Every month is special. Every month that we get to spend
time with our loved ones, friends and family is special! And each
month is unique in its own way. March is unique for a couple of reasons; of course Easter and St. Patrick’s Day fall within this month
but it is also National Women’s History Month and Social Workers
Month. Women have come a long way in this world, with the help
of many special ladies we definitely would not be where we are today! A few of the women who struggled to fight for equality for
women include Susan B Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Lucy Stone, Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Alice Paul, and Harriet Tubman. This year, 2016, the theme is “Working to Form a More Perfect Union: Honoring Women in Public Service and Government”.
This March, we’d like to encourage all of you to participate in this
month with us by honoring and thanking women who work in Pub-
Girl Scout Month
lic Service and Government industries. Please also make sure to
Red Cross Month
thank a social worker, whether it be your own, someone you know,

or even someone you do not know. This Healthcare industry would
not run as smoothly without our social workers! Happy St. Patrick’s

Note from Heather:
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colorectal Cancer is the
fourth most common cancer in the United States and the second leading
cause of death from cancer. Colorectal cancer, or colon cancer, occurs in the
colon or rectum. Colon cancer, when discovered early, is highly treatable.
Even if it spreads into nearby lymph nodes, surgical treatment followed by
chemotherapy is highly successful. If everyone age 50 and older were
screened regularly, 6 out of 10 deaths from colorectal cancer could be prevented.
It’s important to know what to watch for. In its early stage, colorectal cancer
usually produces no symptoms but the most likely warning signs include:
Changes in bowel movements, including persistent constipation or diarrhea,
a feeling of not being able to empty the bowel completely, an urgency to move
the bowels, rectal cramping, or rectal bleeding
Dark patches of blood in or on stool, or long, thin, "pencil stools"
Abdominal discomfort or bloating
Unexplained fatigue
Loss of appetite, and/or weight loss
Pelvic pain, which occurs at later stages of the disease
If you should notice any of these warning signs it is important to visit with
your Doctor. It is important to get screened regularly as per your Doctor’s advice.
There are also some other things you can do to help lower your risk of getting Colon
Cancer. These things include: Being physically active, maintaining a healthy weight, not
drinking too much alcohol, and not smoking.

and Easter. I can’t wait for the time to spring ahead and the days start getting longer. I am not looking forward to picking up all the tree limbs that have come down
in my yard.

I don’t know about you but I am so happy to see the snow melt away, hearing
the birds sing, the days getting longer and moods getting a little brighterJ. Summer is around the corner and not a moment too soon!! So for all of you that
helped out with this by celebrating “hoodie-hoo” day February 20th, thank you!!!
I think it worked. For those of you asking, what is Gayla talking about….? February 20th was national Hoodie-hoo” day, the day to chase away old man winter and to welcome spring by going outside and YELLING- HOODIE-HOO!!!!
March 20th
Join Courtyard Estates in Pleasant Hill for an Easter Lunch that starts at 11:30
am and a day of treats and sweets with an Easter Egg hunt that will start at
1:00. Come join the fun and meet Joe Bunny!
Last but not least, Courtyard Estates 2nd annual “Light up the Night”. I am
super excited to start the journey of this event. This year it will be held at our
Pleasant Hill location in June. Courtyard has started the first steps by sending
out Sponsorship letters and planning the days activities. We are looking for donations, sponsorships, and volunteers. If you are interested in being a part of
such a great event please contact me for information. This is a special event
that will benefit the Iowa Chapter Alzheimer’s association. I will have updates
each month as we
move forward
with our plans.
