Reading: “We’re going camping!”
“We’re going camping!” Maggie sang as she
ran upstairs to her bedroom. “We’re going
camping!” she continued singing as she pulled
a duffel bag and a backpack down from the
top shelf of her closet. She sat down on the
side of her bed and spent a minute thinking
about it. Then she started to make piles of
jeans and shirts and socks. She found her
heavy jacket and her hiking boots. In no time
at all, she had finished packing.
“But why do we have to go camping?”
whined Bart, Maggie’s twin brother. “I want
to stay home. I want to watch television. I
want to play my stereo. I want to use my
computer. I’m not an outdoor person!” He
was so slow about packing that Maggie had to
help him. She found all of his things and
helped him stuff them into a couple of
backpacks. “There,” Maggie said, “and do try
to be cheerful. At least, we will be able to
spend some time together.”
The car trip seemed interminable. It went on
and on and on. Bart put on his earphones and
listened to music. Maggie looked at the
scenery and talked to their mother and dad.
But after a while, Bart ran out of music and
started to whine again. Dad looked at Bart in
the rear view mirror and said, “Bart, if you
can’t say something pleasant, don’t say
anything!” They rode the rest of the way in
silence. Mother rolled her eyes and grinned at
Maggie and Maggie grinned back.

Reading: The kudzu vine is one of the
The kudzu vine is one of the fastest growing
plants in the world. It can grow two feet in
just one day. Where does this strange plant
come from?
Kudzu comes all the way from China and
Japan. It belongs to the pea family. Kudzu has
hairy stems and purple, red, and yellow
flowers. Its fruit has many seeds and smells
like grapes.
Kudzu plants have very deep roots. That is
why farmers brought the plant to Florida in
the 1930s. They hoped that kudzu would help
to stop the soil from washing away. They also
fed the plant to their farm animals. But soon
farmers had a big problem. Kudzu began to
take over. It grew too fast. The vines covered
whole trees. Farmers tried to stop kudzu. But
it was a very hard job.
Today farmers think carefully before planting
kudzu. Kudzu is useful. But the plant must be
cut back all the time. If not, kudzu becomes a
terrible pest.

lived ..........
Choose the appropriate words to complete
the passage. To make the right choice,
sometimes you have to read the text that
follows.
Some plants and animals lived long before
people were on the earth. No one ever saw
them. Yet we know what they looked like.
How? We have found their bones, turned into

Scientists discover them everywhere. One of
the most interesting places is in the middle of
Los Angeles. At Rancho La Brea there are
pools of tar over 15,000 years old. Many

wolves, giant birds, and tigers with huge teeth.
None were exactly like the animals of today.
So scientists could see how animals changed
