Cliffs Residents Outreach volunteers contracted with the university to use the long-vacant store, at no cost, to store and pack foods for schoolchildren and families. “Education is the key to unlock the golden door to freedom.” – George Washington Carver A year ago, Carrie Didlake landed her dream job. Not a corner office for a Fortune 500 company. Not a high-profile position in the community. No, in fact, she’s rarely seen at all by the people who count on her the most. Carrie is the executive director of Cliffs Resident Outreach (CRO), a nonprofit group formed by residents of The Cliffs at Glassy and The Cliffs Valley communities with a laser-sharp mission: to empower children to learn by removing obstacles that hinder their education. CRO works behind the scenes with a handful of local public elementary school administrators to provide a safety net of life-saving resources to the least fortunate children in their classrooms and their families. “We know that education is the best way out of inter-generational poverty,” Carrie explains, “and when the family suffers, the child’s ability to learn and get a quality education declines. By serving the child, we serve the whole family.” A lot of agencies help families meet their basic needs. CRO, however, steps in after those resources have been exhausted. Officials with participating schools work with teachers to identify students with serious – often grave – home lives or personal situations and contact CRO when these kids are at a critical juncture of need. “CRO makes sure that these children don’t fall through the cracks in our society. These families are very dignified and proud, as we all would be, and very reluctant to take hand-outs from organizations. We usually don’t even know the identity of the children we’re helping,” Carrie adds. Case-in-point. A second grader at Tigerville Elementary had a family crisis when a sibling was critically injured while riding a go-cart. The student and his mother slept each night at the hospital. The mother had to quit her job to stay with her child in the hospital, waking up each morning in Greenville and driving to Tigerville Elementary and back – and then up and back again each afternoon – so that the student could still continue attending school. CRO was contacted, and volunteers raised $1,000 to help pay the family’s bills for the month, so that the mother could care for her children. Indeed, November 1, 2007 (CRO’s first day in existence), the organization received a call about a fourth grader in a nearby school whose home was Nonperishable items once again line the shelves at the Wood Store, where volunteers plan and pack meals for families to deliver to schools on Fridays. 4 | The Cliffs Lifestyle getting ready to be seized in foreclosure. The family was in such dire straits financially that the student was selecting fewer food items at lunch to try to reduce costs. CRO paid the family’s mortgage payment for that month, giving the student’s single mother, who had been injured on the job, a chance to get back on her feet with her expenses. In short, they bridged the gap and helped a mom make the ends meet to provide for her family again. “We want to do that same kind of thing for hundreds of children,” Carrie says. “We want to move things out of their way, like whether their parents can pay the mortgage. Our philosophy is to never say no – to always find a way to say yes.” In addition to crisis situations like the ones above, CRO offers two programs during the school year to combat hunger, one of the most well-documented obstacles to learning in the classroom. Because many children go to school without eating breakfast, CRO’s “Healthy Snack Program” provides select children a mid-morning, healthy snack that meets Zest Quest’s guidelines for optimal nutrition (low sugar, with low salt and no trans fats). Additionally, for the neediest families, CRO’s “Backpacks” program packs a two-day supply of food for each family member, that these students take home on Friday afternoons to get them and their families through the weekend. Thanks to this effort, these children show less erratic behavior on Mondays that school administrators and their teachers attribute largely to malnutrition. This summer, when school is out, CRO continues providing backpacks to these families each weekend. Currently, CRO is made up of Carrie and 45 volunteers who are residents of The Cliffs at Glassy and The Cliffs Valley communities. Next school year, CRO will expand to include an elementary school near Lake Keowee, and residents of The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards and Keowee Falls can participate. The organization is funded through support from the Members’ purchases of Preferred Guest Golf Passes and also from Jim Anthony, founder and president of The Cliffs Communities, and The Cliffs Communities’ Foundation, but the most support comes in the form of the outpouring of genuine care exuded by The Cliffs’ resident volunteers. “What inspires me is the breadth of quality talent found in The Cliffs’ residents giving their time. I have never seen a Board of Directors as committed and hard working as those who serve at CRO. They are deeply committed to these children. For a non-profit executive director, this is the best world there is… this is going to be a huge boost to these kids and, I believe, will end up being a model," said Didlake. Meditation and relaxation techniques can increase our wellbeing through the mind-body connection. In other words, we can use our minds to create real physiological changes in our bodies. Dr. Herbert Benson of Harvard Medical School and Mind Body Medical Institute pioneered research to support the credibility of these methods through his 1975 book The Relaxation Response. “The relaxation response is a physical state of deep rest that changes the physical and emotional responses to stress... and the opposite of the fight or flight response." - Herbert Benson, MD. www.relaxationresponse.org Dr. Benson’s research proved that meditation contributed to positive changes in metabolism, heart rate, respiration, blood pressure and brain chemistry. Meditation does not have to involve complicated procedures. Follow Dr. Benson’s six simple steps to elicit the relaxation response: 1. Sit quietly in a comfortable position. 2. Close your eyes. 3. Deeply relax all your muscles, beginning at your feet and progressing up to your face. Keep them relaxed. 4. Breathe through your nose. Become aware of your breathing. As you breathe out, say a word or short phrase, and repeat as you breathe in. 5. Continue for 10 to 20 minutes. 