Letter from the President and Chairman
In 2012, we embark on advances in health care that not only benefits patients but the
overall well-being of our community. For over 20 years, The Memorial Foundation has
been a catalyst, bringing dynamic community members together to create tangible
solutions to solve the health needs of our community.

This year, we strive for measurable advances in cancer care. Working under the dynamic
leadership of the team at North Star Lodge, we will devote ourselves to creating an
environment for remarkable outcomes for patients. North Star Lodge will shape new
futures by making ambitious, long-term investments in state-of-the-moment technology
and deliberately fine-tuning the coordination of care strategies for patients.
We will be champions on behalf of individuals living with cancer, pushing to enhance
their quality of life and be responsive to their evolving physical and emotional needs. And
we’ll escalate prevention efforts through early detection at ‘Ohana.

Children’s Village will prove its mettle as a nimble assemblage of agencies banded
together in their determination to dramatically improve the lives of children and families
with potentially devastating diagnosis. Programs for children and families will continue
to have our nurture: pediatrics and the NICU must have the resources to provide the
ultimate safety net for little ones.
Cottage in the Meadow will come into bloom, as a product of a generous community,
and will bring a compassionate level of care to those at the end of life. The opportunity
to make life enhancing decisions in the face of end-stage illness will bring comfort to the
living and the dying. We will partner with our community to achieve a broad range of
supportive services at end of life.

Memorial Hospital and its Family of Services will excel in adapting to what can feel
impossible: caring for all who need care, and at the same time advancing patient
satisfaction and involving patients and families in decisions. We will continue to develop
new models of care, and bring vitality to our community.
We believe that 2012 will mark a sea of change in personal responsibility. We really
will get healthier! We see more flocking to our health education classes and chronic
disease management programs. By taking control of our own wellness we can avoid the
downward spiral of our health and the extravagant costs associated with it.
At The Memorial Foundation, we’ll be working on the quest to ever enable those who
work to give comfort and care. None of this would be possible if it weren’t for the
generosity and dedication of so many community members, partner organizations and
passionate, innovative people coming together and raising funds. Thank you for making

Community Impact
Children’s Village recently received a $204,000 grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust. This grant
will fund autism, behavioral and mental health therapies at Children’s Village and will allow further
exploration of medical and educational models throughout the community.
It is with great enthusiasm and gratitude that we welcome the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust as a
recurring Memorial Foundation and Children’s Village partner. This is the fourth grant since Children’s
Village began in 1997 that the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust has provided funding for vital programs
and expansion at the Village. Just two years ago in 2009, it granted $230,000 to the Children’s Village
Capital Campaign.
We are always eager to share the innovative array of services that Children’s Village provides for children
with special needs, and the fact that it truly is a one-of-a-kind, nationally recognized organization.
It is thrilling when institutions outside of our community recognize the importance and benefit of
participating in our collaborative efforts!
Children’s Village Capital Campaign Update:
The expansion campaign for Children’s Village is in the home stretch. With the building complete
and $500,000 left to raise, the focus shifts to program expansion and support. Critical areas of
need include therapy services and autism and mental health education and support. With the
growing awareness and need for early intervention (services for children age birth to 3-years-old),
the expansion of diagnostic screening services increase the need for funding.
FEATURED IN NATIONAL PUBLICATION
In March of 2012, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney published an article featuring
Children’s Village in its national philanthropic publication Perspectives in
Philanthropy. This publication highlights innovative organizations and nonprofits
from around the United States that are working on the front lines to make their
local communities, the nation, and the world a better place to live. Children’s Village
appears in the edition Scaling and Innovation in Medical Philanthropy. The article
Building a Village for Our Most Vulnerable Children is one of 13 articles featured in
this publication, and it gives Children’s Village national exposure to Morgan Stanley
Smith Barney’s wealthiest clients who seek opportunities to make charitable gifts.

service providers, philanthropists and partner organizations who have made Children’s
Village possible in the Yakima community.

