It all began with Rubesco, the iconic label of the Cantine Lungarotti winery, whose name derives
fromtheLatin“rubescere”,toblush.TodaytheUmbriangroup,guidedbyChiaraLungarotti(C.E.O.)
andhersisterTeresaSeverini,produces2.5millionbottleseachyearof27differentwinesexported
to 50 countries worldwide from 250 hectares of vineyards (between the Torgiano and Montefalco
estates),withanoverallturnoverof10.3millionEuros.
With these figures Cantine Lungarotti can be considered a true testimonial for the Umbrian land,
thanks to their integrated promotional system, of which they were forerunners, and a complete
productioncycleincludingagriculturalexploitation(oliveoilandbalsamiccondiment)butaboveall,
unique cultural and tourist activities. A case in point is the Lungarotti Foundation curated by the
founder’s wife, Maria Grazia, who founded the Lungarotti Wine Museum (MUVIT) of Torgiano
(Perugia), the “best in Italy” (source: New York Times) and the Olive and Oil Museum (MOO).
Hospitality is represented by Poggio alle Vigne Agritourism: 10 independent apartments and 2
independenthomeswithpool,setamongtheRubescovineyards.
A technical pit-stop is currently under way for Le Tre Vaselle Wine Resort which after 39 years of

The Lungarotti winery has its productive and historical headquarters in Torgiano where its iconic
wines are produced from the 230 hectares of vineyards owned by the family: the foremost is
undoubtedly Rubesco Rosso di Torgiano DOC which has been epitomizing Umbria’s winemaking

A wine that is enjoyed in 45 countries world-wide, this premium version of Rubesco undergoes an
agingperiodofabout5years,withaverageproductionofabout50,000bottles.

AnotherhistoricLungarottiwinehailsfromtheTorgianoestate:thewhiteTorrediGiano,Biancodi
TorgianoDOC.With300,000bottles(averageannualproduction)TorrediGianoisfreshandfruity,
produced exclusively with free-run juice. Lungarotti was also one of the pioneers of barriquefermentedand-agedwhites;indeed,asearlyasthe1970’stheyhavebeenproducingTorrediGiano
VignaIlPino,BiancodiTorgianoDOC(20,000bottlesannually).
Developedforayoungmarketandforallseasons,Brezzaisafreshandeasy-to-enjoywineperfectfor

Among the latest additions to the lineup are L’U Bianco (Umbria Bianco Igt - Vermentino and
Chardonnay) and L’U Rosso (Umbria Rosso Igt - Sangiovese, Merlot and other local red varietals

Thisisthevineyard whichproduces Lungarotti’s new entry for 2017. The wine, called ILBIO,isthe
firstLungarottiredwinefromorganicallygrowngrapestobereleasedintheItalianmarket(launch
duringVinitaly).Amedium-bodiedredwineformediumtolongaging,ILBIO(UmbriaRossoIGT2015)
isfermentedinstainlesssteelfor25dayswithskincontact,thenaged10monthincasksof30Hl,
followedby6monthsinbottle.Thecolourisintenseandbrilliantrubyred,whiletheflavoriselegant
withlovelynotesofredfruitandabalsamictouchandanagingpotentialofevenmorethan10years.

in a bain marie and aged for over10 years in casks of decreasing size made of 7 different types of
wood(oak,chestnut,cherry,ash,acacia,mulberryandjuniper)accordingtothetraditionalmethod
for balsamic vinegar. Its origin from grape must differentiates it from the traditional condiments
basedonwinevinegar.

TheculturalfulcrumoftheLungarottigroup,thatfor30yearshasbeenatthecentreofpromoting
the arts, knowledge and craftsmanship, is the Lungarotti Foundation, a non-profit organization
createdin1987byGiorgioandMariaGraziaLungarotti.
DirectedbyMariaGraziaMarchettiLungarotti,arthistorianandarchivist,theFoundationboastsa
busyagendaofconferences,meetingsandtheme-basedworkshopsandhaspublishedvariousworks,
recipientsofprestigious,eveninternational,awards.Amongitsactivitiesisalsothemanagementof
Lungarotti’s two major exhibition spaces in Torgiano, the Wine Museum and the Olive and Oil

Withacollectionofmorethan3,000works,theLungarottiWineMuseum(MUVIT)tellsthestoryof
viticultureintheMediterraneaninanunprecedentedmanner.Reviewedasthe“bestinItaly”bythe
New York Times, the Museum is a journey over five thousand years through collections of wine
vessels, cups, jugs, amphoras, a noteworthy collection of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque
ceramics up to the contemporary period, as well as ethnographic collections. The Museum
headquarterslocatedinPalazzoGraziani-BaglionialsohouseoneofthelargestcollectionsinEurope
ofengravingsonaBacchictheme,amongwhichisaninebriatingBacchanalbyPabloPicasso(1959),
and of antique wafer irons. The museum also displays vinification equipment, including the
monumentalpressdescribedbyCatonandusedintheUmbriancountrysideuntiljustafewdecades
ago.Openedtothepublicin1974,theMuseumcelebratedits40thanniversarywithspecialevents
and initiatives, including a Limited, Muvit edition wine label depicting one of its iconic pieces, the

The600-pluspiecesondisplayattheLungarottiOliveandOilMuseum(MOO)highlighttwouniversal
symbolsofMediterraneanculture.Apreciousproductthathasalsobeendefinedas“greengold”and
aconstantpresenceinthehistoryofmanfromantiquitytotoday:frommedicinetocommerce,from
theworshipofgodstocosmetologywhichinthe17thcenturyconsidereditasthemajoringredientin
therecipefortheelixiroflonglife.Amongtheworksondisplay:millstones,containers,cruetsandan
extraordinary collection of oil lamps that demonstrate oil’s original use as a source of light. In

one’s own roots. With an Agriculture degree and specialization in Viticulture, Chiara Lungarotti is an

closed,isabletorecognizeitssmellandflavour.SheisacouncilorofFederviniandUnioneItalianaVini,
anAcademicoftheAccademiaItalianadellaViteedelVinoandanAggregateAcademicofAccademiadei
Georgofili,aswellasacouncilorofFondazionePerugiaMusicaClassica.
Teresa Severini: daughter of Maria Grazia and her first husband and one of Italy’s first woman
winemakers.SheobtainedherdegreeinenologyattheUniversityofPerugiaandthenaspecializationat
theInstitutd’OenologieoftheUniversitédeBordeaux.In1979shebeganhercareerinthecompany.She
is one of the founding members of “Donne del Vino” and was one of the first women admitted to the
AcadémieInternationalduVininGenevain1981.
MariaGraziaMarchettiLungarotti:togetherwithherhusband,Giorgio,anddecadesbeforethetrends,
has created a unique system between viticulture, winemaking and the cultural and artistic world,
