Chill Zone Activity Overview January 2017

CHILLZONE – 2017 TOPIC OVERVIEW
Welcome back and Happy New Year to you all.
With the New Year passing we are already looking forward over the coming months
leading up to Summer. We have lots of exciting ideas for both Chill Zone and the wider
school community to get involved with – look out for special posters!
Please remember we are more than happy to help the children with any homework throughout the week, and encourage
them to take advantage of doing so to free up their weekends. We are also always open to any activity or snack
suggestions throughout the year. If you have any concerns or comments (negative or positive!), or would like to discuss your
child attending Chill Zone, please talk to Nicola Hamilton or email the school: [email protected].
THE ARCTIC WORLD
KEY SKILLS
Throughout January we will be following an Arctic World theme. The Arctic region is unique
amongst the Earth’s ecosystems and will allow us to undertake many activities and games to
discover how people and animals survive there, as well as the effects of global warming on sea
ice levels. We will build igloos, recreate ice fishing, go on animal treasure hunts, play games like
pass the ice and winter warmer dash. We will also try to incorporate some of the typical diet into
snack time (perhaps even stretching the theme to include arctic ice cream roll!).
Friday DVD nights will continue, with as many Ice themed movies that we can think of!

SPACE EXPLORATION
KEY SKILLS
We will be looking at what is currently understood of our solar system, as well as the rapidly
progressing technology around Space exploration, from astronomers with their telescopes to
physical exploration by unmanned robotic probes and human spaceflight. Space tourism is
currently in early stages, with a short flight expected to cost upwards of £200,000, but this is likely
to quickly develop over the coming years – perhaps when the children are adults they will be
holidaying in space stations!

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!
KEY SKILLS
As many of you will know, May 4th is considered world Star Wars day. Following on from our
Space topic, we will be celebrating all things Star Wars with a themed party. Get your
Lightsaber at the ready! The party will be open to all pupils at the normal Chill Zone rate of £5
and will be advertised nearer the time.

SUMMER FUN
KEY SKILLS
For the summer term, we will be looking at all things hot! From our own sun safety to how plants
and animals have evolved to live in excessively hot and dry conditions,
We will be looking at the best ways to cool down – ice cream will be a scientific necessity.
The end of term party will be Beach themed. I suspect there may be requests for a repeat of last
year’s water fight, and have lots of ideas on how to make it even more fun!

THINGS YOU MAY WISH TO BRING FROM HOME
The children are welcome to bring in an appropriate DVD/CD of their choice –
certificate U or PG. We all love burning off some energy with dancing games.
Any day
The British weather is as variable as always so children who attend regularly may wish
to bring a pair of wellies and old trousers for outdoor play (labelled please!).
Leave in Chill zone or bring
daily
Please do not bring toys from home that will not be shared with the other children. We
love hearing about the children’s hobbies and adventures. They are welcome to
bring items, stories or music to share with the group.
