Today the Battle of Hastings is probably the one date in history that every adult and child can recall. The 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings will feature an international event on the original battlefield. In 2016 the audience may see over two thousand foot soldiers, archers and cavalry engaged on Senlac Hill. Participants from different countries will be there and if you are interested in this historical event you can join the celebrations. In January 1066 the childless King of England, Edward the Confessor, died. Harold Godwinson, head of one of the leading noble families, was crowned new King of England. Edward’s cousin William, Duke of Normandy, also claimed the English throne. To fight off Harold, William crossed the channel and landed on England’s southeast coast. Then he marched towards Hastings with up to 15,000 foot soldiers, archers and cavalry. 2016-4 15 20 25 30 35 40 On October 13th, when King Harold arrived with little more than 5,000 foot soldiers and only a few archers at a field near Hastings, he positioned his army. Harold had no choice but to fight a defensive battle. At first, Harold had a great advantage over William because he was on top of a hill, but William used a trick. He pretended to retreat and Harold’s army saw their chance to get the horses and weapons and ran after them. That was a mistake because William’s army regrouped and attacked them. Harold’s army stood no chance of winning the battle because they were now off their hill and not armed well enough. William attacked and retreated three times until Harold was defeated. On Christmas Day 1066, William was crowned the first Norman king of England, in Westminster Abbey, and the Anglo-Saxon phase of English history came to an end.
