Clean Paper & Newspaper Where does it go? Recyclable materials are taken to Waste Management’s Cascade Recycling Center in Woodinville where it is sorted by a combination of machines and people. Newspaper, inserts, mail, envelopes, cereal & dry food boxes (remove liner), paperback books, magazines, catalogs, phone books, nonfoil wrapping paper, frozen food boxes, juice boxes, milk, soy milk & broth cartons Shredded paper is difficult to separate from other recyclables. It is accepted in yard/food carts. Cardboard Glass Jars & Bottles Remove packing and flatten Empty and rinse out all food residue Labels OK Plastic Bottles, Jugs & Tubs Empty and rinse; no lids Ignore numbers on plastic containers. Put only bottles, jugs, tubs and cups in the recycling. Milk, juice & pop bottles, yogurt, dairy & margarine tubs, shampoo & conditioner bottles, bathroom & kitchen cleaner bottles, detergent & fabric softener bottles, pill bottles Plastic bags contaminate other recyclables. Bag plastic bags and take them to a grocery store for recycling. Even better, use reusable bags. Aluminum & Tin Cans Scrap Metal Empty and rinse out food residue, labels OK Soda cans, food cans, non-hazardous aerosol cans Small non-working metal appliances, pots, tools, etc. Limit 2 ft. x 2 ft. x 2 ft., 35 lbs; no wood, plastic, or rubber attachments; no sharp metal Loose lids cannot be recycled. If you really want to recycle your lid, please place it in can and pinch in the sides so the lid will not fall out. Q Q Q Keep recycling loose. Empty clean recyclables out of bags and boxes into the cart so that they can be easily sorted. Put all recycling in blue recycling cart. Use bins only for overflow. Food scraps and yard trimmings are processed into compost and sold at home and garden stores. More information: cgcompost.com 2. Empty your container into the food/yard cart frequently. 3. Layer food scraps with yard waste, newspaper or shredded paper to absorb liquids. The City of Federal Way offers discounts on food scrap containers and free compostable bag samples. Non-recyclable Plastic Take-out containers, Styrofoam, packing peanuts, caps, lids, stretch wrap, empty motor oil & antifreeze containers, plastic bakery & meat trays, plastic plates & utensils, empty prescription vials, garden hoses, and diapers Plastics that are shaped like a bottle, jug, tub or cup can be recycled. All other shapes of plastics (lids, trays, etc.) should be placed in the garbage. Non-recyclable Metal Caps, lids, aluminum foil, foil trays, oil containers, paint cans with hardened paint (remove lid), sharp or greasy metal, clothes hangers, small non-working plastic appliances (toasters, microwaves, coffee makers, etc.) Use rechargeable batteries. Many stores accept rechargeable batteries for recycling. Use kitty litter or paint hardener to solidify latex paint. Please: Q Bag all garbage. Q Double bag pet waste and litter, packing pellets, and cold ashes. Garbage charges are based on container size. There is a charge for extra garbage that doesn’t fit in your container with the lid closed. Bulky items like mattresses, appliances, and building materials can be picked up by special arrangement for a fee. Q Weight limit: 32-gal limit is 65 lbs for your collector’s safety. Not sure? Used Motor Oil Recycle Curbside: Place oil in sealed gallon jugs with your name and address on your recycling day (limit 3 gallons per pickup). Auto Parts Stores: Most auto part stores will accept used motor oil for recycling. Call ahead for quantities and restrictions. Also accepted at the Auburn SuperMall Wastemobile (limits apply). Caution. Warning. Danger. Poison. Many items with these words on the label are considered hazardous. These items cannot be placed in the garbage, recycling, yard waste or down the drain. (Empty containers can be placed in garbage.) Please properly dispose of unwanted items. Not sure? Q Used Cooking OiI Used cooking oil can be recycled into biodiesel. Pour slowly and with care into on-site collection tank and take your containers with you to recycle at home. It can be placed in your garbage, but only if it is solidified first. Mix in cat litter, shredded paper, sawdust or paint hardener. Once paint no longer ‘flows’, leave the lid off the can and place in your regular garbage. (Oil-based paint still needs to be taken to the Auburn SuperMall Wastemobile for proper disposal - see hazardous waste page.) Second hand stores and clothing banks will accept clothing and household goods in reusable condition. Most mailing stores (such as the UPS stores) accept clean packing peanuts for reuse. Needles & Sharps Online Materials Exchange Reusable household items can be sold or given away. Try posting a free ad. You will be amazed at what other people might want. Q Used needles and sharps are dangerous in garbage because they can injure sorters and spread disease. If weather conditions prevent safe collection, up to twice as much material will be accepted on your next regular collection day for each container not emptied. Waste Management is going even greener – watch for cleaner and quieter collection trucks coming soon. These new trucks run on clean natural gas so they are better for the environment and quieter, too. Customers tell us we’re so quiet they no longer even hear trucks on collection days.
