioch
with Paul and Barnabas. They sent Judas called
Barsabbas, and Silas, leaders among the
brothers, with the following letter: “The brothers, both
the apostles and the elders, to the believers of
Gentile origin in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia,
greetings. Since we have heard that certain persons
who have gone out from us, though with no
instructions from us, have said things to disturb you
and have unsettled your minds, we have decided
unanimously to choose representatives and send
them to you, along with our beloved Barnabas and
Paul, who have risked their lives for the sake of our
Lord Jesus Christ. We have therefore sent Judas
and Silas, who themselves will tell you the same
things by word of mouth. For it has seemed good to
the Holy Spirit and to us to impose on you no further
burden than these essentials: that you abstain from
what has been sacrificed to idols and from blood and
from what is strangled and from fornication. If you
keep yourselves from these, you will do well.
Farewell.” (New Revised Standard Version)
Seek to understand the meaning of the text through
Biblical scholars and commentaries such as this one
from Sr Kym Harris osb:
In this reading of Acts, we have the summary of the
most crucial event to take place in the Early Church:
the preservation of unity between two seemingly
disparate groups, namely, the Jewish Christians who
still adhered to the Law and the Gentile Christians
who were granted faith without any attachment to the
practices of that same Law. The initial tension
seemed like an almost impossible impasse: how
were both groups to revere their own special calling
from God and yet maintain unity with the other
group. As so often happens in Church history, it was
a little bit of heresy which began the difficult road to
clarification of doctrine and practice.
The men who came down from Judaea to Antioch
revered the Law so much so that they misunderstood
it. Circumcision was never the means by which a
person was saved. A person was saved by the
Covenant that was God’s gracious free gift to
Abraham and his many descendants. Circumcision
was the sign, or rather one of the signs, by which a
Jewish male showed that he adhered to this
Covenant. The assertion of the men from Judaea
shows the tendency very devout people can make
of taking their own religious practices so seriously
that they mistake the sign for the reality: God alone
saves - the role of religious practice is to remind us
constantly of this, not to offer salvation.
The Church in Jerusalem took the issue of how the
Gentiles were to be incorporated into the Church
very seriously and, though its discussions are not
included in this reading, the letter given well sums
up the result of their deliberations. In the midst of
the extended discussion, they had a sense that
they were led by the Holy Spirit and they offered
their radical response with a confidence based
upon this Spirit’s guidance: the Gentiles were not
to be burdened with the observance of the Law.
So what’s with the dietary regulations that they do
stipulate? Blood? Strangled animals? With this
basic minimum of dietary regulations, Gentile and
Jewish Christians would be able to maintain table
fellowship with each other. As Jewish Christians
had to respect the Gentile calling, so the unity of
the Church required Gentile Christians to respect
the calling of the Jewish Christians. Concessions
had to be made by both in the interests of charity.
Any group, any Church group that exists for any
length of time faces tensions. The example of the
early Church shows us how to deal with such in a
creative loving way: in a spirit of prayer, having
honest, respectful discussions and with a
willingness to make concessions based on love.
