PASTORAL REGION ONE St. Augustine, St. Benedict the Moor & St. Mary Churches: Pastoral Region One May 21, 2017 Held in captivity more years than anyone cared to remember, the Lord sent a man, a Jewish man, raised by the Egyptians, raised as an Egyptian to free them from their bondage. The Lord gave Moses many signs to perform so that the Jews, as well as the Egyptians might know of God’s mighty power. Moses could turn his staff into a snake and then back into a staff. He could put his hand to his breast and it would become leprous, put his hand back to his breast and it would be clean. Pharaoh fought against God’s power, and at first refused to let God’s people go. Pharaoh could not defeat God’s plan and relented. God’s people were finally free. They wandered in the desert often hungry and thirsty. The people grumbled and complained to Moses. “Why would God bring us out of Egypt to die of hunger and thirst in a foreign land”? But God always provided for them. God sent them manna left by the morning dew as bread for them to eat, the forerunner of the Eucharist. God would have Quail cover the ground so the Jews could have meat to eat. God had Moses strike a rock with his staff and water would flow to conquer their thirst. Their faith renewed, the Jews could make it through another day. They were singing: My deliverer is coming, my deliverer is standing by My deliverer is coming, my deliverer is standing by. In his day, Job was a wealthy man. Job owned thousands and thousands of goats, sheep, oxen and camels. He had hundreds of hired men to tend his flocks. He had seven children that he loved with all his heart. Job praised the Lord daily and thanked Him for all that the Lord had given him. The devil said: “It is easy to praise and thank the Lord when things are going so well, but I bet I could get Job to curse the Lord should all his wealth disappear”. And so, the devil sent marauders to steal the flock and kill the hired hands. The devil sent a powerful wind to demolish the house where all seven of Job’s children were. Job became covered in horrible, painful boils which caused him so much pain. Job’s friends gathered and asked him: “What have you done against God that He should let this evil thing attach itself to you?” Job said: “I have done nothing against the Lord God. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord”. And Job was singing: My deliverer is coming, my deliverer is standing by My deliverer is coming, my deliverer is standing by. A young couple has their four-year-old son at the doctor’s office. Out of nowhere a lump has grown on the back of their young son’s leg, and a small dark mole sits atop the lump. The doctor freezes the mole in hopes of obtaining a biopsy to be sure of the moles nature, but the boy will not hold still. Mom and Dad try to distract the boy’s attention to no avail. Try as they may, Mom and Dad cannot hold the boy still long enough for the doctor to perform the biopsy. The doctor prescribes a sedative to be taken before a return visit. At the return visit, the doctor was successful at retrieving a biopsy. Nothing left for the parents to do now but pray and wait. Twelve agonizing days go by, days where parents are afraid to let go of their children, twelve agonizing days wondering if their prayers are being heard, wondering if their child is going to be OK. The doctor confirms that it is indeed cancer, and the lump needs to be removed as quickly as possible. The surgery date is set, the cancerous lump is removed. The doctor believes that all the cancer is removed and there should be no more problems for the child. Mom and Dad were singing: My deliverer is coming, my deliverer is standing by My deliverer is coming, my deliverer is standing by. Brothers and Sisters, God is all about our salvation. Jesus came into the world just like you and I to be a witness to God and his majesty. Because Jesus died to redeem us, and then rose from the dead, we have hope that when we die, we too shall rise with Him. Jesus and the Holy Spirit work in concert for our salvation. The Holy Spirit, which is God’s power in action, leads us on the path to salvation. We are led by the Holy Spirit, just like the Jews were led by the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. Some of us might be crippled by sin, others paralyzed by fear, whatever we are going through in our lives, God is right there with us. He will not leave us orphans, He will come to us. Sing with me: My deliverer is coming, my deliverer is standing by My deliverer is coming, my deliverer is standing by. My deliverer is coming, my deliverer is standing by My deliverer is coming, my deliverer is standing by.