6. Do not worry about whether you are successful. Maintain a passive attitude and permit relaxation to occur at its own pace. Skin Health Summer has arrived and so has the risk of over exposure. Your skin is the largest organ of your body, so make its health your top Wellness goal this season. The following tips will help you choose a sunscreen that should do the job: • Pick a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against UV-A and UV-B rays and has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. • Read product labels. Look for a waterproof brand if you will be sweating or swimming. Buy a non-stinging product or one specifically formulated for your face. • Buy a brand that does not contain para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) if you are sensitive to that ingredient. • Choose a sun block that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, both include compounds that block almost the entire spectrum of the sun’s damaging rays without causing irritation. Once only available in chalky white, it now comes in colorless forms. • Try a sunscreen with different chemicals if your skin reacts badly to the one that you are using. Not all sunscreens have the same ingredients. • Use a water-based sunscreen for oily skin or if you are prone to acne. • Be aware that more expensive does not mean better. Although a costly brand might feel or smell better, it is not necessarily more effective than a cheaper product. • Be aware of the expiration date. Some sunscreen ingredients might degrade over time. Member Wellness Challenge Update Wellness Challenge participants receive one wellness point for every day that they spend 15 minutes on meditation, breathing, or relaxation techniques. This month’s prize will be two one-hour massages. Earn 100 points for attending The Power of Mind/Body Connection lecture on Tuesday, July 15, at Keowee Vineyards Lakehouse, or by watching the video. Golf to a Latin Bea By Dale Spiess, Keowee Falls Member Travel arranged by The Cliffs Travel Concierge 14 | The Cliffs Lifestyle at According to US golf stars such as Craig Stadler and Tom Watson, Argentina is a golfer's paradise. This remarkably diverse country has a strong golfing tradition and history that goes back more than a century. Keowee Falls Member Dale Spiess and family discovered spectacular scenery and exceptional value exploring golf in the land of the gauchos. Our trip was planned to be golf first and everything else second. It turned out to be an excellent balance of golf, sightseeing, history lessons coupled with great food and wine. My son Brad Spiess and two sons-in-law, John Ritter and Jerome Scott, first thought we would put together a trip to Scotland or Ireland but then read that many of the tour pros have been going to Argentina for their getaways. If it’s good enough for them, it should be good enough for us plus it would be a new destination for all of us. Argentina turned out to be beautiful and all that we hoped for in golf. We spent five days in Buenos Aires playing five of the oldest and best courses in the country – The San Andres Golf Club, the Jockey Club, Olivos Golf Club and Buenos Aires Golf Club. Our Patagonia Golf Guide, Virginia Moran, took us through the historic areas showing us the “Pink House” where Evita gave her historic farewell to her followers, the capital buildings and churches. A graduate of Buenos Aires University graduate and history teacher, Virginia offered us a unique glimpse into Argentina’s history, architecture and culture. La Boca, known for its multi-colored houses, featured tango dancers in the streets along with great bargains on leather goods and art from local craftsmen. The restaurants were exceptional featuring great beef and local wines. From Buenos Aires we flew about two hours to Bariloche, located in Argentine Patagonia. Again, three rounds of golf in three days. There were long but beautiful drives through the Seven Lakes region that is as amazing as our Rocky Mountains. The golf there was incredible. Chapelco Country Club, a Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, was the most challenging and picturesque of the trip. Llao Llao Golf Club and Arelauquen Golf Club were both set into the valley with lake and mountain views. The only thing we missed with our heavy golf schedule was taking the opportunity to fish some of the many lakes and streams. We met several fishing groups that told of 30-pound trout and plenty of them (fishermen have been known to stretch the truth). The next time we’ll take the time to check out their stories. For a stunning finale to your South American golf vacation, The Cliffs Travel Concierge can arrange for a private transfer from Bariloche to The Cliffs Preserve at Patagonia. Enjoy The Preserve’s luxurious accommodations, Chef Pablo Gonzales' inventive cuisine and renowned Chilean wine, along with guided hiking, whale watching, sport fishing, rafting and amazing wildlife excursions. 866-400-9453 ext. 217 | [email protected] The Cliffs Lifestyle | 15 Demo Days Th e C l i f f s C l u b Fi t t i n g At The Cliffs Club Demo Days, state-of-the-art fitting techniques will help you find the perfect set of clubs customized to your needs. From a distance of 78 yards, As golf rounds increase, I want to remind you of some quick practices that will assist with turf maintenance and make your round more enjoyable. As mentioned in the May Lifestyle, ball mark repair is crucial and often overlooked by many golfers. This is generally the most complained-about areas regarding the putting surface. Each player should repair his or her mark and one other mark when entering the putting surface. Another area in course etiquette is the replacement of turf divots. The general rule is if the divot is bigger than your foot, you should return the divot; if smaller, fill it with sand. The purpose of sand is to provide a firm foundation when the turf grows back. When filling the divot, make sure the sand is not mounded. This diminishes the quality of cut when mowers run over the sand mound. nesses were Tad Deneszczuk and Dean Waldenberger. Way to go, Barrie! Though one should never underestimate the importance of good pre-swing fundamentals, the transition at the completion of the back swing and the beginning of the forward swing is where the separation from an advanced player and a novice is most noticeable. In a model swing, the downswing is initiated by the entire body rotating and shifting toward the target with the trailing shoulder delivering the trail- ing elbow to the trailing hip. Famed instructor Harvey Penick references this action as "The Magic Move" because this is the most elusive and treasured move in all of golf. Done properly, this action maintains the clubhead on plane or very close to the plane. A golf swing with incorrect plane will force a golfer to manipulate the clubface at impact to keep a golf shot on-target. Try to transition to a better game, and work on the magic move. By keeping the club onplane you will find more efficiency in your game, and your shot making ability more effective. ness. Well done, Bill!
