Tailor Birds is a rare Australian sound and visual collaboration between European artist/s (insert name here), Australian techno-­‐violinist Sophia Kinston, singer/songwriter, Monique Kerr (Australia) and electronic musician/producer, Rick van der Ree (based in Holland). Combining the new with the old, contemporary sound with classical principals, this unique arts show promises to be an extravagant neo-­‐classical experience. Incorporating electronic elements, video and various dramatic devices Tailor Birds will gently and vicariously immerse its audiences in a new wave of musical experiences. Drawing from an unusual set of instruments Tailor Birds band members successfully craft a symbiosis between old and new music -­‐ ultimately founding a signature neo –classical free form work. Tailor Birds is lead by composer and techno-­‐violinist Sophia Kinston who weaves together electric violin, electronic beats, dynamic vocal work and live animation of folly objects, transforming sound sources into unusually creative sound scores. Accompanied by visceral projection screenings, audiences can become completely immersed inside a visual and aural exploration. Sophia is successful in crafting a symbiosis between old and new, vicariously immersing audiences in a signature neo-­‐classical musical style. This is known as Tailor Birds. Event D etails

A bout the M usicians
Sophia Kinston is a contemporary composer in the full sense of the word, arranging diverse elements to form a hybrid landscape of neo-­‐classical electronic sound and visuals. Sophia has a long-­‐standing interest and history working in collaboration with diverse and high profile artists and bringing a range of international influences to her work. Sophia’s key influences include: Kronos Quartet as well as her three key tutors: Yumi Sasaki, Jacob Plooij, Miki Tsunoda. Sophia has spent her summers at music camps and visits to the Venice Biennale and various festivals. In Australia, at VCA performed various Australian composers' works, including commissioning a new piece from Anthony Lyons who's now a member of the teaching staff at the Melbourne Conservatorium of music. Local Guest Artist: x-­‐x-­‐x (enter paragraph here) Rick van der Ree, producer for tailor birds, is based in Amsterdam, Holland. Producer for Dutch band, Kid Totem, as well as producing much of his own electronic work, under the name ElectRick. He has played a number of Holland based festivals and venues, such as Landjuweel, adm tijd, Ekko Utrecht, and Paradiso Amsterdam, and has been working with Sophia Kinston over the past 5 years on building the production side of Tailor Birds, resulting in her debut album, ‘Runaway Sailors, Stay At Home Wives’. Monique Kerr, singer/songwriter, and vocalist for Tailor Birds, is based just outside of Melbourne, Australia. With her album release, Golden Blue (2009), she has since been awarded the 2009 Australian VET student of the year (music industry). Touring her solo work in 2012 through Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide, she has since toured with Tailor Birds in 2013 in Europe. She has a range of management experience including with the Fringe Music Project, and for Blank Tape Music, under César Rodrigues (Blue King Brown). Education is VET cert 3 music industry, and is currently studying a degree in music industry at RMIT, city campus. Erika Kertesz, is one such guest musician that Sophia Kinston has worked with in Europe. She recorded the vocals for the title track of Tailor Birds’ debut album, ‘Runaway Sailors, Stay At Home Wives’ amongst other tracks. Originally from Hungary, and a musician in her own right, she has completed a number of self-­‐managed and funded tours over the past 10 years. The album ‘Little Girl’, released by Warner Music Hungary, includes 13 original tracks, and she has since toured this album, alongside a larger jazz band, but also touring with a smaller 2-­‐piece over the past couple of years. Performing at prestigious venues and music festivals such as: Budapest Jazz Club, Sziget Festival, Reigen Jazz Club, Tunnel Jazz Club, Reduta Jazz Club, Blue Note Jazz Club, MOL Jazz Festival 2010, Vienna Jazz Festival 2011, Liburnia Jazz Festival 2011, amongst others. Timothy Clarke, tour manager for Tailor Birds’ 2014 summer tour, has a history of work within administration. This has included a number of jobs where he has had to work within systems and timeframes. He is currently working for the Melbourne University, monitoring and evaluating applications, in the arts sector. He works well under strict timeframes, achieving goals, working well within the team, but also maintaining professionalism and efficiency, and a leadership role. He has also worked for Tailor Birds in Australia, helping with merchandise and door sales. In their ’14 Europe tour, Timothy will be in charge of door and ticket sales, monitoring and control of merchandise, keeping of records of sales, he will be providing weekly feedback on this, and keeping control of all receipts and earnings from ticket and merch sales, to keep a strong awareness of all finances.
