We all know much about Rotary and what the Rotary Movement accomplishes around the world. The question is who else knows? This is a subject that has come up many times over my 7 years as a Rotarian. We have 3 clubs in this city and we all contribute significantly to our community and the world, we know however many people in the City either don’t know about Rotary or are unaware of the significant impact we have her in Thunder Bay and beyond. Perhaps we are too humble. In the Rotary year 2014/15 your board has worked hard to ensure that the club gets broader coverage in the City. Sante and Bruce have worked together and with the allocations committee to capitalize on media opportunities and we have been pleased with the tremendous coverage we have had this years. Of course our very own Clint Harris remains very supportive providing us with regular space in the Chronicle to support spreading the Rotary buzz. The boards goal is not to simply get recognition for all the hard work the club does in the community as much as that feels good. Our goals are sending the Rotary message, attracting new members, selling more house tickets and raising more money at other fundraising event to allow us to continue to do good in the world and achieve the mandate of the Rotary Movement. For me, despite our struggles to recruit and retain new members and to ensure we have enough younger members to secure a string future for our club, there has never been a time when Rotary has been more relevant in the world. With wars, In This Issue Rotary Awareness Rotary Headquarters Paul Harris (1945) Ebola Famous Rotary Quotes Rotary Response to Ebola Rotary has been heavily involved in a project to eradicate polio and has achieved much success and recognition for this hard work.. The Ebola outbreak has been somewhat personal for our club due to our International Project to help rebuild and provide desk and chairs for the young children of Regent School in Sierra Leone. World Wide Rotary has been involved in the Fight against Ebola. Rotary has invested much resources in Nigeria through its work to eradicate Polio, these investments helped the government stop the outbreak in this country. Rotarian's are supporting this fight with hands on support, advocacy and financial contributions to help fight this horrible disease that is leaving children without parents and parents without their children. Our thoughts and prayer s go out to all the Children at Regent School. We look forward to seeing the school filled with new desks and chairs all occupied by children ready to learn Ebola This week I had the pleasure of giving out dictionaries to the grade 3 students at Hold Family School. We took this opportunity not to just promote literacy but also to promote Rotary. We talked about our project in Sierra Leone where we have helped repair a school and provide desks and chair for the students. The children seemed to relate to this as I explained that children in some countries don’t have access to education , text book or have schools with toilets that flush, or proper desks and chair to sit at. I explained that the students were not attending school at the moment due to the Ebola Outbreak in their community but the new desks and chairs would be there for them when they were able to return to. I was amazed at all the questions, such a bright group of children. What is Ebola, and then a little girl at the back of the room asked me “Where did Ebola get its name” I had no idea and suggested their teachers were brighter then me and perhaps they would know!! Curiosity got the better of Craig Sandberg who researched the name and found out that the name came from the Ebola River in Africa!! So far, about morals, I know only that what is moral is what you feel good after and what is immoral is what you feel bad after.” ― Ernest Hemingway, Death in the Afternoon Famous Rotary Quotes “Friendship is a natural and willing servant….There is no reason…why the great power of friendship should not be harnessed to do its part in the world’s work.” Report of the President, 1912 Rotary Convention, Duluth, Minnesota, USA “The best antidote for international fear is international understanding; the best way to cultivate international understanding is through business and social intercourse.” Message to 1928 Pacific Rotary Conference, Tokyo, Japan The greatest thing one finds in one’s travels, the soul-satisfying thing, is that [people] in their native countries all weep with the same spirit, the same feeling, the same happiness and contentment.” — Why the Convention?, THE ROTARIAN, January 1925 Holy Family Students receive their Dictionaries
