Prez Sez
Happy New Year from Buenos Aires, Argentina! I hope your
year was as adventuresome and fun as mine and that you are
ringing in the New Year with good friends and family.
The “Dresden Plate” and “Sun Bonnet
Sue” quilts, which were donated by our
very generous “anonymous member”,
were raffled off at the December Social.
The tickets were sold for $1 each and
$142 was raised for our charity
Scoutreach. For $135 Scoutreach
provides the scouting advantage to atrisk Portland area girls and boys at
Scouter’s Mountain, Happy Valley,
Oregon. Michael Grossnickle, a very
active member and volunteer since
2000, won the “Dresden Plate” quilt.
Mike is going to give his beautiful quilt
to his mother for Christmas, what a
good son.

How many of us have had
to cancel an event due to
illness, injury or major
emergency? I know I have.
It can be a real hardship if
you cannot find a
replacement,
you may lose all your money. A number of members have had
a major illness or surgery lately and have had to cancel their
plans. I highly recommend getting TRAVEL INSURANCE. You
can buy travel insurance for events, Bergie or otherwise. I am
currently researching travel insurance plans for members of
BSC. Look for additional information in the February Prez Sez.

Current lift tickets are priced at $69, higher during holiday and
blackout dates. BSC Lift vouchers are good all ski season until
spring, open to close, no blackout dates. Good during peak
season. You must turn them in for an actual lift ticket.
Cost $49 for members, $54 for guests
Purchase them at the monthly socials or at the office (call first).
Order them online for $2 more. They will be mailed to you.

And speaking of emergencies, it is very important for all
members to carry their “In Case of Emergency – Contact” card.
Every member when they joined BSC received an emergency
contact card to fill out and carry. This information includes your
name, address, etc. plus who to contact and their information.
Also there is a section for your medical requirements. Of
course, some of us have lost our cards or the contact and
medical information has changed. You may get a new card at
the Membership table at the monthly social or pick one up at
the Bergie office.
Check the calendar for the 21 SNOW SPORTS events offered for
2011. Many of the 9 overnight events have room remaining for
members and guests. Ski in Canada, at Mt. Bachelor, in the
mid-Cascades, Eastern Oregon, Lake Tahoe and all around Mt.
Hood and even relax at Belknap Hot Springs. We are a lucky
bunch to be able to enjoy a variety of locations and terrain on
the snow. And do not forget about the CROSS COUNTRY and
SKATE SKI workshops and PACRAT racing to be held January
through March. Our volunteer instructors are the best!
Also continue enjoying the walks, social events, and informal
Bergie gatherings with your Bergie family “Friends of the
Mountain”.

Last minute events and winter office notice!
During the ski months, frequently check the website calendar
for newly added or canceled events. Fresh snow or sever
weather can change the most carefully laid plans.
Also if we have snow in the city, the club office may not be
open as scheduled. The club office parking lot is never cleared
so that becomes the tricky part for Thea coming to work. Office
phone and emails are not answered when the office is closed.
XC Ski Etiquette and Teacup Trail Passes
From your Cross Country Ski (and showshoe) Director:
Snow has been falling on the mountain, trails are groomed, and
it’s time to get out our skis and snowshoes for another season.
Look on the Bergfreunde website to find many wonderful
opportunities for day trips, overnight trips, snowshoeing, and
lessons.
Teacup passes are available through me or the club office for
$5.00. This is a benefit of your membership. The price to ski at
Teacup has gone up to $8.00 this year to cover their costs.
Remember these etiquette tips when out on the trails:
1. Match your abilities with your trip plans. An
inexperienced skier on a difficult trail is a hazard to other
skiers and him/herself.
2. Avoid snowshoeing or walking over a ski track. It ruins
the track for other skiers.
3. Keep to the right when meeting another skier. Yield the
right-of-way to the descending skier.
4. Slow down when approaching or overtaking another
skier. When stopped, do not block the trail. Step aside
and let faster skiers pass so everyone can travel at a
comfortable pace. The call “TRACK!” is used to indicate
that a skier needs to use the track. You must step out of
the way to let them pass.
5. Trail marking signs must be respected. On any trail
marked with an indicated direction, a skier should
proceed only in that direction.
6. If you packed it in, pack it out.

