A Place of Victory
After witnessing the marvelous miracle of Jesus
raising Lazarus from the dead, today’s Gospel passage ended by noting that many who had seen this
mighty deed began to believe in Jesus. In other
words, the people who witnessed this awesome miracle saw that this man, Jesus Christ, is also really God.
Our Catholic faith teaches us that Jesus Christ is both
true God and true man. And today’s Gospel allows us
to peer deeply into this great mystery.
His humanity shines forth most clearly in his interactions with Martha and Mary. This is not the first
time Jesus meets them in the Scriptures. We have met
them before. These two women, along with their
brother Lazarus, are Jesus’ good friends. He visits
them. He goes to their
home. He dines with
them. He enjoys their
company. And he weeps
sorrowfully when he
learned that one of them
has passed away. How
beautiful! We have a
God who takes the initiative to be in a personal
relationship with us. He
rejoices with us in the
happy moments, and he
cries with us and consoles us in the difficult ones.
Yet, we also see today that Jesus Christ is also true
God. He alone has the power to raise the dead. He
alone has the power to restore us to life. He alone can
raise the soul from the darkness of spiritual death and
raise it to the light of eternal life.
The awesome news
is that we don’t just
have to read that Jesus
is true God and true
man; we can experience
it firsthand too, above
all in the Sacrament of Fr. Brandon
Reconciliation. Here we have the opportunity to experience personally the overwhelming and transforming power of God’s love for us: we experience Jesus
consoling us when we are sorrowful for our sins and
then he melts our hardened hearts with the abundance
of his mercy and forgiveness.
Jesus, who offers this mercy and forgiveness, is
waiting for you. Have
you experienced his
mercy yet this Lent? In
addition to our usual
3:30 Saturday afternoon
opportunity for Confession, we will have our
parish Lenten Communal Penance on Monday, April 14th at 7:30
p.m. Twenty priests,
including our own Bishop Barber, will be available to hear your confessions and dispense God’s
mercy. Please join us!
The confessional is not supposed to be a scary
place. It’s not a place of judgment and doom, but a
place of mercy and rebirth.
In the end, it’s a place of victory!
ÂWhen one’s life is centered on Christ, all the energies, aspirations, and powers of
the soul fall into a beautiful and satisfying pattern.”

Chapter 6
What is the Authentic Life
Fostering the Inner Life:
The authentic life is compatible with
any honest activity.
Our Essential Purpose:
Holiness is the goal of the Christian
life. People thrive & are ultimately
happier when they have a higher
standard to strive for.
God wants to be invited into our hearts
and lives, but much more than consent, He desires our loving cooperation.
What is Holiness:
Living a Holy life means letting our
decisions be guided by the Holy Spirit. Holiness is surrendering to the will
of God & being set apart for God.
The-Best-Version-of-Yourself:
The authentic life, responding to God’s
call to live a holy life, and our essential purpose are one and the same.
Your holiness is the desire of God,
the delight of God, and the source of
your happiness.
To embrace who you were created to be
and to become the-best-version-ofyourself is God’s dream for you.
Vatican II:
The Vatican documents are calling us
to holiness. Begin with the church in
the modern world. Read one paragraph at a time and pick out a phrase,
an idea, or a single word that “jumps
out at you”.
The Great Depression:
Cry out to God saying, “Show us how to
find the happiness our hearts are hungry for”; God replies, “Walk with me,
be all I created you to be, become thebest-version-of-yourself”.
4
Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD;
LORD, hear my voice!

The Triduum
or “Three-in-One Day”
Our Most Holy Time of Year
From sundown Holy Thursday to sundown Easter
Sunday-- following the ancient Jewish way of defining the start and end of a day-- nothing at church is
"business as usual". The liturgies of Holy Thursday,
Good Friday, and Holy Saturday are one connected
whole, just as Christ's Last Supper, Passion and Resurrection are one connected whole: the one saving Paschal mystery that opens the door of eternal life to us
all.
The only Mass that parish churches hold on Holy
Thursday is the evening Mass of the Lord's Supper,
when we remember both how Jesus washed his
apostles' feet, and how he first gave the Eucharist to
them and to all of us. That liturgy has no final blessing, just taking the Blessed Sacrament out of church to
the altar of repose [in our case, that altar will be in the
parish center]. The sacramental Body of Christ is kept
for Holy Communion the next day; we are welcome to
adore and wait there with Jesus.
On Good Friday the liturgy has no greeting, for it is
a continuation. It has the reading of Christ's Passion;

Holy Communion is only available from hosts consecrated the night before. The liturgy has no ending, just
as death was not the end for Christ: it is "to be continued".
On Holy Saturday the only Mass is the Easter Vigil, which must not begin until nightfall. It begins with
a fire outside, lighting the Paschal candle. Just as
Christ rose from the dead during that night, adults who
will be new Christians gain rebirth through baptism at
this rich and joyful Mass. At last we again sing "Glory
to God in the highest", and conclude at last with a
blessing and being sent forth.
During these days, the whole Church focuses on
these central events of our salvation, by celebrating
only this three-in-one liturgy, no other Eucharistic liturgies [aka "Masses"]. For those who wish to gather
for prayer to start the day on Thursday, Friday and
Saturday mornings (always a good habit!) we hold
Morning Prayer at 8:00. To whatever extent you are
able to participate, may these holy liturgies renew and
strengthen you and all of us in our lives of faith.

WHY IS IT
A man wakes up after sleeping
under an ADVERTISED blanket
on an ADVERTISED mattress
and pulls off ADVERTISED pajamas
bathes in an ADVERTISED shower
shaves with an ADVERTISED razor
brushes his teeth
with ADVERTISED toothpaste
washes with ADVERTISED soap
puts on ADVERTISED clothes
drinks a cup

and then . . . .
refuses to ADVERTISE
believing it doesn’t pay.
Later if business is poor

WHY IS IT?
ADVERTISING
He who has a thing to sell and
goes and whispers in a well, is
not so apt to get the dollars as
he who climbs a tree and hollers.
