PLACE NAME MEANINGS (from www.piulapublications.com)
Capalaba
The name is an Aboriginal word meaning place of possum scrub.
Coorparoo
It is possible that the name derives from the Aboriginal name of the Creek, now
known as Norman Creek, probably recorded as Koolpuroom by the early surveyors,
which was associated with the presence of mosquitos. Another possible explanation
for the name is that it is derived from Coorparoo Creek, reportedly using an
Aboriginal word, Yuggera language, Turrbal dialect, Coorparoo clan word indicating
the sound of the gentle dove
Indooroopilly
The Aboriginal word for the area yinduru-pilly meant gully of leeches.
Murrarie
Murrarie is one of those districts that got its name when the railway came through.
An Aboriginal word meaning sticky or muddy was adopted.
Nambour
The town derived its name from Naamba cattle station selected by William Samwells
in 1870. It was the Aboriginal name for the red flowering tea tree (callistemon
viminalis) which grew plentifully in the area. The Aboriginal people used the paper
bark for warmth.
Woolloongabba
Known to the cricketing world as The Gabba Tom Petrie claimed that if the original
Aboriginal word had been retained it would have been Wulonkoppa. The word
meant whirling around and it was the name for a series of waterholes where after
rain the water ran from one to another swirling around before rushing out again.
There is an early reference to wattle-scented Woolloongabba.
Wynnum
This was the Aboriginal name for the breadfruit tree. Tom Petrie spelt it winnam.
