Winter didn’t make much of an appearance this year, but I, for one, am
still grateful for the coming of Spring. The awakening of the earth
gives one a feeling of hope and inspiration for new beginnings.

Winter's Ending
© Jrlinson
The final throes of winter fade,
And life is again renewed.
The chilling bite of winter's blade is
Broken by spring's light dew.
Now light touches once again.
All things beautiful and green
While blossoms bloom with brilliant reds
And fragrant flowers make the scene.
Quiet brooks flow ever on
With melted snow as fuel
To quench the thirst of newborn fawn
And haste life's great renewal!

Our Member Spotlight in this issue features photographer Marvin Groves.
Marvin became a member of IWA in 2008 after a friend in Minnesota sent him an email. After seeing some
of Marvin’s images his friend asked if he was a IWA member... and said if not... he should be.
Marvin’s media is photography He is retired and spent his photographic career mostly with Lifetouch
Senior Portraits where he was the Production Manager for 28 years. He continues to provide some photo
workshops and several times a year provides a "Composition Class" for Jack's Camera Shop in Muncie,
Indiana. He loves to create images in Photoshop and does all of his own printing at home.
He attempts to "pay back" his good fortune by helping others in photography as much as possible. While
he enjoys all photography (He has done weddings, portraits, auto racing, sports, etc.), but he always comes
back to his love for wildlife.
Marvin says his recent trip to Africa has truly been a "wow" photographic opportunity. “Spending 12
hours a day with the camera "plastered" to my face photographing wildlife has been the most incredible
photo-adventure of my life.... I intend to return to Africa.” While in Africa, Marvin visited the Ngorongoro
Crater as well as the Serengeti and had an opportunity to photograph lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants,
giraffes and many more.
Marvin certainly has been on some very amazing trips. Last July he had the opportunity to board a
Russian Ice Breaker and travel North of Norway, well North of the Arctic Circle, within a few hundred
miles of the North Pole. While there he photographed seals and polar bears.
Thank you, Marvin for sharing your amazing adventures and your photos. Here are a few from his trips.

Social Media Exposure
A reminder that IWA now has an Instagram account. For those of you not familiar with Instagram it
works much like Facebook. And if you’re not familiar with Facebook, well you might want to get caught
up.
Instagram is a free app you can download to your phone or access online. The purpose of the Instagram
for our members is basically just to upload photos of your artwork and promote yourself. There is no
charge to do so. Just do a search for “indianawildlifeartists” to locate the account and view the photos
from our Annual Exhibit that are already there. If you wish to promote your artwork on Instagram, just
contact Jenny Smith at [email protected].
For the Love of Wildlife – Barn Owls & Falcons
I’m sure most of you have heard about, or have been watching with anticipation, April the giraffe and the
birth of her baby. Well it appears as if Indiana has somewhat of an Internet star of its own… barn owls.
The State DNR offers streaming video of this rare bird, offspring in nesting box. You can read more about,
and see the live streaming of barn owls in this article in the Indianapolis Star.
~Thanks to Diana Hunter for sharing this article.
If you’re a falcon fan (and I don’t mean the Atlanta Falcons football team) you might be interested in the
DNR’s falcon nest cam that keeps an eye on a pair of nesting falcons in downtown Indianapolis. Yes, right
in downtown, overlooking Monument Circle, on top of a 30-story building. Unfortunately, it isn’t
streaming video, but there are 2 cameras focused on the inside and outside of the nest box that refresh at
30/60 second intervals. You can view the Falcon Cam here.
The female falcon, named KathyQ, ruled the skies over downtown Indy and this nest box for an amazing
16 years. I work on the 25th floor of the building and have watched KathyQ and her mates for 16 years.
Each March I wait in anticipation for her new hatchlings to take turns learning how to fly. I have watched
her and her families land on the ledges outside my windows eating their lunch and posing for
photographs. I have even watched the young ones being banded by the DNR.
However, on March 23 a new female flew into town. KathyQ heroically tried to defend her territory but
was defeated by the new lady. Kathy Q lived a wonderful and prolific life during her reign in Indy. But
her legacy will live on. This new lady falcon has mated with her son and there are 4 eggs in the nest. I
will again watch in anticipation as the new generation soars past my windows. I hope Miss KathyQ is at
peace with the legacy she left behind. Read more about her story and the Indy Falcons in this article.

A Word from Our President . . .
“Art enables us to
find ourselves and
lose ourselves at the
same time.”
~Thomas Merton
Do you enjoy God’s wildlife even in the winter? Fortunately, I was able to go to Audubon’s
Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. You can read more about this sanctuary
at http://corkscrew.audubon.org/ Located about 45 minutes east of Naples, FL, it features
a 2.5-mile boardwalk with naturalists and volunteers. Although I visited it in January,
there were more birds to be seen when the water level dropped in March. Then all of the
birds and alligators seemed to congregate in 2 remaining (shrinking, as in drying up)
ponds. Often, I would see Ibis or egrets, but this time I saw a spoonbill, a wood stork, and
an anhinga, as well as alligators. Going there often gives me some good photographs for the
annual IWA exhibit.
I hope all of you are looking forward to the annual exhibit on Saturday, August 26,
2017. Also, do not forget to visit the Flora and Fauna Exhibit at Hartford City,
Indiana, from May 1 to June 2, 2017.
