These organisations realised that an international cooperation was essential for public safety, that they would benefit from each other’s expertise and that it was not possible to restrict an avalanche hazard to within national borders, especially due to skiers and backcountry tourists frequently engaging in cross-border skiing and moving freely between countries. People in Bavaria and in other alpine states go to the mountains for all kinds of activities. We are aware of our responsibility towards our citizens and wish to ensure them safe access to the mountains by creating an awareness of the dangers that exist. This year, 33 years after the first conference, the EAWS boast 35 separate avalanche warning services from 16 countries. These organisations are invited to share their knowledge and to help decide on innovation within the EAWS. The aim of EAWS was and still is to improve cooperation and communication among its members. An international harmonisation of the avalanche bulletins is paramount in order to provide standardised and expedient information for the public. These goals can only be reached if experts and users exchange ideas, experiences, needs and operational practices. In-depth communication is crucial at all levels, especially for creating hazard awareness with third parties and the public. We would therefore like to invite all members of avalanche warning services, alpine clubs and other public stakeholders to meet up and focus on the common goal of communication and avalanche hazard training. We wish to hold a panel discussion on the second day to discuss challenges, problems and experiences. This will help us identify upcoming topics and establish a road map for EAWS for the next years. The Bavarian Avalanche Warning Service would like to contribute to improved communication within and outside the EAWS whose key aim is to increase public awareness of avalanche hazards. I wish the meeting at Lake Starnberg every success.
