The Depth Chargers unloaded the
ammunition and sank Johnny’s Lawn
Care, 19-5, in the final regular season game in the B Division of the
Scotch Plains Softball League at
Brookside Park in Scotch Plains on
July 20. Explosive experts Brian
Wanat, Mick Musano and Paul
Ciccotti detonated four hits apiece to
lead the annihilation.
Trying to find the range, the Depth
Chargers scored two runs in the top
of the first inning. Guy Buoncane
reached first safely on an error, Wanat
walked, Musano lofted an RBI sacrifice fly and Larry Marsella followed
suit with an RBI sacrifice fly.
Another run was added in the second by the Depth Chargers when
Buoncane and Wanat both singled
and Musano lofted another RBI sacrifice fly. After squashing Johnny’s
batters in the second, the Depth
Chargers found their target three
times in the third to take a 6-0 lead.
Ciccotti chopped a double up-themiddle, Mike Lembo drizzled an RBI
single to left, Phil Blancato blasted
an RBI triple to right, then Wanat
whacked an RBI single to center.
Johnny’s Lawn Care fired back with
a run in the bottom of the third. Bob
Pielhau punched a single to center and
Hank McMorrian smashed an RBI
double to right but was thrown out
attempting to stretch his hit to a triple.
Charger Kevin Milliman stepped
to the plate in the top of the fifth and
looped a double to left, then advanced
to third when the ball was mishandled. Buoncane sailed an RBI
sacrifice fly to left. Wanat followed
with a single to left then flew to
second on a throw. Musano skid a
grounder between the second

Joe Dasti was devastating as he
went 4-for-4, including two doubles,
and scored four runs to lead Marian
Avenue past Montrose Avenue, 9-7,
in Fanwood Old Men’s Softball Association action at La Grande Park in
Fanwood on July 21. Marian slugger
Bill Mariani, who also had four hits,
launched a two-run home run to cap
a four-run gush in the third inning
and totaled five RBI.
Dasti wasted no time in the top of
the first as he beat out an infield
single, stole second, then darted to
third on an errant throw from the
catcher. Mariani hacked an RBI

single, then a brilliant second-tofirst double play initiated by Montrose
shortstop Jack Sullivan held Marian
to one run.
In the bottom of the inning, Rob
Shuten bounced a single past short
and Dave Heintzelmann hammered
a ground rule double into the net in
left-center. Sullivan put Montrose
ahead, 2-1, when he pounded a tworun double to center.
Montrose boosted its lead to 4-1 in
the bottom of the second. John
Swisher laid down a perfect bunt
single, Bill Swisher hopped a single
to left, then Shuten chopped a tworun single past third.
Marian’s gush came in the third.
Chris Lynch walked and Dasti looped
an RBI single to right then moved to
second on the throw home. Danny
Mondelli scribbled an RBI single
past first, then Mariani gave Marian
a 5-4 lead with his two-run homer
into the playground in left.
A great diving grab of a grounder
by second baseman Mondelli to record
the out and a leaping snag of a liner by
Dasti at short, quelled any thought of
a Montrose scoring threat in the third.
With Fred Ungeretti on first, Paul
Arrigo slapped a single to left, then

Clockwork Orange amassed 28 hits
to throw off the timing of the C. B. I. Big
Blue Machine and ticked away with an
18-10 victory in Jewish Community
Center (JCC) Softball League action at
Tamaques Park in Westfield on July 25.
Despite the clocking, C. B. I. slugger
Jeff Mayerson crushed a grand slam
home run, a three-run homer, two singles
and totaled eight RBI.
The Big Blue Machine sputtered
in the top of the first despite singles
from Glenn Frank and Mayerson,
but the Clockwork Orange men
banged out four runs in the bottom of
the inning. Andy Novick ripped a
double past third, Ed Bartosik

St. Joseph Keeps Hammering Away;

