Inaugurated in June 1996, the tour leads the visitor on a discovery of beehives and the instruments created by man to protect and improve the bees' existence (extractors, queen excluders, smokers, feeders, bee escapes, etc.), all this with the help of pictures and prints. One of the objectives of the museum is to promote and spread the culture of bee-keeping not only for the nutritional value of bees' produce but also for their importance in flower pollination. Dating back to a period between 1800 and 1900, it is situated in Via Frassenè in Piavon di Oderzo. Following an excellent renovation started in 2001 by the technical staff of the Municipality of Oderzo and of the last "casonieri" (builders specializing in the construction of the typical A fascinating historical re-enactment of the Roman Age in the old town of Opitergium takes place in Oderzo every year in the first week of June. Scenes of everyday life, shows and guided tours bring a glorious past to the stage. Oderzo signed a peaceful alliance with the Roman Republic and developed further until it became a Municipium (i.e. a capital city) with ca. 50,000 inhabitants in the year 49 b.C.. Thanks to its strategic position, well served by the two rivers Monticano and a now dissolved branch of the Piave, the town reached its maximum splendour between the 1st and 2nd century AD. This event is gaining more and more media exposure throughout Italy. (Information: [email protected] www.comune.oderzo.tv.it; Oderzo tourist bureau tel. +39.0422.814081). DI STEFANO Above, Verdi's Traviata in ‘Piazza Grande’ (scenes, costumes and direction by Hugo De Ana) Opitergium Historical Re-enactment, a detail of the Theatrum www.provincia.treviso.it Città di Oderzo Oderzo has existed as a town for many centuries, as witnessed by its skilfully renovated Medieval and Renaissance style buildings. This archaeological centre opens its artistic and architectural heritage to the visitor through the numerous itineraries offered by its urban texture. An important Municipium in Ancient Roman times, it was destroyed in 667 by the Barbarian fury of the Lombard king Grimoaldo and became part of the Venetian Republic in 1338. Oderzo underwent alternate periods of splendour and distress until recent times, when its Archaeological Town Museum helped it develop into a renowned and lively cultural centre. The Museum, named after the scholar Eno Bellis, ranks among the oldest in Italy and houses a valuable Gallery located on the top floor of HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS AND 'PIAZZA GRANDE' the historical 'Palazzo Foscolo' and dedicated to Alberto Martini, the famous pioneer of European Surrealism. 'Piazza Grande', which faces the Renaissance Cathedral, is one of the most famous squares in Veneto. It features a marvellous view of the mountains in the distance and a rare sun-dial which was donated to the town by Architect Toni Follina. He also designed its present location in 1993. The square can be reached through the arcade of the clock Opened in 1876, Oderzo's Archaeological Museum is situated in the porticoes of 'Palazzo Foscolo'. The most outstanding archaeological heritage of the town is displayed here. The urban structure of the ancient town of 'Opitergium', an important economic and administrative centre during the ancient Veneto and Roman ages, originates from the 10th century b.C. and remained as it was until the 7th century AD. Museum collections started in the late 19th century when early findings were supplemented with donations from local families. More recently, other artefacts were added : some of them, owned by the Government, come from the “Moizzi” estate, which is said to have been a refuge for Oderzo inhabitants during the Late Antiquity, others were the result of local excavations spanning the last ALBERTO MARTINI GALLERY There are several evocative open-air archaeological sites scattered around the town centre that you can visit by appointment with professional guides working for the Archaeological Authorities of Veneto. Four sites are particularly worth mentioning: the Forum area contains the remains of a Forum of the Earlier Roman Imperial Age and of a big domus (house); the area of the former jails, situated inside a renowned restaurant not far from the 'Torresin' clock tower; the area of Via dei Mosaici, where the lower part of two wells and the mosaic paving of a noble dwelling are preserved; and the area between Piazza Grande and Piazza Castello, where a tunnel has been built inside a modern building between the squares to show visitors the remains of one of the two main Roman town roads and a paved floor displayed vertically. ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREAS Above, aerial view of Piazza Grande Below, Eno Bellis Archaeological Museum: façade and Late Antiquity Mosaic Hall twenty years. Objects are displayed by order of age - the first floor houses artefacts of the Pre-Roman Age from the town and its surrounding area. Special features of this section are two decorative animal-shaped terracotta statues, some small bronze figurines of charging warriors, and Venetic inscriptions. The first floor also houses the full scale reconstruction of drainage systems using amphorae dating back to the Roman Age and the main amphora specimen found locally. The Roman Age itinerary continues on the ground floor with artefacts of the Romans' everyday life, tombstones (many of which decorated with memorial busts), a collection of coins and small bronze statues, some valuable portraits and famous mosaics of the Late Antiquity (“War Scenes”, “Romanus” and "Cupbearer”). (Information: tel. +39.0422.713333 www.oderzocultura.it) ENO BELLIS ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM 'Palazzo Foscolo' is a late 16thcentury dwelling with the typical features of a Venetian villa - a three-section façade, large arched windows on the first floor, a spacious hall on the ground floor. The halls of the two upper floors are accessed by a staircase with valuable stuccoes, probably decorated by Alessandro Vittoria (Trento 1524-Vicenza 1608). While the ground floor houses the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery, the second floor features a Gallery named after Alberto Martini, native of Oderzo (Oderzo 1876-Milan 1954). This gallery, inaugurated in 1967 thanks to a generous legacy features a rich collection marking the momentous steps of Martini's career. Starting from 1897, the artist took part in no less than 14 consecutive editions of the Biennale in Venice. A Symbolist since his first literature- tower called 'Torresin', the town's symbol, which stands at the Southern Gate of the former Medieval ramparts. Hospitable and quiet, Oderzo offers a wide range of opportunities to discover the charm, flavours and scents of the “joyful and lovely” [”gioiosa et amorosa”] Province of Treviso. inspired creations, Martini turned to Surrealism in his later Parisian period. One of his most prestigious works is the illustration of the Divine Comedy, which took him over 40 years of impassioned work - from the 1901 edition promoted by Alinari of Florence to the watercolour tables painted between 1943 and 1944. The corpus consists of 298 works, most of which were painted in black and white. He also produced the elegant, unmatched illustrations for Edgar Allan Poe's Tales, the ‘Mysteries’ graphics and the ‘Danza Macabra Europea’ lithographs (1914-1916), a harsh, sarcastic critique of the First World War. Martini's interest in theatre led him to create Tetiteatro, a theatre staging on water, on which he spent one full year of research and designs, many of which are displayed in a unique collection in Oderzo. The first floor of ‘Palazzo Foscolo’ hosts temporary art exhibitions, the 'Oderzo Azienda & Design Award', the 'Città di Oderzo Architecture Award', meetings, cultural events, and concerts. Local documents from past and modern times are carefully collected forming a precious heritage of the history and cultural, social and economic life of Oderzo's territory. The Library contains two archives - the Historical and the Eno Bellis Records. A walk through these lands where enormous, compact wheat fields alternate with vineyards which are as high and joyful as triumphal arches raises the spirit towards happier thoughts. The promised land is tangible here. Here, you might think of the decorations on Achilles' shield, and it is not hard to understand how untouched agriculture can be so generous to provide us our daily sustenance. Here, people still labour the land.» (Giovanni Comisso, 'Veneto felice', 1984) HOLIDAY OFFER Discover the fascination of music and the mystery of an ancient Roman town!
