LOYALTY

Character First Lesson
LOYALTY
Today we will be talking about loyalty and why this is an important Godly
character trait that we should all strive to possess!
Determining the Definition
Questions to ask the group:


What is a definition that you would give for loyalty?
Who would you say you are loyal to? How are you loyal to them?
Dictionary Definition of Loyalty - Faithful; firm in allegiance; personally devoted to a
sovereign, government, leader, etc. (Chambers Dictionary)

Can someone give an example of loyalty?
Life Example of Loyalty
Loyalty of Canada Goose Parents
Canada geese traditionally build their nests and lay eggs in April. The female lays eggs over
several days at the rate of one egg per day. Once five or so eggs have been laid, the mother
goose begins incubating them. Because the eggs must be kept between 100.4°F and 101.3°F,
she keeps them well-insulated and leaves the nest only for brief periods of time during the 28day incubation.
One unfortunate spring in Alaska, an unseasonably late snowstorm struck. As the cold, fluffy
flakes began to fall, dozens of geese snuggled their eggs tightly beneath their warm bodies. The
snow continued to fall. Soon, the wind whipped up a terrible blizzard. Three feet of snow fell
that day, completely burying the surrounding area. Yet the mother geese did not abandon their
eggs.
Within a few days, the spring sunshine reappeared and began to melt the snow. But it was too
late. Scores of dead Canada geese were discovered once the snow melted. They had suffocated
under the snow rather than abandoning their eggs.

** This is a sad but clear picture of loyalty! These geese were willing to go to any
lengths to stay loyal to their eggs. Can you think of a Biblical story that shows this
kind of loyalty?
Biblical Example
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego
(Read Daniel 3 in preparation for this)
Background Story: At this time the King was Nebuchadnezzar, and he had “made an image of
gold, ninety feet high and nine feet wide, and set it up in the province of Babylon.” (vs. 1)This
image was of him and he wanted everyone in the province to worship it. He made a law that
stated : “This is what you are commanded to do, O peoples, nations and men of every language.
As soon as you hear the sound of the musical instrument you must fall down and worship the
image of gold that Kind Nebuchadnezzar has set up. Whoever does not fall down and worship
will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace.” (vs. 6)
People had come and turned in Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego for not bowing down to this
image of gold. The King was furious and called them to him and asked them about this.
Read to the Group the rest of the story : Daniel 3: 13 – 18




Who are Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego showing loyalty to?
How do you think they were filling at this time?
Would you be able to do this?
Do you do this now? Do you stand up against things that are wrong, such as
bullying, lying, etc.
Read how the story ends: Daniel 3 : 19 – 27



How did God provide and protect them?
Do you believe the Lord will provide and protect you if you stand up against
wrongs?
What should you do when you see someone being bullied or being made fun
of? How can you change this situation?

Application
Now you get the opportunity to show loyalty in your life! The Lord is with you and will provide
and protect you. Be bold and show your loyalty to your friends, family, and others in your life!
Practical applications to show loyalty in your life:
1.
Make People a Priority – show others you care by making time for them, writing an
email, making a phone call, studying for eating together, or giving an encouraging word.
Do not become too busy with school or hobbies to maintain good relationships.
2. Expect Hard Times – Like our Biblical example every person goes through difficult times.
Avoid using difficulties as an excuse to go back on your word. Remember your
responsibilities and prepare a way to keep your commitments.
3. Support One Another – There is power in numbers and you need one another so help
others work through challenges. When you go through difficult times, seek those who
can give you good advice. Remember what you learn so that you can ehlp others during
their time of need.
4. Keep Commitments – Do not let others’ behavior dictate your actions. When individuals
or circumstances disappoint you, stay true to your commitments and people, even
though it is hard. Then others will know you as a person of your word!
5. Stay Connected – Relationships depend on your commitment to resolve conflicts. It
might seem easier to leave a situation or avoid someone at school, but a loyal person
tries to resolve problems, even if others show no concern.
Remember You are the Light of the World, Let your Light Shine
through your Loyalty!