Health Programs Funded by The Memorial Foundation
Children’s Programs:
Mother and Baby Programs:
Every year, thousands of children with special needs
receive specialized health services at Children’s Village.
The Memorial Foundation raises funds to sustain social,
emotional, and behavioral support, medical specialty
clinics and other core services. The Foundation also
supports the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a 16-bed unit with state-of-the-art technology, providing
resources for equipment, specialized training for staff
and emergency services for families with an infant in
the NICU.
Memorial is the hospital Yakima’s families trust to
bring new life into the world. In the last decade the
hospital has delivered more than 30,000 babies.
Offering genetic counseling and specialized genetic
testing, this dedicated team is committed to providing
preventative health and educational services to families.
The Memorial Foundation funds Central Washington’s
prenatal program and clinics and Resolution Through
Sharing, a program providing services to families
experiencing pregnancy loss.
Home Health and Hospice:
YouthWorks:
Hospice provides comprehensive end-of-life care
for terminally-ill patients and their families. Hospice
teams bring quality of life during the final weeks and
days of a person’s life that extends beyond necessary
medical care.
YouthWorks is a youth empowerment and community
service initiative for high school students. Opportunities
for civic and service-minded youth include
volunteering, mentoring, and philanthropic events
designed to engage teens in the community, fostering
leadership skills and character.
Women’s Programs:
Memorial’s ‘Ohana Mammography Center is dedicated
to complete breast health for every woman. With early
detection as the best defense against breast cancer,
‘Ohana serves patients with a comprehensive and
coordinated approach to breast health. Donors support
‘Ohana by funding a membership to the National
Consortium of Breast Centers, which provides breast
health education and technology education for staff.
North Star Lodge Cancer Care Services:
Blending skilled oncology staff, the best available
technology, and patient-centered care in beautiful
surroundings at North Star Lodge, patients receive the
most sophisticated cancer care in an optimum healing
environment. The Memorial Foundation supports a broad
range of patient and program needs. As therapy changes
rapidly in this area, training becomes a high priority for
North Star and its nursing staff. The Foundation also
funds a patient emergency assistance fund.
Community Health and Education:
Health care education is a vital resource to the
community and The Memorial Foundation utilizes
generous donations to maximize impact. Through
innovative technology, subscription to specialized
collaborations, support groups for families, and free or
nearly free health education training for the community,
donors ensure that Memorial staff and the community
receive the very best in health care education.

Under the direction of Dr. Sean Cleary, Medical Director
of Radiation Oncology, new cutting edge technology and
equipment is in the works for North Star Lodge in the coming
year. Plans are under way to add two linear accelerators and
a coordinated electronic medical record system to integrate
patients’ current cancer care and their lifelong follow-up
survivorship care. These advances add noteworthy features:
• North Star is one of a few non-university
settings in the nation doing Phase I
clinical trials with new, untried drugs
for cancer patients who have no other
options. Dr. Tom Boyd is nationally
recognized for clinical trials.
North Star Lodge
Cancer treatment can be a frightening and always challenging journey for patients and their
families. For patients in the Yakima Valley, North Star Lodge Cancer Center is a premier facility in
the Pacific Northwest offering innovative and comprehensive cancer treatments.
North Star Lodge provides patients with the same treatments available at major cancer centers
throughout the country, eliminating the need to travel. In fact, patients who travel from Yakima to
Seattle to seek treatment are usually sent right back to North Star, and patients from Seattle often
come to North Star due to the availability and convenience of so many state-of-the-art cancer
services located under one roof.
It is the only site in the Pacific Northwest that offers chemotherapy and radiation in the same
location, and is one of only eight cancer centers in the United States to receive the Clinical Trials
Participation Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
North Star Lodge is deeply committed to a holistic approach to improve health with quality care,
compassion and integrity. Serving approximately 800 new patients each year in medical and
radiation oncology, all cancer care is provided in a beautiful, soothing environment specifically
designed for healing. High-quality care is a unique blend of the latest technology and expertise in
chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery, as well as complementary therapies such as healing
yoga, meditation, touch therapy and nutrition.

• The breast cancer conference and tumor
boards at North Star bring together
multiple specialists to discuss and make
recommended treatments for each
cancer case. This is the equivalent of
getting a second or third opinion for
each patient, which enhances critical
thinking and problem solving among
physicians involved in the treatment
plan. Nearly every breast cancer patient
(98 percent) in Yakima goes through
the conference process which results in
fewer mastectomies.
• North Star will be one of the only
locations in the western United States
to use an electronic medical record for
coordination of medical and radiation
oncology at one site (Arizona is the
closest location), and the first disease
site with hospital-wide integration of
care for cancer patients among primary,
specialty, and ancillary care providers.
• Survivorship Software Management
will allow for lifetime follow-up care for
cancer patients.
• Advances in physics, software and
technology allow for precision radiation
therapy to maximize radiation doses,
minimize side effects, reduce radiation
overexposure to healthy tissue, and
reduce total treatment time. Treatments
that used to take 20-30 minutes now
take 2 minutes. Breast cancer treatment
that used to take 7 weeks can now be
done in 5 days.
• Performance ratings for North Star are
higher than the rest of Washington State.

