Last month I spoke of strategies to support early readers. This month I will give some strategies to encourage older readers to continue to improve their skills. 1. Most important for any age is encouraging reading every day. It doesn’t have to be any more than 15 minutes. For struggling readers, it is important that they read aloud to someone or read to a younger child. For fluent readers, setting time aside everyday as reading time. 2. Use prediction strategies. Ask your child what he or she thinks is going to happen next in the story. You can do this at the end of each page, or at the end of a chapter for older readers. 3. Ask questions while you read with or to your child. Be sure to ask your child questions about what has happened in the story you are reading, such as “Why do you think Percy spent time in the water?” or “Why do you think the author set the story in New York City?” Ask a mixture of factual questions (the what) and more complex inferential questions (the why and the how). This enables you to monitor your child’s understanding of the text. 4. Use the ‘retelling strategy’. For particularly intricate stories, it is useful when you ask your child to retell what has happened. This sequencing of key events can be verbal or written and can be done either at the end of the story or at the end of each section. 5. Teach your child to summarize. Show your child how to summarize a story in a few sentences. You may want to encourage your child to visualize the setting, characters and action in his or her mind. This will help your child practice identifying main ideas. 6. Crack open the dictionary. Look up words together to talk about their uses and meanings. Your interest in building your own vocabulary is important for your child to see. It’s never too late or too early to read. Research suggests there is a strong correlation between reading and academic success. Happy Reading! Our garden is in full swing and we are looking for volunteers to help maintain the garden this year. Volunteers are needed to sign up for a week’s worth of “garden duty” in the spring and summer. During this week, volunteers will tend the garden, and harvest any veggies that are ready to keep for themselves. If the veggies are unwanted, they can be donated to the Hope Street Church. We are looking for donations of marigolds, onions, herbs, and other pest control plants. If you, or another family member is willing to donate your time, efforts and/or garden perennials, please fill out and send back the attached form. It can be returned to Mrs. Donner (Grade 2) or Mrs. Watson (Gr. 1) For further updates on our progress or to find out how you can help more, please follow our community on our twitter: @WebsterNiblock or on our school’s website: http://www.websterniblock.ca/ Thank you!
