REFUSE BINS To reduce illegal dumping, which can cause health hazards and rat infestation, in Actonville and Wattville 240 litre refuse bins have been handed out. Approximately 64 000 bins were given to households in the two areas, as well as parts of Brakpan. The bins were received by residents after they produced their most recent municipal account, or South African ID. It was one bin per household, and those asking for more need to apply. This is part of the Metro’s plan to streamline the waste management processes to ensure that effective and efficient service is rendered. Anyone wanting to apply for more than one bin can contact the Waste Management Services depot at 011 999 6825 or 011 999 6830. © 2013 Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. classrooms and a vegetable garden was started that will be sustained by the school to help in its nutrition programme. The Metro also touched the lives of the elderly and those with disabilities who are cared for by Zonkizizwe’s Peace Maker Home Based Care by donating 100 chairs, a laptop and ablution facilities and painted the four containers in which the centre is based. In addition, the centre will have a food garden which will be managed by Umsinsi Health Care. TREK4MANDELA Members of the Ekurhuleni Trek4Mandela Challenge Joshua Awesome, Richard Mabaso and Sibusiso Vilane celebrate reaching the highest mountain in Africa on Mt Kilimanjaro. This determination to accomplish the feat reflects Mandela’s resilience over adversity. The Metro partnered with the team to reach the peak and to raise funds to sponsor 500 underprivileged school girls through the provision of a year’s supply of personal hygiene products. The good news is that they surpassed their target and are able to sponsor even more girls.
