67 MINUTES
FOR MANDELA
Executive Mayor Cllr Mondli Gungubele planting a tree at Winile
Secondary School during the 67 Minutes for Mandela Day.
As part of the Nelson Mandela International Day, the City
of Ekurhuleni and its partners worked together to give a
dilapidated Winile Secondary School in Zonkezizwe a total
facelift as part of the response to the 67 minutes for Mandela
Day of giving back to humanity.
Executive Mayor Cllr Mondli Gungubele on 18 July led the Metro
and its partners, SABC2 and Daily Sun, on a face lifting journey
which is expected to run until November when renovations to the
school are complete.
July 18 was declared by the United Nations as International Nelson
Mandela Day. This day is not meant as a public holiday, but as a

day to honour the legacy of the country’s former president Nelson
Mandela and his values, through volunteering and community
service on this day, which is his day of birth.
Joining Ekurhuleni were the Red Ants and Umsinsi Health Care
workers who worked tirelessly to improve the conditions of the
schools with the view of making it conducive for learning and
teaching.
Work done on the day included replacing broken windows
and dysfunctional toilets, fixing the pavement and painting of

needed items.
As part of the 67 Minutes for Mandela, the
police force donated two microwaves, three
ironing boards, three irons, three heaters
and two desktop personal computers with
monitors.
In the spirit of giving, they also undertook
to ensure that the school is never short of
basic essentials to help the learners.
REFUSE BINS
To reduce illegal dumping, which can cause health hazards
and rat infestation, in Actonville and Wattville 240 litre refuse
bins have been handed out.
Approximately 64 000 bins were given to households in the
two areas, as well as parts of Brakpan. The bins were received
by residents after they produced their most recent municipal
account, or South African ID. It was one bin per household, and
those asking for more need to apply.
This is part of the Metro’s plan to streamline the waste
management processes to ensure that effective and efficient
service is rendered.
Anyone wanting to apply for more than one bin can contact
the Waste Management Services depot at 011 999 6825 or

classrooms and a vegetable garden was started that will be
sustained by the school to help in its nutrition programme.
The Metro also touched the lives of the elderly and those with
disabilities who are cared for by Zonkizizwe’s Peace Maker
Home Based Care by donating 100 chairs, a laptop and ablution
facilities and painted the four containers in which the centre is
based.
In addition, the centre will have a food garden which will be
managed by Umsinsi Health Care.

reaching the highest mountain in Africa
on Mt Kilimanjaro. This determination to
accomplish the feat reflects Mandela’s
resilience over adversity.
The Metro
partnered with the team to reach the
peak and to raise funds to sponsor 500
underprivileged school girls through the
provision of a year’s supply of personal
hygiene products. The good news is that
they surpassed their target and are able to
sponsor even more girls.
THE GREENEST CITY
Ekurhuleni has been declared the greenest city in South
Africa, following the announcement by the National
Department of Environmental Affairs during the Greenest
Municipality Competition (GMC) in July.
The competition initially started as the Cleanest Town
Competition focusing on implementing the National Waste
Management Strategy looking at principles of reducing, recycling
and reusing waste materials.
Ekurhuleni met the criteria to be crowned the best, which
includes good waste management plans, policies and
strategies; institutional arrangements and political support within
municipalities on environmental programmes; greening initiatives
including landscaping and planting of trees and community
involvement on environmental projects and programmes.
Ethekwini came in second with City of Cape Town third.
