Hello Everyone!
The bulls seemed to be the main attraction this week – one of the charolais bulls needed doctoring for
foot rot (an infected cut between his toes). The bull managed to slip out of his
is initial head loop leaving
only a front foot caught by Hal, and after a few shots in tall grass, and downed logs, Brianna caught two
heels only to have him hop over another log and step one foot out. With Hal having a front right foot
caught and Brianna a left hind foot, the challenge of getting a 1400 lb. bull to lay down was on. Ahhh,
but our quick thinking handy dandy MacG
MacGyver like cowboy Hal with his Leatherman
eatherman tool, two paper
clips, and a rubber band… just kidding
kidding…came
came up with continually flipping big loops around the whole
bull and tightening the loops as th
they slipped down around the bull’s legs.. All was done rather quietly
and when the bull finally laid down, the tangle of ropes was impressive! Fortunately he remained quiet
with Hal’s and Brianna’ss calm steadiness, and Hal managed to get all the ropes in their proper places
p
and the bull doctored.
On Friday the red bull above gave Hal and his crew a hard time; they tried to get him over to a bunch of
cows where he should be, but I believe he
he’ss had enough of them! All the nagging and “honeydo’s”, he’s
now content
nt to lay in the shade by himself! After much circling in the bushes, the cowboys and a
cowgirl decided to leave him for another day.
After a couple of days of no wolf sign and contented cattle, we thought maybe they’d
the
moved on.
However after findingg a small batch of cattle tucked away in a small draw on a sidehill yesterday with
wolf tracks in their vicinity, we are again on alert this weekend.
The group this week enjoyed fantastic weather, cattle drives, cattle
doctoring, wildlife on cue, horseman
horsemanship this week using no reins,
only a neck rope, cattle working, roping, and even a “Princess”
Ride!
We even got all the haying finished!
That’s a big relief!
We want to wish our littlest Buckaroo,
Joey, a terrific school year. After
spending the summer with us, we’ve all
adopted him into the ranch crew. He’s
become quite the hand around the ranch
and with the horses. His dad got to ride
with him yesterday and couldn’t believe the progress and confidence
he’s gained. We’re all very proud of you Joey! I’m setting your radio aside for only you to use next
summer.
Well we’re all going to wrap up early today if we can and enjoy this sunshine we are getting. Have a
great weekend!
