Quail Notes May 2017 Celebrating Grace, Making Disciples, Making a Difference Dear Friends and Members of Desert Hills Lutheran, I've always loved the month of May. My family celebrates many birthdays in May: my daughter's, our middle son's, my step-father’s, Rev. Wally Mohr’s, and oh yes- mine! Growing up in Minnesota, we always hoped that the snow would be off the golf courses and that the spring flowers would begin to show. In Arizona, May means that the real heat returns. Here in Green Valley, we also begin to notice a little less traffic and a few more parking spots. Ahhh, the month of May... We begin our next new member series of classes on May 4. This is a seven-week course that is offered on Thursdays at 9:30am and 6:30pm. Come and see if Desert Hills is the place for you, either as a full time or as an associate member. I'll be preaching each weekend in May. On May 20/21, we will highlight the annual Global Leadership Summit (GLS) that will take place August 10/11. I'm hoping that we will double our GLS attendance from 2016. I plan to attend the Summit in Minnesota and I hope to be joined by some family members there. My sabbatical starts June 1 and continues through August. I'm so thankful for the time away. A sabbatical, or time of rest, is a very rare gift for clergy and I'm very grateful. Pastor Ken Nyhusmoen will take over as Senior Pastor. All of our activities and worship services will continue while I am gone. I pray that there will be no drop-off in attendance, since we need to continue our momentum of celebrating grace, making disciples, and making a difference. Desert Hills must remain strong over the summer months so that we can jump into the fall with a rested and rejuvenated Pastor Martin. Council Minute Highlights ..... Finally, the greatest gift of my sabbatical is all of the time that my wife Julie and I will spend traveling, catching up with one another, and enjoying time together. But first – let’s keep in mind the month of May. We know that the time will go quickly, and so please help Pastor Ken continue to greet 'one more' every week. Blessings to you all! Help Needed For Grief Support Group at DHLC Rev. Wally Mohr has been asked to develop a curriculum to be used in a Grief Support Group for DHLC and has set the summer as time to develop this curriculum. There are many grief support group video programs available for purchase, but Wally would like to develop a curriculum that will be “tailored” for the Green Valley and DHLC community. Therefore he needs input and suggestions from individuals who have participated in or led grief groups in the past. Those who are willing to give continued input will be kept “up to date” as the program develops. If you would be willing to provide some input and suggestions please send your name and e-mail to Wally at [email protected] and he will send you an e-mail with some questions and room for suggestions. The Grief Support Group will be a part of our Pastoral Care Ministry and should provide hope and support for those who are grieving a loved one. It is a much needed ministry at DHLC. You may have heard the sewing machines running and lots of laughter as the Bee had another very busy month. We are meeting the needs of nearby charities and creating beautiful quilts for our annual Fall Boutique Sale on Nov. 11. You are encouraged to continue making your amazing arts and crafts as well. Charities who will receive the proceeds were selected: Genesis House, Youth on their Own, and 51 Homeless Veterans. WELCA will send funds from the food and bake sales to the Navajo Lutheran Mission School. A request for 5 patriotic quilts needed at the May Honor Flights Program as Veterans go to Washington, DC has been fulfilled. We have pledges to provide 12 additional lap quilts to this service over the next year. Red, white and blue fabric donations are welcome. We “passed the hat” to collect $366 for linens at the new Genesis House expansion. Vonnie Johnson invited her Cross Border Alliance Quilting group from Nogales, Sonora, to be our guests at the Sewing Bee Meeting on March 22. Four women and a leader shared our processes and fellowship, leaving with ideas, enthusiasm and several bags of sewing materials. A generous donation of unsold fabrics was received from Desert Patch Quilt Shop as they closed their doors the end of March. Many of our Thrivent Action Team gift cards were spent at that location. We will continue to meet all year long on Wednesday mornings from 9 until noon. Come as you are able. This is the month that all choirs, but one, take time off until October 2017. The only exception is the 9:45 Sunday worship service. The choir at this service sings year round. If you sing in another choir and want to sing in the