The initiative connects schools, farms, and community partners to improve student nutrition through agriculture, health, and nutrition education; and to strengthen our economy by supporting local farmers and food producers. CCE Erie County has a key role on this grant. One of our staff, Cheryl Thayer, will be working closely with the BPS Food Service Director to bring more local foods to school lunches. Another key piece of this grant is youth leadership. Sara Jablonski, Urban 4-H Educator, will be working with the Youth Advisors Council (or YAC, our Urban 4-H club) and other youth development organizations, the Massachusetts Avenue Project and the Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities initiative, to support YAC teen leaders as they learn and educate other students about agriculture and nutrition. They may also work with the BPS Food Service Department to review school menus and recommend and test new foods. YAC is excited about this opportunity to help improve the food at Buffalo schools! We had around 45 people participate in the ride and everyone there was dressed in pink from head to toe, even the horses were pink. There were riders of every age and activities for everyone to do. New this year was the Extreme Obstacle course where people had to work with their horse to get them through the obstacle. After everyone was done riding we had a hot dog lunch and gave away prizes. Megan Barry, Liz Wierzba, and Hailee Glair all received trophies for the Trail Challenge Course, Riley Wierzba was given a prize for being The Youngest Rider and The Farthest Person Traveled was from Tennessee. With the perfect weather for our ride this year’s event was a huge success, allowing us to raise around $800, all of which is being donated to Roswell Park for Breast Cancer Research. Thank you to all of our fellow 4-hers, Southtown’s Feed and Milk House Country Crafts for your support and donations that helped make our ride this year a huge success. -Ashlee Hohman Around the World Night A winter social event for clubs & independent members February 20, 2015 (Snow date: February 23, 2015) The 4-H Office, East Aurora 6:30 – 7:15pm.
