Extraordinary Jubilee Holy Year of Mercy Guardian Angel Cathedral December 8, 2015—November 20, 2016 A Jubilee Year of Mercy Guardian Angel Cathedral Holy Doors We are blessed to be designated as one of the local churches to open a Holy Door of Mercy. As a symbolic gesture of the invitation of our Lord to receive His bountiful mercy and to share with others, Pope Francis opened the Holy Doors of the Basilica in Rome. The Holy Doors of Guardian Angel Cathedral were designated, blessed and opened Tuesday, December 8, 2015 as a sign of welcome and invitation for those who seek God’s mercy. Jesus I trust in you. When you walk through the Holy Doors you receive an indulgence; which is the lessening of the consequences attached to sin. Based on the teachings of the Catholic Church, when you sin, you must go to confession and you are forgiven. Forgiveness applies only to the guilt of your sin; there may still be consequences of your sin that you may have to pay for in this life or after you die. An indulgence is a way to lessen that penalty. Such as, if someone commits a crime, they are sentenced to jail time as punishment. They may be sorry for their crime and apologize, but they will still serve a sentence and suffer consequences for their crime. Receive a full indulgence (a plenary indulgence) by doing the following: • • • • Walk through the Holy Doors. Go to Confession. Receive Communion. Pray for the intentions of the Pope. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.” John 10:9 Pope John Paul II stated the Holy Door “evokes the passage from sin to grace which every Christian is called to accomplish.” Pope Francis wrote, “the Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons and instills hope.” The passing through the Door symbolizes an experience of conversion from the state of sin to the state of grace; an entrance into a new way of life. The door is Jesus Christ. PRAYER OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS FOR THE EXTRAORDINARY JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. CGP2016