summer also, you are welcome to join us. We rehearse on Thursdays at 6:30pm. Last summer we started a new tradition of having a congregational choir made up of volunteers from each congregation singing in choir loft at the 8am and 11:15 services. By sitting in the choir loft, where microphones are located, they helped lead the hymn singing at those services. Hopefully, we can have about a dozen volunteers each Sunday morning. Please think about joining us in the choir loft at the 8am or 11:15am services. To all of our singers and musicians who take off to other locations, safe travel. See you in the fall! Grief Waits. No matter one’s age or place in life, unresolved grief is common. It doesn’t just go away unless it is processed and faced. Grief waits. Recently Britain’s Prince Harry, just 12 when his mother Princess Diana died, publicly told of his struggle with grief. “I spent 20 years suppressing it, refusing to think about it, pretending life was great. I shut down my emotions, though anger would surface, and it led to years of chaos and inner turmoil,” he shared. Finally, at the encouragement of his brother Prince William, he faced his grief head on, talked about it -- “spilled my guts” – to someone who would listen. He came to terms with his loss and surfaced a healthier person. If you know someone struggling with unresolved issues or experiences, encourage them to explore the help DHLC’s Stephen Ministry offers. As fellow Christians, trained in listening, Stephen Ministers can help make the conversation happen. For more information, contact Stephen Minister Leaders Wally or Faye Mohr at 520-232-3352 or [email protected] or Emilie Odde at 612-710-9444 or [email protected]. Foundation Corner — Desert Hill Lutheran Church was host to two Luther Seminary students on the weekend of March 24-26. Both students gave greetings at all but the last worship service on Sunday morning. Both women were warmly welcomed by our congregation. Someone said they would have enjoyed hearing them speak longer. We had asked them to be brief in order to keep our worship services on schedule. However, they both made reference to the necessity of scholarship support they get from our Foundation. When you tally up tuition, books, housing, food and modest living costs the total comes to over $30,000 per year average at ELCA seminaries. Our scholarship grants are currently $8,000 per year for each student. We would like to do more but this is all our current resources allow. Our Foundation has committed itself to support seminary students and others who are preparing for leadership in the church. We are aware that the church needs some of our brightest young people to commit themselves to ministry without fear of crushing education debt. We invite all our members to consider a gift of support to Desert Hills Lutheran Foundation to assist with Christian Leadership Scholarships. We also make grants to other church agencies and to local helping agencies. Men’s Ministry at DHLC Men’s Photography Group Do you have an interest in Bookmen — The Bookmen meet photography? Men's Health: will not meet again until October. Verse of the Month 1st Thessalonians 5:16 “Rejoice always” Notes May 2017 Incorporating spiritual values into health education During the week of May 6-12 the Nurses Christian Fellowship invites Churches to Pray for Nursing. This special week prompts us to remember nurses who represent Jesus to patients, families, and co-workers. * We pray that nurses and nursing students will experience God’s encouragement as they face opportunities and challenges in caring for others in the name of Jesus Christ. * In light of the ongoing nursing shortage, we pray that students will be called to enter nursing and faculty called to teach them. We also pray for nurses and students to provide safe, competent and compassionate care. * We pray for nurses and nursing students in our congregation, as well as other health care providers in the church and community, to be strong in the Lord. * We pray for healing for those experiencing illness in our church and that people in our congregation will be witnesses of God’s love and compassion to them. * We pray that God would empower and equip nurses and students to represent Jesus, and that He will use Christian Fellowship and the Journal of Christian Nursing to bring them knowledge, hope and courage. Almighty God our heavenly Father, you declare your glory and show forth your handiwork in the heavens and in the earth. Deliver us in our nursing practice from the service of self alone, that we may do the work you give us to do in truth and beauty and for the common good; for the sake of him who came among us as one who serves, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
