North Carolina’s state orchestra, an orchestra achieving the highest level of artistic quality and performance standards, and embracing our dual legacies of statewide service and music education Report to the Community 2 015/16 Dear Friends, Across counties and across generations, nearly everyone who grew up in the state of North Carolina in the past seven decades shares a common thread. We all experienced the magic of the North Carolina Symphony (NCS) as children—myself included. Years later, as Board Chair of this excellent artistic and educational organization—regarded as one of the finest in the country—I fully appreciate the significance that this childhood experience carries throughout people’s lives. In the Symphony’s travels throughout the state, we are told countless stories from those who fondly remember hearing orchestral music for the first time when the Symphony came to their schools. Today, they are eager for world-class musical and cultural opportunities—and NCS delivers. Looking back on the past year, you’ll find that NCS takes pride in bringing the world’s top artists to North Carolina, while simultaneously embracing homegrown talent and developing strong partnerships with our fellow community organizations. Our innovation and statewide impact earned the Symphony one of four spots in SHIFT, a prestigious national festival at The Kennedy Center taking place in March 2017. Whether you’re a “Symphony kid” like me, or whether your Symphony story has just begun, thank you for taking pride in your North Carolina Symphony. In our 83rd year of service to North Carolina, your Symphony... 21,000 new ticket-buyers 52,000 Was enjoyed by 4th and 5th graders 250,000 people 83,000 returning friends Brought some of the world’s top talent to our state 80,000+ people reached via broadcasts 13,000 Jean-Yves Thibaudet Renée Fleming 1 __ 2 of our concerts took place outside of the Triangle Taught 4th and 5th graders Johnny Mathis Zuill Bailey Gave voice to new art introducing audiences to 20 works by living composers—including co-commissions by composers with ties to North Carolina 2 Sarah Kirkland Snider, Salisbury from Murphy to Manteo attendees at free community events Sincerely, Don Davis Board Chair, North Carolina Symphony Society Traveled 18,000 miles throughout the state—an average of 50 miles per day! These are some of the many moments that highlighted our commitment to providing the highestquality cultural opportunities in North Carolina. Multimedia Concert with the Museum of Natural Sciences The Symphony created a new partnership with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, performing Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with beautiful images and aerial shots of North Carolina state parks projected in high-definition at Meymandi Concert Hall. The partnership continues this season with another multimedia concert featuring Holst’s famous suite The Planets, performed with projected imagery and video of our solar system. World Premiere of a Work Inspired by North Carolina Composer Sarah Kirkland Snider grew up visiting her grandparents in Salisbury, North Carolina; the emotional, nostalgic music of her new piece Hiraeth, co-commissioned by NCS, recalls those times and is accompanied by a film with footage of the Piedmont region. The Symphony gave the world premiere of Hiraeth in September 2015 and brought the work to Salisbury in February 2016. This season, we perform it at The Kennedy Center as part of SHIFT: A Festival of American Orchestras. First Appearance at Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts High-Flying Holiday Spirit at New Cirque Show NCS traveled to Franklin, North Carolina, filling all 1,500 seats for our first-ever performance at Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts. The concert included light overtures and waltzes, as well as Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, featuring our 2015 Kathleen Price and Joseph M. Bryan Youth Concerto Competition winner Kiffen Loomis from nearby Asheville. The performance was made possible thanks to the advocacy of North Carolina Senator Jim Davis. Thousands of people celebrated the holiday season with the Symphony— from traditional carol singing, to music from the movie Frozen, to a new Cirque Musica show with familiar classical favorites and jaw-dropping acrobatic performances. Aerial flying, balancing feats, juggling, and more dazzled concertgoers at this family-friendly show. Two Evenings with Pop and Jazz Legend Johnny Mathis The soulful Johnny Mathis took the spotlight in the spring, crooning his suave ballads and chart-topping hits. There was a wonderful feeling of intimacy to the performances—even with 1,500 people filling Meymandi Concert Hall each night! The platinum-selling artist delighted audiences young and old, and North Carolina Symphony musicians raved about their experience working with one of the world’s greatest talents. Many were eager to take photos during rehearsal breaks, including violinist Suzanne Kelly (pictured at right). “Wow! It was amazing to hear how different all of the instruments were and how they could come together and make a beautiful sound. It was really cool to hear how the orchestra can create a mood and a story.” –Elisa Rowinski, 5th grade student, Laurel Park Elementary School, Apex, North Carolina Music for Learning, Music for Life The North Carolina Symphony leads the most extensive music education program of any U.S. orchestra, engaging more than 52,000 4th and 5th graders in the 2015/16 season. In alignment with the music curriculum set by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, the Symphony provides training and resources for teachers, sends small ensembles into classrooms, and performs fullorchestra concerts for students at Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh and in school auditoriums around the state. The Education Concert theme “What Makes Music ... Music?” teaches core musical components such as melody, rhythm, and dynamics. Growing Together with Our Youngest Audiences The Symphony’s Music Discovery program—a part of PNC’s Grow Up Great initiative—welcomes preschoolers and their families for storytelling and music, in collaboration with libraries, museums, and Head Start programs across the state. Music Discovery has grown 50% since it launched three years ago, expanding into rural areas of the state and offering 30 events in 2015/16. Striving to make music education accessible to all, events held in counties with high Spanish-speaking populations included Spanish translation. A Model for Music Education Partnerships I looked around the hall during the Stravinsky, Brahms, Beethoven, Schubert, and Rossini, and was moved to tears seeing these kids bouncing in their seats and pretending to direct. Music has the power to transcend culture and position once education becomes a part of the experience. –Dooley Ezzard, music teacher, Wilson Preparatory Academy, Wilson, North Carolina In 2015, the Yale School of Music’s Symposium on Music in the Schools recognized the North Carolina Symphony and Wake County Public School System for their inspiring partnership. Working together, the Symphony and the school system have greatly increased opportunities for middle and high school students in recent years. Programs for 6th through 12th graders include open rehearsals, where students observe the process of shaping a piece of music for a performance; master classes, through which young musicians are coached by NCS musicians and guest artists; and Ovations, which organizes student ensemble performances for NCS audiences before Raleigh Classical Series concerts. Assistant Principal Percussion Matt Decker reads to preschoolers at Music Discovery. Middle school students give an Ovations performance before an NCS concert at Meymandi Concert Hall. Bringing Music-Lovers Together for a Good Cause Throughout the year, the North Carolina Symphony brings people together in support of excellence in music performance and music education. These special events are not only a treat for those attending—the funds they raise ensure that people throughout North Carolina have opportunities to experience the Symphony. Gala Performance with Superstar Renée Fleming Renée Fleming, one of the most acclaimed singers of our time, performed for the first time with the Symphony in October 2015, at a Gala Benefit Evening dedicated to the memory of former Symphony Trustee Nan Ogburn Cullman. While the Symphony fills concert halls, sales cover only a portion of the cost to stage performances and fulfill our educational mission. NCS is grateful to our dedicated donors and sponsors; gifts to the Annual Fund from individuals, corporations, and foundations increased by 8.3% in 2015/16. We also met the State’s Challenge Grant again last year. This challenge provides $2 million once we have garnered $9 million in non-state funds— meaning we earn an additional 22 cents for every dollar of your support! Currently totaling more than 140 generous music-lovers, the Society welcomed 11 new members in the 2015/16 season. $ 11,265,062 Events such as the Friends of Note luncheon and String Fling gala supported the Symphony’s music education mission. Violins painted by professional artists, and even a guitar signed by James Taylor, were auctioned at String Fling in New Bern.
