John is making the news again but not as "Daredevil Bad McFad (he tried to fly with homemade rockets strapped to himself or being shot out of homemade cannons back in the ‘70s & ‘80s) nor as chili/barbecue Cook-off judge but as film producer. John entered Texas Monthly’s "Where I’m From" short film contest and his production, "Lyndon’s Hills" was named first runner up. His film was part of the Austin Film Festival screening at the Bullock Texas State History Museum. John has been a friend and Luckenbach Regular for many years. . Clark & Ray Benson • Sunday, Nov. 13th The LUCKENBACH MOON is published monthly by Luckenbach Texas, Inc. Opinions expressed in The LUCKENBACH MOON do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the owners, directors, or staff of Luckenbach Texas, Inc. We would like to acknowledge and thank the following “Somebodies” who made this month’s MOON possible: Peter Cedarstacker aka Hondo Crouch, Becky Crouch Barrales, John Raven, C. P. Vaughn and Robbyn Dodd. 2 lemon and nutmeg. The nutmeg was just to confuse the taste buds of even the most dedicated gourmet. The Santiago Smith holiday party carried out the CHEESE DIP motif beautifully. There were chips sewn on the curtains and sowed on the rug. The rugs were of the same color and texture of the CHEESE DIP. Well, this is the ninth day of our new year and we put all our CHEESE DIPS together and threw IT in the creek. The alligator wouldn’t even eat it. No guts. Note: From 1961-1973, Hondo (nom de plume, or alias, or AKA Peter Cedarstacker) wrote a social satire column for the Comfort News. The fictional town of Cedar Creek and all of its characters eventually became the real town of Luckenbach and all of its characters (and Luckenbach has some real characters!) The MOON reserves a special corner for Peter Cedarstacker, Writer, as a corner of wit and human insight for us today. -Becky Crouch Barrales Peter Cedarstacker Writer The Wurstbottom family of Big Flat (sometimes we call ‘em the Big Flat Wurstbottoms) motored to Cedar Creek for Christmas. It seems like everyone was exchangin’ presents that didn’t fit at the store, Monday of this week. I took my sox and tie back. They fit but the colors clashed, Mama said. Think they were the same ones I took back last year. I think our kinfolks must have longer holidays that most folks. They’r still here. Ho hum. Mrs. Spite had a real big party with people to match and brought her left-overs over. So did everybody else and I’m up to here (I’m showin’ you with my finger on my tonsil) with CHEESE DIP. Starting with Dec. 15, CHEESE DIPS seem to become a creeping disease, and by Jan. 1 Operation CHEESE DIP has worked up into a disturbance of the social calendar as well of the digestive track. People find themselves racing, stumblin’ from one party to another just to dip their chip into someone’s exotic ten second CHEESE DIP, and say ‘ummmm, what’s in it? Everyone in Cedar Creek has a secret recipe. Some don’t stay secret long. Blow flies find ‘em rite away. Like the dip Mrs. Wurstbottom gave us with chunks of finical fish, (well exposed) lumps of limburger, and slick spinach. But we have eight pounds of strong, extra strong CHEESE DIP with black specks (dormant) in it. Some of our dips are so pickley they simply lock my salivary glands wide open. What a trick! The green and red striped CHEESE DIP looks heavenly but it’s bitter. Like quinine and alum. You’re suppose to eat more chips with that type I guess or frantically drink more. One dip that was too tart had strong anchovies, sour cream (the kind we usta throw out), Harvest Classic October 21 & 22 3 Another genius idea of Abbey’s was the breaking of the Guinness Book of World Records for the most amount of guitar players playing the same song nonstop for 10 minutes. It was quite an awesome sight to see 1,869 people playing "Let’s Go to Luckenbach, Texas". The idea was born from Abbey’s observation of the Picker’s Circle. Kerrville Folk Festival producer Dalis Allen combined efforts with Abbey to create a fund raiser for guitar lessons as good therapy for warriors with head trauma injuries. EVERYBODY’S SOMEBODY by Becky Crouch Barrales Abbey Road’s Road to Luckenbach "Thank God you’re on this earth!" cried famous blues musician W.C. Clark with tears in his eyes. "Or I never woulda seen or played in Luckenbach!" He was talking to Abbey, our Events Manager, who invented the Blues Festival at Luckenbach. Abbey, who doesn’t have a last name but is called "Abbey Road", has created some of Luckenbach’s most successful and amazing events in the last five years, simply due to her acute observations and love of Luckenbach. "One day the wind blew, the stars realigned and I found myself getting lost in Luckenbach," Abbey said. "I brought blues to Luckenbach. They didn’t know much about that kind of music here. I’m from Navasota, Blues Capital of Texas. I grew up listening to the Godfather of Blues, Mance Lipscomb, folk and blues hero of the South. Blues is the base of most all music, including Country Western. The Blues Festival has brought the likes of world legend Pine Top Perkins, Ruthie Foster and Marcia Ball. It’ll be the last Saturday of January." Revolutionary for Luckenbach is Abbey’s building up of the social media world. For a place that’s hard to find (due to stolen signs), likes to be at the end of the road, she has brought Luckenbach up to modern cyber tech status with her wide viewers on Face Book and Twitter. In spite of Luckenbach’s back woods and backwards philosophy of "this is where the world stops", people want to communicate about it. "I keep Hondo alive," she says, "quoting from my bible, the Hondo book, reminding the world about him." "I love my job. I wake up every day wondering how I can get the world – or someone sitting in Michigan – to hear about, come and see Luckenbach, with great entertainment. I’m a people watcher. Their reactions are fun to watch. They meet up with friends or total strangers. Luckenbach really is the center of the universe, as Hondo said." 4 One day an 18-year-old girl from Katy came into the store with her boyfriend. "My mom and dad said I just had to come to Luckenbach," she said. "They used to come here years ago. But I just don’t get it!" As she walked further into the store a chicken had just laid an egg on a pile of CDs, and let out a loud squawk and cackle. Abbey picked up the still hot egg and put it into the girl’s hands. She shrieked, "Oh my God!" and threw it up in the air. It landed on the floor, didn’t even break. Abbey made her welcome even warmer. She comp’d her a Coke and a t-shirt. With her new t-shirt on, grinning from ear to ear, the girl finally admitted, "I get it. This is Luckenbach!" P.S. Happy 45th Birthday to Abbey December 27th. Happy Birthday to Gary P. Nunn and Hondo, December 4th. Be sure to come to the 5th Annual Blues Festival, Saturday, January 28th! He was one of the original group of Austin musicians who got music started in Austin. Visiting was good all evening. Everyone was a card carrying Luckenbachian. We all had "remember when"s. Clayton Knopp even showed up. Clayton was Luckenbach resident before the Indians got there. For a unexpected treat, Allegaini Jani showed up with a box of free kittens. It was as tender and tasty as you could get. There were the side dishes too. When I have an option in a barbecue line I only take meat, bread and potato salad. Coleslaw and beans just take up space that I can use for more meat and potato salad. One of the great features of the meal were the plastic dishes. They were very sturdy and didn’t soak up the juice.
