Breakaway Youth Ranch
Hope in the Heat
We love hearing about how God is using this ranch to help
and encourage people. We thought you might too . . .

Oh where do I begin? I was blessed in so many ways at BYR!
First I'll try to sum up the feel of the place for you with words -- peaceful, inviting, and relaxed.
There is beautiful scenery and everything has a creative, wild-west feel to it.
Faith and character-building are important here. The mentors are caring and attentive to the
kids, and the matches made between kids and horses has such a natural feel to it.
I brought one of the kids I work with out to the ranch for General sessions and my daughter
participated in their Junior MINTs (Mentors in Training) program. I sometimes pulled weeds
with other moms, watered plants, sketched the
horses, took pictures, and visited about how God is
blessing this place!
What an awesome experience for us all!
So much gratitude, Leia Miller

I enjoyed coming to the ranch to be with you and all the other helpers. My personal favorite
was picking out any horse I want. My favorite horse was Cookie. "Why?” you ask. Because
she is the color of chocolate chip cookies and her dapples look like chips. I learned about
respect and being kind to the animals. Please tell Zack and
Natalie I said “hi.” Bob you remind me of a fishing guy I saw
on TV. I would like to do this again next year. Thanks!

One of my favorite moments this summer was helping a little girl ride all by herself.
Throughout the summer, this precious little girl would patiently wait her turn in line to
be led around the ranch on a pony ride while the main sessions were in progress.
She was always helpful in lining up the younger kids and maintaining a safe environment when horses were around. On the last day of the summer, she finally got a
chance to ride in a session. We carried out our chore, caught our horse, and tacked him up. She learned how to
warm him up all by herself and then hopped on. Her smile lit up the entire ranch. She rode her horse through cones,
barrels, and even trotted all by herself. She was so proud and frequently called out, "Look at me! I'm riding all by myself!" This sweet little girl made me glow with pride. It was an honor and a privilege to help her explore what she is
capable of, encourage her in her doubts, and celebrate her success.
BYR is an incredible place to be a part of with its passionate and caring leaders and its patient and willing horses.
This ranch provides a peaceful and safe environment for kids to not only learn and grow in their horsemanship skills,
but also in their relationships with people and with God. It allows kids the opportunity to explore and express themselves, and also challenges and encourages them. I am so grateful for this place — the peace, rejuvenation, and
encouragement it has brought me — as well as the opportunity to know, teach, and love the kids that come to BYR.

I remember one day, over half way through the summer, that one of the younger MINTS
brought her Bible for the first time. She had been listening and participating more and more as
the weeks progressed. With much excitement she showed me the Bible and a list of her sister's
favorite verses she had carefully tucked inside. During the Bible lesson, she painstakingly
looked up each reference by going to the contents to see what page number the book started
on, even refusing the help of a friend, determined to learn her way around the Scriptures. I was
filled with joy to see this young lady growing in her love for and desire to know God's Word. ~ Jenni
From a MINT. . .
One day while I was at Breakaway Youth Ranch Jenny had me ride a short, dark-brown horse named Dixie. Dixie was being stubborn and
kept pulling on the reins and backing up. It was quite the challenge. I kept persevering and eventually was able to set her back on the
course I wanted. Through that experience I realized how often I act just like Dixie. I do not always want to do what God tells me to do.
Instead I often pull away from Him and do my own thing. God then has to keep trying to get my attention and set me back on course.

Horse of the Month
“Flash, Flash, hundred yard dash.” I’m not sure how many times that line from
Zootopia was quoted when I would introduce kids to our arthritic, old horse
named Flash. Perhaps you were just tempted to quote it yourself? :)
Flash came to us last fall from a little girl who had outgrown him. We are so glad
she gave him to us! He took lots of kids on adventures this summer, and we wish
he could have been here for more. Unfortunately, due to a badly broken leg in
August, we had to let him go. He was here for such a short time, but what an impact he made in the months he had! He helped rebuild confidence, he brought joy
and hope to many, and we will miss him.
“. . . [Y]ou do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time
and then vanishes away. . . Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.” James 4:14 & 17

Thank you to all of you who responded to our cry
for help! We had many delicious baked goods to
sell, lots of silent auction donations that went for a
good price, and many helping hands in the arena.
You helped us bring in $3000 for the ranch! We
could not have done it with out you. Thank you for
your continued and varied support of the ranch!
