Whole school creative curriculum,
pupil and staff learning
St Gregory’s Primary Y5&Y6
Residential Courses, September
Woodhouse Primary School
Residential
The two courses are designed to establish,
through outdoor learning and adventure, the
attitudes, skills and values required for a
successful school year. The Y6 course is also an
extension and progression of the Y5 experience.
The Ingestre Arts team developed a programme
of Visual Art, Music, Dance and Drama activities
to support the school’s ambition to use creative
learning across the curriculum. WWI and the
Tudors were chosen as topics to creatively
explore, linked by Time Travel.
Head Teacher’s comment:
“The residential experiences enable our
children to start the school year
positively, working together to maximise
their learning potential. Our staff and
children build good relationships in a
stimulating, fun environment. Centre
staff are supportive, friendly and
approachable and ensure the children’s
needs are catered for.”

Whole-school learning
topics launch
V P Primary Academy, September
Each year group launched their term’s learning
with an active, “irresistible” programme of day
activities. Topics were WW2, Gulliver’s Travels;
Tudor Explorers; Magical Outdoor World; Fire;
Nursery Rhymes; and Teddy Bears’ Picnic.
All children achieved Arts Award “Discover“;
their arts residential has contributed to
achieving Arts Mark Gold Accreditation.
Throughout the programme the creative
teaching and learning skills school staff were
developed; part of the school’s Improvement
Objective Priorities.
Teacher’s comment:
“The programme was excellent – we
achieved so much more than we
expected and it’s had a massive impact
on how we use arts across the school.”

Thematic learning brought to
life – irresistible learning
Preparing for Transition
- The Learning Adventure
Moorlands Primary School Y5&Y6
Residential
Ryders Hayes Primary Y6 Residential,
June
The school is strong on creative and thematic
learning. This year’s topic was “The Lord of the
Rings”. With centre and school staff in role,
themed food and props galore, the children
journeyed through ‘middle earth’ experiencing
adventures and challenges linked to key themes
and sections of the book. The course culminated
in gaining a ring of power, building ‘Mount
Doom’, and finally destroying their ring.
The Learning Adventure, recorded in the
children’s Learning Passports, links activities
including hill climbing, survival skills,
photography, role play, and animal care, to
develop skills and qualities in preparation for
secondary school life. The residential setting
encourages transferable learning.
Individual Learning through
adventurous activities
Ocker Hill Academy Year 6
Individual target setting makes this outdoor
adventure and environmental programme come
alive. Before the course, each pupil agrees with
teachers an individual goal based on the SEAL
principals, and SMART goal setting curriculum.
Through the week this is public, referenced and
referred to as it is worked upon by the centre
team and visiting staff to help the students
attain this goal.
Teacher comment regarding an
inspirational moment:
“One child who didn’t interact before
really showed compassion and played with
other children. A genuine breakthrough.”
Teacher’s comment:
“Our annual trip to Edgmond Hall is one
which staff and children alike look
forward to. From the moment of booking
to the final goodbye, centre staff work
tirelessly to ensure a fun and educational
programme of activities.
The children treasure their Learning
Passports and can talk of nothing but
the visit for the remainder of the
summer term.“

We are open to all ideas as to how
we can support schools in delivering
creative, adventurous learning.
