Jump into Even More Science Fun continues with seasonal change as we head into spring this time. Along
with lengthening days and warming temperatures, children will explore snow, maple sugaring, evergreens,
rain, early spring wildflowers and other topics with Naturalist Mary Ann Schlegel. Actual activities vary
from class to class but will include crafts, books, games, and as much outdoor time as possible. Dress for
crafts indoors and for the weather outdoors. Younger children with parents are welcome to attend if

The Mammal Class includes a fascinating diversity of common and less familiar animals. With Naturalist Mary
Ann Schlegel, children will delve into an exploration of mammals focusing on local species but including
whales and our primate relatives. Activities may include outdoor habitat exploration, games, and dissection as

Join Naturalist Christina Schwindinger for an interactive workshop series geared toward beginning artists who
have an interest in improving their artistic abilities. Sketchbooks are available for a fee, but orders must be
placed at least 1 week in advance. If time and weather permit the workshop will conclude with a short nature
walk and participants will be encouraged to stop and sketch along the way; dress appropriately.
A Study of Spring Blossoms (March 12) - Artists will study the contours and shapes found within early spring
blossoms and learn some tricks in making their drawings both realistic and pleasing to the eye.
Capturing Colors on the Wing (April 16) - Artists will study the form and figure of birds from both photo
references and posed specimens and learn how to distinguish different species of backyard birds from their
coloration, shape and size.
Bringing Skulls to Life (May 14) - Artists will study the use of shading and shadows to create the illusion of
three dimensions in their drawings using the park's collection of animal skulls, bones, antlers, and turtle shells
as drawing references.

Family Fun: Speedwell in the Spring

Speedwell Forge has wonderful Hammer Creek lowlands as well as wooded uplands to explore, perfect for
children and adults alike. Naturalist Mary Ann Schlegel will lead a walk from floodplain to upland habitats
looking and listening for signs of spring. Dress for a walk of 1-2 miles on trails that could be wet. Call (717)

Beginner Knitting Workshop

Learn to knit, or brush-up on the basic stitches. Members of the Red Rows Knitting Guild will teach participants
the cast-on, garter and bind-off stitches. Students will work towards completing a mug rug. This hands-on
program will feature a sufficient number of instructors so all participants receive personalized attention.

Spring GPS Bingo at Speedwell Forge

Use a handheld GPS unit to follow coordinates and clues to geocaches. Naturalist Mary Ann Schlegel will
provide instruction before participants begin. Participants will receive a bingo template and a list stamps to
arrange on the cards before searching for geocaches. First party back with bingo stamped on their card wins!
Dress for outdoor activity and wear shoes appropriate for covering 1 to 3 miles on varied terrain. When
registering, please indicate number of GPS units required; plan to leave keys or driver’s license if borrowing a

Get Outdoors PA wants everyone to connect with outdoor activities year-round. As part of their "GO Days"
initiative, join Naturalist Francine Praught to celebrate spring’s rebirth at Speedwell Forge County Park.
Participants will hike the wetland meadow, field edge and forest of this beautiful park while learning about the
history and wildlife of the area. There is a great chance that frogs, toads and owls may be calling. Please dress

Celebrate Earth Day and give back by reducing an invasive plant along the Wildflower Trail in Central Park.
Garlic mustard, native in Europe, flowers in early spring and is a prolific seed-producer. An Earth Day pulling
allows removal of plants before new seeds have a chance to mature and spread. Naturalist Mary Ann Schlegel
will provide background information on garlic mustard before leading participants outdoors to identify and

DIY: Spring Stepping Stones

Money Rocks in May

Money Rocks County Park
Money Rocks in the month of May is a special place. Quartzite rocks provide dramatic topography and also
weather to produce more acidic soils than most other areas of the County. As a result, Money Rocks is host to
trees, wildflowers, and club mosses not commonly seen on more limey soils. Join Naturalist Mary Ann Schlegel
for a hike to explore and appreciate some treasures of Money Rocks. Trails are rough so wear shoes appropriate
for a rocky trail walk of 2-3 miles. Meet in the main parking lot on Narvon Road. Call (717) 295-2055 to

Astronomy Program for 2016
The Lancaster County Department of Parks & Recreation will again be hosting nighttime star watches
conducted by the Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County (AELC). As with last year the location will
alternate between the Lancaster County Parks’ Environmental Center and the Manheim Township Department
of Recreation & Park Planning’s Stoner Park. All the star watches will provide a science-oriented
understanding of the different types of objects to be found in the universe. These include the moon, planets,
stars and star clusters, galaxies, constellations, comets and different types of nebulae. These objects will be
viewed through telescopes set up by club members as well as by your naked eyes, so bring your interest and
questions and enjoy yourself under the night sky. The second date listed for each month is the rain date,