Matt Fugett drilled a two-run home
run in the fourth inning to give his
team all the runs it needed, but St.
Joseph kept hammering away and
nailed the leaderless St. James
“Gang”, 15-6, in a St. Bartholomew’s
Oldtimers Softball League game at
Brookside Park in Scotch Plains on
July 22.
Carpenter Dave Rothenberg continued rolling offensively as he rocked
three hits, including a triple, and
drove in four runs.
Despite the absence of “Gang” lead-

ers Jim and Matt Hoezel, St. James
got off to a quick start, scoring three
runs in the top of the first.
Darryl Eaton and Ed Belford both
singled, then Terry Gallagher yanked
an RBI single to left. Stan Lesnewski
ricocheted an RBI single off the
shortstop’s glove and Dennis Hercel
bounced an RBI single past short.
Still wary of the “Gang’s” vicious
reputation, St. Joseph cautiously
scored a run in its half of the inning.
Ed Marchelitis scampered around
first toward second on an error, alertly
darted to third on a grounder to third,
then scored on Rothenberg’s slow
roller to the pitcher.
The James “Gang” answered with
a run in the third to take a 4-1 lead.
Belford belted a triple to the fence in
right, then deftly scored on
Gallagher’s grounder to third.
St. Joseph banged loudly at the
“Gang” hideaway with four in the
bottom of the inning. Howard Jones
hacked a single past the second
baseman and Al Weber whacked a
single to left. Marc DiFrancesco slid
an RBI single to right, then
Rothenberg rumbled the right field
fence with a two-run triple. Frank
Pepe gave St. Joseph a 5-4 lead with
bounced an RBI single to right and
Dave Sanders slapped an RBI single
to center. Curt Rubin’s single created
an error in center that allowed another run and Dave Baer belted an
RBI single to right.
The Orange men took a 6-0 lead in
the second. John Zdatny sliced a
double to right, Norm Grunberg
curved an RBI single to right and
Brian Shlissel spanked an RBI single
to center.
C. B. I. timidly scored its first run
in the third. Gerry Kirschenbaum
lobbed a single over second, Howie
Queller bopped a single to center and
Mayerson poked an RBI single to
center. The Clock men matched that
run in their portion of the inning
his RBI grounder to the pitcher.
The “Gang” felt the absence of its
leaders when they failed to score in
the fourth and St. Joseph answered
with two runs in its half of the inning.
Bob Brennan dribbled an infield
single, then Fugett stepped up and
blasted his two-run homer to right.
With a degree of timidity Gang
members Tom Ulichny and Eaton
both looped little singles in the fifth.
Ulichny then tagged up on a fly ball
to right and scored on an errant throw.

Steve Schwartz got the ball rolling
for C. B. I. in the fifth with an infield
single. Kirschenbaum keenly placed
a single past second and Queller
looped a single over second to load
the bases. Mayerson strutted to the
plate and hammered his grand slam
homer to the furthest reaches of left
field, making the score, 7-5.
Not deterred, Clockwork Orange
immediately answered with three
runs. Sanders smashed a double to
center, Rubin rapped a single to center and Baer wiggled a single up-themiddle. Robin Cherkes hit an RBI
sacrifice fly to left, Zdatny singled,
then Grunberg hooked an RBI single
over third. Shlissel concluded the
scoring with an RBI sacrifice to right.
Due to Cherkes’ circus catches at
first, C. B. I. failed to score in the
sixth, then the Orange men pushed
their lead to 12-5 with two runs in the
sixth. Ken Moskowitz chopped a
single past short and Sanders followed with a single past third. Baer
bashed an RBI single over first, then
Cherkes’ infield grounder brought
Sanders in to score.
Big Blue temporarily stopped the
Clock men with four in the seventh,
tightening the score to 12-9. Dan
Goldstein slashed a single to right
and dashed to second on a miscue.
Kirschenbaum knocked an RBI
single to right and Queller zapped a
single to center. Up came Mayerson.
This time he launched a three-run
homer to remote right which nearly
alit in Garwood.
Clockwork Orange sounded the
alarm and rang off six runs in its half
of the inning, sending C. B. I. a clear
