Media release 27 June 2012 DRAFT BSCA Hill Climb and Track Championships 2012 Eight riders from the Jersey Cycling Association Youth Academy competed in the British School Cycling Association (BSCA) National Hill Climb and Track Championships, riding against cyclists from all over the UK and the Southern Region: with two of their number, Rhys Pilley and Adele Maher, securing podium places. The BSCA National Hill Climb Championship is held at Ditcham Park School, on the South Downs, where riders in the U13 age group have to tackle a demanding 2.2 mile course: a steep technical climb is followed by a long section of road with varying gradients, which makes the pacing of effort very challenging, particularly into a headwind. Riding in his first BSCA event, Rhys Pilley, from Victoria College, produced an extremely strong ride to take second place in a time of 10:32, just four seconds off the winning time. Youth Academy riders Luc Monpetit-Le Brun, also of Victoria College, and Tom Lumborg of De la Salle, both produced competitive rides in the same category to finish 11th and 14th respectively, in times of 12:08 and 12:21. Grouville School’s Adele Maher produced the first of two fine medal-winning performances over the weekend in the girls U11 class, by taking a bronze medal in the hill climb, with a time of 4:21. Younger riders were faced with a shorter course featuring a steep start, where good technique and strength were needed, before riders could push on along a rising drag to the finish. Aimee Hugh, from First Tower School, rode superbly in her first event in the UK to finish sixth. In the U9 boys’ category, Youth Academy riders Malo Monpetit-Le Brun, from Mont Nicolle School, narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing in an excellent fourth place after a strong ride with a solid start. Zac Hamon, from De la Salle, secured a top 10 placing, finishing ninth, with a good time of 4:45. The BSCA National Hard Track Championship was held at Portsmouth’s Mountbatten Centre where all of the young Jersey riders gained their first experience of riding on a purpose-built 500m cycle track, complete with banked bends. The U13 boys also faced the additional challenge of riding fixed wheel track bikes competitively for the first time. All of the Youth Academy riders performed incredibly well, given their lack of experience in track riding, and rode competitively throughout the day. The Hard Track Championship is an omnium event where riders compete in a series of races – including a pursuit, a sprint and a massed start scratch race – gaining points which contribute to an overall total. Ride of the day on the track belonged to Adele Maher who rode a brilliant scratch race, against some very strong opposition, to finish third. Over a five lap race, Adele positioned herself superbly in a chasing bunch of four riders and moved to the front on the back straight of the last lap where she held her position around the bend before kicking for the line and riding away from challengers in the sprint. This placing, together with another 3 rd-placed finish in the pursuit event, put Adele in the third place overall for her second bronze medal of the weekend, representing a fantastic achievement. Aimee Hugh also rode in this class where she competed well throughout finishing in eighth place overall. All of the U9 boys raced well and Malo Monpetit-Le Brun placed 6th, Zackary Hamon 8th and Daniel Roderick 10th in their class. Malo Monpetit-Le Brun rode particularly strongly in the sprint heats where he qualified for the semifinal only to miss out narrowly on making it through to the final. The U13 Jersey boys probably learned most from their day of competitive track racing where they had to contend with the novelty of racing fixed wheel bikes against boys who had the advantage of practicing this discipline regularly on their own home track venues, where the tactics of track racing can be refined. Despite this, the JCAYA riders held their own and competed strongly, particularly in the pursuit event, and also in the scratch race where it was Jersey rider, Rhys Pilley, who launched an attack to lead the bunch into the penultimate lap of a 10 lap race. The JCAYA would like to thank its principal sponsor Moore for its continued support to enable Jersey youngsters to gain experience of competitive bike racing in the UK. The Academy would also like to thank Big Maggy’s Coffee and Bike Store for the loan of a fixed wheel bike which enabled the U13 boys to participate in the track event.
