Tutorial 3 – 1100 pound bred heifer
20month old, 1100 pound bred British cross heifer. 7 months pregnant.
1.0 lb body weight gain, January conditions -20o C current, -10o C previous. Calf birth weight 85 lbs.
Winter hair coat. 5 km wind. No ionophore. Expected slaughter weight 1450 pounds. No ionophore
1. Describe the animal and Environmental parameters using Animal type tab.
2. From the feed table tab, select timothy hay, dried distillers grains (DDGS Wheat), limestone, barley grain,
pea straw, fort TM salt + selenium, Vitamin ADE 10 million and Vitamin E 50,000. Change timothy name
to “Ted’s field”. Reduce the NDF values in the pea straw and timothy hay to 56%
3. Balance Ration using feeds selected – Supplied Dry Matter Intake not to exceed Recommended Dry
Matter Intake. The ration should have 10% protein (minimum) . Body weight gain should be about 1.0 lbs
per day.
4. Check Ca:P Ratio at least 1.5:1, 2:1 is better. Meet minimum P requirements first.
5. Review the NDF as a % Body Weight. Press the F1 Key for additional Information.
6. Feeding Info Tab – 100 heifers fed for 65 days on this Ration. Add $0.45 per day in the Yardage Box.
7. Save to Ration Summary – name the summary 110 lb bred heifer.
8. Open Reports | Ration Reports and select the Ration Summary to View.
9. Print the Ration Summary (Print to a PDF file)
10. View the other Reports to see what information they contain.
11. Create a grain mix with the barley, distillers grain, salt and vitamins. Open Feed Mixes, provide a
Batch Name and Batch Size. Create the Mix.
12. Create a second ration report. Print off the third page for the grain mix inclusion rates.
13. From Top Menu Bar, select Edit | Uncreate Mix
14. Create a summary report – Reports | Ration summary report | View Summary Report
15. Save the Ration File to the Hard Drive – File | Save | Ration Filename

Click on Feed Table tab

by clicking in the “Add” box
beside the required feed.

Click on the light bulb to change between
energy systems (TDN / DE and Net energy)

Dry Matter Intake should be less than or equal to the Recommended DM Intake
Adjust the As Fed (lbs) of the different feeds so the TDN “Recommended” is close
to the amount “Supplied”

Use the scroll button or the directional arrows to view
more of the spreadsheet and more nutrients

- Adjust the Package Weight (weight of the bale, bag, block, etc.)
- Select the Type of Package from the Drop Down List
- A Waste Factor can be Included (5% to 25%)

Enter a name for the file such as : Replacement heifers

Create a ration report by clicking on the Report heading.
A drop down menu appears. Choose “Ration Report”
Two boxes appear in succession on the screen. 1) Select
“Yes” to save the ration information for the summary report.
2) Fill in the name you wish to use for this ration. Click Ok

To create a batch mix, click on the Feed mixes tab.
Enter this information in the
Feed Mixes Section
Check the appropriate In boxes
to include the feeds in the
Batch Mix
Include batch size and name
of the mix you are creating.
Click the Create Mix Button
when finished

The mix that was created appears at the top of the feeds list.
Nutrient content of the mix is from the individual feeds in the
mix and quantity of each feed in ration
Feeds included in the ration, but included in mix appear as “0”
values

When a mix is created, page 3 of the ration report contains the
inclusion rate for each ingredient to make the mix.

To Uncreate a mix:
From the Top Menu Bar
select Edit Uncreate Mix
All feeds and feeding levels
are restored when a mix is
uncreated .

Creating a summary report: From the Top Menu Bar on the ration page:
Select - Reports and from the drop down - Ration summary report
Choose the rations you want to include in the
summary (Check to include)
When finished View Ration Summary Report

From the Top Menu Bar select : File Save
Type in a name for the file: Bred Heifers
Click Save
