THE IUCN RED LIST OF THREATENED SPECIES™ Taxonomy Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Plantae Tracheophyta Magnoliopsida Caryophyllales Cactaceae Taxon Name: Mammillaria manana W.A.Fitz Maur. & B.Fitz Maur. Taxonomic Notes: This recently described species (Fitz Maurice and Fitz Maurice 2006) has been treated as a synonym of M. fittkaui subsp. limonensis by Hunt et al. (2006) without any explanation. Examination of the plants and the descriptions of the taxa concerned indicates that they should be treated as separate taxa, hence M. manana is upheld here. Assessment Information Red List Category & Criteria: Critically Endangered B1ab(v)+2ab(v) ver 3.1 Year Published: 2013 Date Assessed: November 19, 2009 Justification: This species is listed as Critically Endangered because it has an area of occupy of less than 1 km2, it is known from only one location, and is experiencing a decline in population due to collection. It is very likely that this species has experienced severe declines recently, because the only known locality is now publicly known. Geographic Range Range Description: This species is found in one location southwest of Laguna de Chapala in Jalisco, Mexico. It is found in two adjacent sites totalling 10,000 m2. Country Occurrence: Native: Mexico (Jalisco) © The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Mammillaria manana – published in 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.UK.2013-1.RLTS.T171788A1331582.en 1 Population The population is estimated to be 800 individuals. The population is declining as a result of a small amount of collection by scientists for the purpose of developing a population for commercial cultivation. Current Population Trend: Decreasing Habitat and Ecology (see Appendix for additional information) This species is found on steep rock walls and steep rocky slopes within humid, low scrub. Systems: Terrestrial Use and Trade (see Appendix for additional information) There are some individuals being cultivated for commercial sale. The species is sought after by illegal collectors. Threats (see Appendix for additional information) Until recently, the only known location of Mammillaria manana was unknown, but it has now become rather widely known (W.A. Fitz Maurice pers. comm, 2012). This is very likely to have affected the population drastically, however, it has not been visited again recently by the assessors to evaluate the current status (W.A. Fitz Maurice pers. comm, 2012). The area is quite inaccessible, which offers the species some protection. Conservation Actions (see Appendix for additional information) This species should be included in the national and international species protection regulations including the Mexican List of Threatened Species (NOM-059) and CITES. It does not occur in any protected areas. Credits Assessor(s): Fitz Maurice, B & Fitz Maurice, W.A.
