Rob Chapman Vice President Member and Technical Services Rob Chapman is vice president of Member and Technical Services at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). He drives electric sector participation in EPRI’s collaborative research so results are applied and value is effectively communicated throughout EPRI member organizations. Chapman is also EPRI’s executive sponsor for the Technology Management Committee Advisory Group. Leadership At EPRI Chapman has guided a steady increase in investment in research even as the industry continues to consolidate. While the number of publically owned electric utilities in the United States has declined by 20 percent since 2008, Chapman has been able to retain flat U.S. funding while increasing overall collaborative funding by $50 million through a combination of increased government collaboration and the acquisition of international members. Critical to sustaining this growth is the need to ensure that value is captured and communicated throughout each member’s organization. Chapman accomplishes this by annually providing member-specific EPRI engagement reports that include specific value statements about the impact of EPRI research. As the executive sponsor of the Technology Management Committee Chapman has worked with the Managers of EPRI Technology Transfer (METT) community to improve EPRI’s member experience; member satisfaction scores are consistently above 91 percent in overall satisfaction with EPRI. These scores reflect on-going member/EPRI collaboration that is focused on continuous improvement in project management, tools that facilitate member engagement, and more effective means to transfer EPRI knowledge. Chapman has instilled in his team a highly consultative business approach, requiring that EPRI’s Member and Electric Power Research Institute Technical Services team knows as much about our members’ strategic issues and business objectives as they do about the relevance of EPRI research. Professional background Prior to joining EPRI Chapman worked for Pacific Gas & Electric Energy Services Company (PG&E) from 1995-1999. He was the director of the western region responsible for leading a team of engineers in establishing value-added integrated energy services for commercial and industrial customers. In this role he was successful in closing PG&E Energy Services’ first Premium Power Service agreement that ensured continuous reliability for a high-tech manufacturing company through deployment of proprietary technology. Chapman also worked for PG&E in a variety of roles including major account management where he conducted energy efficiency audits and promoted participation in demand response programs. He was recognized for his contribution in leading PG&E’s Power Savings Partners program with the city of San Jose which was focused on managing load growth through energy efficiency. Education Chapman earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California.