An 8-day visit to Alaska to experience the spectacular winter scenery, including portions of Denali National Park. We will see the
creations of the annual US National Ice Carving Championships and the renowned University of Alaska Museum. Each evening, we
will search for displays of the northern lights. We will spend two days at Chena Hot Springs, where we can soak in the104-degree
water of the natural thermal pools while the air temperature is well below freezing. Optional activities in Fairbanks and Chena
include downhill and cross-country skiing, sled dog rides, snowshoeing, more museums, flightseeing trips, a massage at the hot
springs spa, and other attractions. We will travel from Anchorage to Fairbanks by train. Much of the train route is through the
wilderness, away from roads and towns and passes through Denali National Park. Weather permiting, we will see 20,000-foot
Mount McKinley from the train. Our visit to Chena Hot Springs will include the Aurora snowcoach excursion to a high viewpoint for

The first three nights will be in Old Town Bandon, next two nights at Whaleshead Resort between Brookings and Gold Beach and
the last three nights at Hiouchi next to the Smith River and Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park in California. You can bike
between the towns where we stay if you wish. I have spots for 66 adventuresome people. There are 46 people who have chosen to
be part of the leave early on Friday group which gives us time to bike, hike near Sweet Creek Falls and paddle on the Siuslaw River
before stopping at Winchester Bay Inn for the night. The next day we have plans for biking, hiking and kayaking in the Oregon
Dunes National Recreation Area. While in Bandon, there will be opportunities to visit the gardens at Shore Acres State Park and
paddle at South Slough National Estuarine Reserve, Coquille River and Millicoma River. There will be bike rides near Bandon and
lots of medium length hikes in nearby places like Sunset Cove State Park, Cape Arago State Park and along the Pacific Ocean south
of Bandon. Old Town Bandon and the Bandon jetty are cool places to visit. While we are at Whaleshead Resort, you can opt for a
64 or 80-mile trip on the Rogue River jetboats, bike along a gorgeous stretch of coast line, bike from Brookings to Little Redwoods
State Park on the Chetco, paddle or swim in the Chetco River, or hike stretches of the Coast Trail or in the Siskiyous at Vulcan
Lake. While we are in Hiouchi, there are many beautiful hikes of all lengths in the Redwoods, a paddle trip on the Smith River,
crystal clear deep swimming holes along the Smith River and two bike rides through the Redwoods to the California Coast. The
basic trip price covers 6 breakfasts, 9 lunches, 6 dinners, trailer expenses, 8 nights of lodging in cabins, motel rooms, vacation
rentals and modular homes, a small budget for trip development of all the bike, hike and paddle routes plus the administrative fee.
Teenage and younger children of members may participate if there is room and their cost will reflect their lodging and meal needs.

There are two options available depending on the snow, weather and group decision. The Hardtime Loop, level B for 11 miles,
starts at Old Man Pass in Washington and follows roads that are usually groomed with set tracks over rolling hills. On clear days
there are views of Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Adams across the clear cuts between sections of forest. The Scenic Loop, level B for 5.7
miles, is a shorter but more challenging trail offering forest, meadows and clear cuts with great views of Mt. Adams. Portions of this
trail are also machine groomed. Bring lunch, water and the rest of the essentials. We might stop for refreshment on the way home.

Winter Trails is a SnowSports Industries America (SIA) program giving those new to snowsports an opportunity to try snowshoes
for free! REI will host this traditional day of fun on Mt. Hood at the White River West Sno-Park located four miles east of
Government Camp on Highway 35. The free event will feature demo snowshoes from a variety of vendors including Atlas, MSR and
Tubbs. Adventure Without Limits will be on hand to provide guided hikes. Hot beverages and treats will be available. Participants
should wear weather-appropriate clothing, including waterproof boots. While the event is free, you will need an Oregon Sno-Park

This should be a great snow year and Nordic Skate Skiing is a popular fun activity between downhill and classic. Three skate ski
workshops at Teacup Nordic Center (Mt. Hood) will be offered this year to BSC members. The lesson dates are 2/13, 2/26, and 3/5.
The workshop will be directed by experienced Teacup Nordic Club skiers. Cost does not include Teacup trails passes (discounted
passes can be purchased from BSC). Attendees need to provide their skate ski equipment. This is a class for both downhill and
Nordic skiers who can effectively snowplow. Pre-conditioning is helpful to learn skate ski techniques. We will meet at the south end
of the Gateway Elks Lodge parking lot at 8:45 am to carpool to Teacup. The workshop will start at 11 am and end about 1 pm. Sign

