George M. Murray Elementary School
April 6, 2016
Principal’s Message
Dear Parents and Caregivers:
Welcome back everyone! I hope that you and your family had a great Spring Break that
included many opportunities for rest, relaxation and time with family and friends.
I want to thank you for continuing to support your child’s learning, both at home, and in the
school. Volunteering to help out with school activities, attending special events at the school or
getting involved in the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) are all great ways to stay connected with
our school community. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss your
child’s learning or any other aspect of the school. Working together as a team – learners, staff,
parents and the community – makes George M. Murray Elementary a great place to be.

Hot Lunch Day
Intermediate Ski Trip to Sun Peaks
Another Hot Lunch Day has been planned
for Wednesday, April 13th. Turkey pot pie
will be served, free of charge, to all
interested students. In the interest of being
“environmentally friendly” students are
encouraged to bring a spoon or fork and a
plastic bowl or plate to school on Hot Lunch
Day. After lunch, these items can be
returned home for washing, thereby
decreasing the amount of plastic and paper
we are putting into our local landfill.
We would greatly appreciate some
additional assistance with serving the
lunch in classrooms on April 13th. If you
are able to assist with this, please join us
at 12:00 on April 13th.
Upcoming Events

Try-A-Trade Day at Thompson Rivers
University
Bohden
Two weeks ago, on Friday
March 4th, we went to TRU.
TRU stands for Thompson
River University.
We went there for the
trades program, where you
get to look at different
jobs. Our class and Ms.
Wadlegger’s class went on
the job tour there. The first thing we did was go
to the carpentry section. While we were there,
we sawed off pieces of 2/4 and nailed them to a
board. We did this to prevent vehicles from
rolling backwards down a hill.
Next we went to the welding area, where
we got to make candle holders with brass rings.
We also got to honk the steam engine horns
they had. After that, we went back to our
homeroom and ate lunch that was provided. It
was really tasty. Later we went to the section
where we looked at and learned about lawn
maintenance equipment, and machinery. There
were also greenhouses there that had some
tropical plants like pineapple that couldn’t grow
without the heat of the greenhouse.
Once we finished our tour there, we
went to the mechanics section. They showed us
how to check the oil, check wiper fluid, and
check the air in the tires. They even showed us
how to check to see what size the tires were.
Then a guy in the car taught us how to shift a
manual shifter.

Lastly, we had to put our safety glasses
back in the box. But we got to keep the bags and
the candle holders we soldered. I really liked the
trip to Thompson River University because we
got to have fun learning about different jobs.
Rayden
I went to Thompson
Rivers University for
a trades program. I
had a blast. It was
like I was in a super
awesome bubble.
We left around eight
o’clock; we traveled
for a bit but had fun! I
played on my friend’s
iPad. When we got
there I just took a moment and went “wow.”
When we were inside we walked around for
our first station, we were at carpentry we
used a saw, safety glasses, and
measurement tools and sawed into a block
of wood like a 4-8. When we were done
there we went to plumbing. We used a
blowtorch and some metal and made a
candle holder, then, we used steam horns.
But we only used the small and medium. We
left and had lunch.
When we finished, we went to looking at
cars. The students of the university asked
were the main parts are and how to check
the oil. I honked the car horn and
accidentally scared one of the guys. Then
we left from TRU and I felt happy how it was
to be there. My uncle chad goes there for
psychology. 

On Friday March fourth
my class (Mr. Hangle’s
class) and Wadlegger’s
class went to T.R.U
(Thompson Rivers
University). There we
were going to do some
trading! That morning
the bus was going to
leave at 8:00 in the
morning. The bus took us strait to T.R.U. It
took us two hours to get there. I couldn’t wait
to get there because it’s going to be a long
time before we go to a University or college.
When we got there we all sat down on these
wooden benches for maybe 3 or 4 minutes
then Mr.Hangle, Ms. Wadlegger, my mom and
Declan’s dad came around giving us a bag and
safety goggles. Then a lady that works at the
school told us where our homeroom was and
pointed down the hall way. Our home room
number was 127. Mr.Hangle opened the door
and we got to choose where we sit. I sat in the
back with Bohden and Cedar. We dropped off
our bags and left the homeroom.
After that we walked down a couple trades
and did some plumbing. There we made our
own candleholder out of a cap and a pipe. First
we made the cap stayed on. Second we went
over to the blow torch area and soldered the
cap and the pipe together. Third we dumped
the candle holder in a bucket of water.
Lastly we went and shaved off the metal
bumps. It was so much fun!! After we were
done making our candle holders we got to

blow big huge steam whistles. That was pretty
fun too.
I had so much fun at the University and I hope
we can go there next year too. My favorite
trade was plumbing, because we got to use a
blow torch and blow steam whistles! I wish
some of the kids that couldn’t go could’ve
been there.
