This is known as the annual “Miles for Meals” walk which provides funding for the Henry County Council on Aging and many programs which benefit our senior population. Jim Howell, one of the many participants from last year, says, “My wife and I have walked for health reasons for many years at OUTSIDE: Locust Grove Easter Eggs and Bonnets The City of Locust Grove will host their annual Easter Egg Hunt (ages two through sixth grade) on March 22 at the City Hall Complex. The festivities will begin at 11:00 a.m. and will include an Easter Bonnet/Hat contest. Adults as well as children are invited to participate in the contest. Cities hold Sunrise services March 23 The city of Stockbridge will hold an area Easter Sunrise Service at the Patrick Henry football field beginning at 7:00 a.m. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be moved to the First Baptist Church of Stockbridge. McDonough will hold their annual Sunrise Service on the square beginning at 7:00 a.m. In case of inclement weather, the services will move to the McDonough First UMC. the Hidden Valley Senior Center and at other walking trails in the county. However, the ‘Miles for Meals’ program gives us both a chance to walk with others to help provide meals and other services to the senior adults who cannot be as active as we are.” Howell and his wife will “definitely be walking again this year,” he reiterates, “It is a great thing for the whole community, people of all ages, to get out and do.” The Miles for Meals program began in 1992 as a part of the Atlanta Food Bank Walk for Hunger, however due to the tremendous response, the Henry see MILES, page 6 Walkers in the 2007 Miles-For-Meals Walk helped provide over 60,000 meals for the Henry County senior adult community. Special Photo Hands of Hope opens dental clinic On March 14 the Hands of Hope Clinic treated its first dental patients in the new dental facility located at the clinic. “This is a significant step in addressing the critical dental care needs of our uninsured population” said Dr. Gary Bartholomew, Dental Director of the Hands of Hope Clinic. “We have been diligently working on the development of a single chair facility at the clinic since receiving a grant from the Georgia Department of Community Health in 2006 that funded this operation.” The Hands of Hope Clinic provides free medical and dental care to residents of Henry County that are uninsured. “This is a glorious day” said Janet Turner, Founder and President of the Hands of Hope Clinic. “The provision of dental care has always been a dream of mine and through the dedicated efforts of Dr. Gary Bartholomew, my dream has come true!” The dental office is fully capa- ble of delivering a wide range of dental services to the community. The dental facility consists of a single chair set up that is complete with a wall mounted and a free standing Panoramic X-ray unit. “This is truly a first class operation” said Dr. Bartholomew “and it is amazing that a clinic so young is so advanced regarding the service it can deliver such a needy population.” With its dental facility and service program firmly established, the Hands of Hope Clinic is quickly moving to the forefront of the free clinic network; a network of free clinics that exist throughout the state which address the need of the underserved. To date, the Hands of Hope Clinic’s dental program has provided more than 400 appointments to clinic patients. These appointments have been provided by the graciousness of Henry County’s dental community that supports the Clinic’s initiatives. To date, more than 30 dental practitioners volunteer services through the Hands of Hope Clinic. The Hands of Hope Clinic is supported by the efforts of volunteers from our medical, dental and professional communities.
