We have several mornings lined up to practice for the 5th grade promotion ceremony this week and next: 5/5, 5/8, 5/10, and 5/15. Reading/Writing: We will concentrate on finishing up our guided reading books and continue working on our summary projects due next Friday (5/12). We will complete our unit on the discovery of Latin & Greek root words & meanings. We also have several grammar lessons to check off, such as: using commas with introductory clauses, when to use italics, and apostrophe usage with singular/plural possessive nouns. Math: Our focus is on volume and geometry this week. Applying dimensional concepts (math formulas) to both shapes and rectangular prisms, proving that area is 2D (length x width = base) and volume is 3D (length x width x height or base x height). We will also begin a short project to apply these concepts. Social Studies: Students are wrapping up a packet over the Civil War and post-war Reconstruction before beginning Chapter 16 over the "Changing West." Your student took their final Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) for the year, and will also take the end-of-year iReady diagnostic in ELA on Thursday morning. 2