Along with The Memorial Foundation, local hospice groups
and dedicated community members have joined the cause
to raise funds for Cottage. Located near 48th and Nob Hill,
the 20-bed facility will be equipped with private suites, family
accommodations and 24-hour on-site trained hospice staff.
Cindy Fiscus, who lost her husband Brad six years ago after a
long battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is personally invested in
seeing the Cottage completed.
“Hospice was a vital resource for our family and the
Cottage would have been an ideal solution at the end
of my husband’s life", said Cindy. "I want to make sure
that those families who need a hospice house in our
community, have that resource.”

Currently, the roof is finished on the building and interior
work is well under way.
Cottage in the Meadow, the first hospice home
in Yakima County, is under construction with an
anticipated opening of summer 2012. With no
other facility of its kind in the Yakima Valley, The
Memorial Foundation and steering committee have raised
nearly $5 million of the $5.3 million needed to complete
Phase I of the project.

Eugene Shields, local business owner and Yakima native,
was founding chairman of The Memorial Foundation in 1989. He also
served on Memorial Hospital’s Board of Trustees from 1977 to 1989.
Passionate about children, Gene sponsored the Shields Golf Classic
for the children’s fund each year. He was a tireless advocate in the
initial capital campaign to build Children’s Village.
Letty Ann Ginn, Emeritus 2009, raised in Yakima, and
was a steadfast advocate for the community. She was a tireless
leader, active in advisory boards and community groups, a founder
of The Memorial Foundation board in 1989, and was a board
chairperson. Letty Ann’s husband, Shuler Ginn, was a chief of staff

Lifelong Yakima resident and past board chairman,
Robert R. Lynch was a war hero, community leader
and automobile dealer for 40 years and a retired orchardist.
Bob served on The Memorial Foundation board from its founding
until his passing and Memorial Hospital’s board of trustees from
1973 to 1987. Bob was a passionate advocate for Children’s Village
and The Memorial Foundation.

Founded in 1989 by Eugene Shields, the initial Memorial
Foundation Board was as fine a group of people as ever was. Many
of them pictured here, worked together for two decades and
enjoyed every minute of their time together.

Hospital. A member of the Florence Marley Hospital Guild,
Pat has faithfully reported to work as a Gift Shop volunteer
for 15 years. Pat has a kind word for every visitor and staff
member who comes in the shop, and gleefully models and
demonstrates the merchandise. Many people drop in just to
visit with her when they know she's scheduled to work. Pat
has involved her whole family in every aspect of Memorial
life, with generous funding for programs and projects and
supporting every event with their presence and endorsement.

have met her in the Gift Shop, as she cheerfully greets
each visitor and gently doles out her encouragement, style
tips, and humor to all who need a friend. Rosemary has

Yakima natives,
Bob and Sharon Brown have
committed their lives to make Yakima a better place to live and
raise a family. Sharon was a nurse at Memorial Hospital and very
committed to the concept of hospice. She was thrilled a new hospice
home was going to be built. When Sharon died unexpectedly, Bob
and the rest of the family joined together in support of hospice to
carry out her wishes. Hundreds of Memorial employees donated
to Cottage in the Meadow in honor of Sharon. Bob and his
adult children were so moved that they presented The Memorial
Foundation with a personal donation to accompany those given by
Sharon’s friends and colleagues. We are happy to commemorate
Sharon’s lifelong contributions by naming the Library and Reading
area in the new Cottage in the Meadow in her honor.

Corrine Neubert and Arlene Cuillier have lived in the Yakima
Sisters
Valley all their lives. After their beloved mother and,
later, both of their husbands received hospice care
before passing away, the sisters were grateful for the
wonderful care and support hospice provided their
family. When the Cottage in the Meadow plans were
developed, Corrine was one of the early supporters
to step forward by underwriting a patient suite in her
husband's memory. Arlene underwrote one of the
beautiful family sitting alcoves in the Cottage in honor
of her husband. We gratefully acknowledge and thank
these lovely women for remembering their loved ones
in such meaningful and practical ways.
