Imagine a place that perfectly combines the fascination of a rich history with the attraction of stunning natural beauty.
There is probably no other town in Norway that so completely meets those requirements as Fredrikstad. Because only Fredrikstad
is situated at the estuary of Norway´s largest river. The lively downtown restaurants along the quayside have a great city pulse,
but if it is ancient history and quaint streets you long for , The Fortified Town (Gamlebyen) is a short ferry ride away.
This part of Fredrikstad is Northern Europe’s best preserved fortified town. Outside Fredrikstad, you will find the Hvaler Islands.
Hvaler consists of 833 islands, islets and skerries, a coastal eldorado just waiting to be discovered.
Attractions/excursions
Gamlebyen, the oldest fortified town
in Scandinavia, is thriving with history
and atmosphere.
- The Fortified Town
Of many extraordinary facts about the Fortified
Town, none is more surprising than this apparent
contradiction: It is one of Norway´s most popular
tourist attractions, yet always quiet and sleepy!
How is this possible? Guided walking tours in the
Fortified Town.
New attraction in the Fortified Town!
“The Fortified Town Model Train Centre” opened
on the 5th of September 2010, by the County
Mayor Ole Haabeth and the Fredrikstad Big band.
The new Model Train Centre has 3700 m
of tracks, 110 locomotives, 600 railway carriages,
3000 buildings and 10 000 trees – all situated in
an exiting scenery of both urban and rural areas
including features such as mountains and
waterfalls. Computer engineers, electricians and
architects have all worked on this project.
The centre is the largest of its kind in Northern
Europe.
The adventure path from Fredrikstad to Hvaler and
Outer Hvaler National Park
This fantastic Outer Oslofjord road extends from island
to island and ends up at the small and lively harbour
Skjærhalden. You will experience great colours beyond
the Puttesund bridge where sky and ocean blend
beautifully and the maroon colour of the rocks creates
the perfect frame. (On one of the islands you will find a
community of trolls and sea trolls.) They have been
here since the ice melted and the country was
discovered, living off hunting and fishing. We will also
visit the Coastal Museum and experience how life was
in the old days.
The road winds further and combines art and culture
and ends up at King Neptune Throne at Skjærhalden.
We will meet King Neptune and visit the National Park
Centre and return by either boat or bus.
Outer Hvaler National Park
Unique landscape above and below sea level
The Hvaler – Fredrikstad archipelago boasts a rich
diversity of species both on land and below sea level.
The area is also attractive for outdoor pursuits typically
linked with the coast. Most people enjoy it as a
summer paradise, but its scenery and natural history
also have much to offer the rest of the year.
Most of the national park is below sea level and ranges
from depths of 470 m to shallows where skerries
pierce the surface on the Søsterøyene and Struten.
Europe’s largest coastal coral reef is to be found near
Tisler. The National Park Centre is located at
Skjærhalden. The park is one of Norway’s 15 National
Parks and the first Norwegian maritime park.
The centre is open to everyone who wants more
information about the surroundings and the amazing
nature in the area. At the centre, you will find:
Exhibitions, Slideshows, the Lilleputt Centre, with an
outdoor aquarium, Presentations (on request).

First at both poles
The greatest polar explorer in history, Roald
Amundsen, was born in Fredrikstad. His South Pole
expedition in 1911 has been compared to
Neil Armstrong´s moon landing, the two great
achievements of the last century that demanded the
utmost of endurance, leadership, ability and
technology. In 2011 it is 100 years since Roald
Amundsen led the first Antarctic expedition to reach
the South Pole. Guided tours by bus to his
birthplace.
The Solberg Tower
- the new gateway to the county of Østfold heritage
The Solberg Tower stands as a fitting gateway to
this proud heritage, and the visitor will leave here
better informed, with a sense of wonder, and a wish
to explore further. It has been designed as a
“living” meeting point which can serve as a centre
for activities. Cultural heritage is integrated into
the architecture and artistic expression.
The tower has a lift to the panorama platform and
accessibility has been imperative when designing
the tower. At the peak of the Bronze Age the priests
and rock-carvers of Begby transformed granite
faces into tableaux depicting the journey of the soul
to the sun and the stars. The ancient bronzesmiths
of Hunn transfomed metal ore into ritual swords
and axes.
