Barring Yanabul Expression of Interest Open: 1 December 2016 Close: 8 January 2017 Guidelines The City of Melbourne is many things to our community. It is your country, your birth land or the place you call home. It is a gathering place and ceremonial ground, a site of resistance and a nighttime playground for the young and young at heart. Yirramboi First Nations Arts Festival is a citywide blak out, gathering creative visionaries from across Australia, Victoria and the world. A ten day feast of arts and events that honours yesterday and dreams forward into tomorrow. Yirramboi is seeking Expressions of Interest from artists, collectives and community groups to present creative performances and activities on the streets and public spaces of Melbourne over the final weekend of Yirramboi, for Barring Yanabul. Barring Yanabul is Yirramboi’s day-long program of takeover theatre: a city-wide blak out of local talent celebrating the power and diversity of First Peoples arts and cultures. On Saturday 13 May 2017, audiences will wander the streets of Melbourne’s CBD and be entertained, enlightened and enthralled by singers, weavers, poets, actors, writers, woodworkers, circus performers, dancers, musicians, comedians and more… If you have a new idea, an activity, a performance, or an idea that you want to put out there, in public spaces, then Yirramboi wants to hear from you. What is involved? YIRRAMBOI is seeking Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander artist/s to present live performances or installations on Saturday 13th May 2017 in various public spaces around the City of Melbourne’s Central Business District (refer to Appendix 2 for site examples). Yirramboi is seeking to commission multiple live performances and installations covering any artistic genre. Projects must: • Be suitable for presentation in outdoor, public spaces (including minimal technical / production requirements, and able to be installed and de-installed quickly) • Enhance the visibility of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people to the wider City of Melbourne population; • Show new ways of working in public spaces to engage audiences and create dialogue. Yirramboi will produce the project including confirmation of sites, the securing of relevant permits and production management across the event. You must visit your proposed site/s as part of your EOI planning to ensure your project will work in the space. We cannot guarantee that specific spaces will be available, so consider more than one potential site. The Yirramboi team will advise on any site restrictions or challenges and assist in advising the optimum site for a proposal. You can use the maps utility through the City Of Melbourne website to assist in site research: http://maps.melbourne.vic.gov.au/ What is the budget for proposals? Budgets of up to $3000 are available depending on the scope of your project, number of performances / activations, and any production requirements. The fee will include any rehearsal and preparation costs, and your time in managing and delivering your work. All Barring Yanabul artists will be supported by the Yirramboi event team who will manage production, permits, sites and undertake all marketing and communications around the event. Please be sure to let us know how you plan to manage delivering more than one project, and feel free to contact us with any questions. Who can apply? To apply for this project, you must: • • • • Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; Be a practicing artist / organisation with demonstrated experience applicable to the proposed performance outcome, including the project management skills to realise the project in public space in conjunction with the Yirramboi event management team; Be 18 years or over Be based in the state of Victoria. Selection of participants In assessing your EOI the following will be considered: • • • • • Do you meet the criteria above in ‘Who can apply’? Are you available for Saturday 13th May 2017 and production meetings in the lead up? Does your project demonstrate artistic merit – quality, integrity and originality? Is your idea suitable for presentation in outdoor, public space? Does your project show new ways of working in public spaces to engage audiences and create dialogue?
