Buffalo Public Schools awarded
USDA Farm to School Planning Grant
The Buffalo Public School (BPS) Farm To School initiative brings
healthy, local, and fresh food to schools in Buffalo. The initiative
connects schools, farms, and community partners to improve student
nutrition through agriculture, health, and nutrition education; and to
strengthen our economy by supporting local farmers and food
producers.
CCE Erie County has a key role on this grant. One of our staff, Cheryl
Thayer, will be working closely with the BPS Food Service Director to bring more local foods to school
lunches. Another key piece of this grant is youth leadership. Sara Jablonski, Urban 4-H Educator, will be
working with the Youth Advisors Council (or YAC, our Urban 4-H club) and other youth development organizations, the Massachusetts Avenue Project and the Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities initiative, to support YAC teen leaders as they learn and educate other students about agriculture and nutrition. They may also
work with the BPS Food Service Department to review school menus and recommend and test new foods.
YAC is excited about this opportunity to help improve the food at Buffalo schools!

On Sunday October 12th 2014, the Wyndale Wranglers
held their 4th annual Pink Ribbon Trail Ride in support
of Breast Cancer. We had around 45 people participate
in the ride and everyone there was dressed in pink from
head to toe, even the horses were pink. There were riders of every age and activities for everyone to do. New
this year was the Extreme Obstacle course where people
had to work with their horse to get them through the obstacle. After everyone was done riding we had a hot dog
lunch and gave away prizes. Megan Barry, Liz Wierzba,
and Hailee Glair all received trophies for the Trail Challenge Course, Riley Wierzba was given a prize for being

With the perfect weather for our ride this year’s event

ECTA Update:
The Erie County 4-H Teen Ambassadors held their Meet and
Greet for the 2015 year on December 9th. We had a great time
meeting each other, planning out our schedule for the upcoming
year, and having some friendly games of bowling! At the meeting was Tessa Buratto and Amy Krawczyk, our advisors, and
members Valerie Weisbeck, Paige Schrems, Christina Mohney,
Jayden McCormick, Maggie McGuire, and Eva Tapani.
We first sat down for some serious business, in which we discussed our plans for volunteering through and promoting 4-H, as well as what is expected of new
members, then it was time to celebrate Christina’s
birthday! After we had a great time with birthday
celebrations we started our bowling games, which
featured some interesting bowling techniques, and
lastly we made a plethora of holiday cards for patients at Absolut Care nursing home. We are excitedly looking forward to the upcoming year and
can’t wait to show Erie County what ECTA is all
about!

Beef:
Beef Orientation was held in November and we have many new members. Our program is certainly growing
and we should have a quality show and sale again this year. We will be back scanning all the market steers

carcass hanging in the cooler for inspection. This opportunity will be done in the month of June.
Steer Ownership date: All 4-H market steers must have been in the possession and
care of the 4-H member by January 1, 2015 to be eligible to participate in the 2015 program. All calves must have a negative BVD test and the BVD ear tag will be used for
identification of your project. COMPLETE Project registration forms and a copy of
the BVD certificate were due in the 4-H office to be eligible for participation.

Sheep
Our sheep program is starting to get busy. Your fellow breeding sheep exhibitors are all getting busy with
the arrival of their lamb crops.
Sheep Orientation is scheduled for Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. at Cornell Cooperative Extension
of Erie County. Come to learn about your upcoming program year, get your records and meet new friends.
Sewing Workshop: We will again be holding leadline sewing workshops to help you with your garment for
the 2015 fair. We will have a sewing expert or two on hand to help with squaring up your material, reading
and placing your pattern, sewing and to answer your questions. Get shopping now for your wool material as
when spring comes wool is very hard to find. A simple pattern is all that is needed—don’t get too complex
if this is your first sewing adventure. Remember your garment will be eligible for exhibition in the Youth
Development Building, the fashion show, textile review (if you have it finished in time), the leadline contest
at the fair and if made for material of at least 80% wool then it can go to the NY Make It With Wool Contest
in Rhinebeck, NY in October—so you can get a lot of opportunity out of one project. Interested? Details
will be announced at the Sheep Orientation.
Coming the weekend of May 29-31 is the WNY Market Lamb show at the Erie County Fairgrounds. This
show will be held in conjunction with the Swine Preview Show. Members that register an animal to show
will automatically receive 1 sheep meeting credit. Members that choose to go and watch must submit a
show program cover and a written report within 5 business days of the event to receive credit for a meeting.