Red Fir Lane will be a month later this year on President's weekend in February. This trip got its name because all the houses we
stayed in were on Red Fir Lane in Sunriver, but we moved after 10 years to a different section with newer and larger homes. Four
of our six homes will be next to Circle 7 plus two others about a quarter of a mile away on the banks of the Deschutes River. There
will be a long gravel driveway and a ski trail through the woods connecting all 6 houses. It is easy to arrange carpools for downhill
and cross country skiing or snowshoeing and walk to the Happy Hours and dinners with everyone so close. Dinners will be catered
on Saturday and Sunday. In the evenings we play pinochle or enjoy a movie or just relax in the hot tub. Coming on this trip is a
great way to meet others if you are new to the group or to hook up with old friends. Please join us. The event price includes all

The perfect downhill or cross country trip! We will be staying at the Blue Lake Inn again this year, within a few blocks of the
casinos and the Heavenly gondola. Each room has a refrigerator and microwave. Downhill - We'll be playing it by ear and taking
advantage of any lift ticket deals that are offered by the 16 different ski areas (Squaw, Heavenly, Sierra, Northstar, Alpine
Meadows, Kirkwood, etc.). We will discuss our findings at the pre-trip meeting and perhaps collect some money to pre-buy some of

Anthony Lakes has a base altitude of 7000 feet and is the second largest Nordic trail system in Oregon with 30K (18.64 miles) of
groomed trails. Their Nordic Center provides a central meeting point and cozy shelter with large rock fireplace for Nordic skiers with
a larger Downhill Ski Lodge within a short ski distance. The Downhill area boasts of excellent powder and we have experienced it! If
you snowshoe you can come too under the Nordic ski trip cost. Ski passes for Friday and Saturday will be covered in trip cost. We
should have some great skiing just before we decide to hang up our skis for the season. We will stay in LaGrande, Oregon at an
Inn with 24 hour pool and hot tub. Lunches are provided for ski days, breakfasts for all days provided by the motel, and one dinner

Bergie Garden Group members will learn about plant propagation at the upcoming January meeting. Lynn Cox, outgoing president
of the Washington County Master Gardeners, will give a Power Point presentation and a demonstration on techniques for starting
new plants from cuttings and other methods. While taking more time to bring plants to maturity, compared with buying from a
nursery, doing propagation yourself can save on the cost of acquiring new plants and allows sharing excess with friends and
neighbors.
Directions: From Beaverton, take TV (Tualatin Valley) Hwy to SW 185th. Turn right and drive north 1 mile to Honeywood Drive.
Turn left and go 1 long block to 18750. Coming from Portland, take 185th Exit, turn south and drive 2 miles to Honeywood Drive,
which is the 4th Street to the right past Baseline Road.

Directions: From the west take Hwy 217 east to the I-5 ramp north. Go north to Exit 295, Tailors Ferry Rd off ramp. At the stop
sign at the bottom of the off ramp turn right onto 35th Ave. Take 35th to Huber (identified by a blinking red 4-way stop light). Turn
left onto Huber. Continuing on Huber * you will encounter 4 speed bumps. After the fourth one turn left onto Quail Post Road (this
is a private drive entrance for Quail Park Community). There is no parking on Quail Post. Park on Huber and walk in. The house
number is very close to that entrance. From Portland take I-5 south to Barbur Blvd off ramp. Go south on Barbur to the multi -directional intersection where Capital Highway/I-5/and Barbur intersect (just past the Barbur Transit Center). Since the left turn
onto Capital Highway is restricted - proceed past the intersection on Barbur and take the left turn behind Starbucks onto Huber.
Cross over Capital Hwy and following Huber you will come to 35th Ave. (identified by a blinking red 4-way stop light). Stay straight
on Huber and follow the directions above *

This day event is taking place on a Tuesday morning for all of those lucky enough to not be working that day. We will car pool at 9
am from the Gateway Elks or at 9:30 am from Shari's in Newberg to the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum. If carpooling isn't
appealing, meet us in front of the IMAX theater. You can take in a movie for $6. For those who would like to participate, docents
will meet us at 11 am for a small group guided tour of the Aviation Museum. There is so much to see and learn here that I don't
think anyone will regret taking the time to visit these two outstanding Museums. The buildings are new, the exhibits are amazing,
and there are docents on hand who are very familiar with the aircraft. This will be Women in Aviation month and I am hoping the
speaker will be available to us. Each museum has a restaurant and a wine tasting bar so you can sample and/or purchase wines
from the many local wineries. The grounds are spacious and you can even get in a little walk to top of the morning.
