Connecting 30 November - 6 December 2014 Volume 7 Issue 44 Advent 1 65 Years of the Christmas Bowl Appeal Welcome… to Sunday morning at Manning Uniting Church. We have an All Age worship service in the church, followed by Community Time in the auditorium. The mainspring of our vision is connecting. We look forward to connecting and sharing with you over a cuppa during our community time. You may like to check out our website: www.manning.unitingchurch.org.au Since Christmas day in 1949, when Rev Frank Byatt of Victoria placed an empty bowl on the dinner table and asked those present to give what they considered to be the cost of the meal to help refugees fleeing World War II, Australian churches have been coming together at Christmas time to bring relief and hope to people devastated by conflict and disaster. Today the Christmas Bowl appeal is an ecumenical tradition, with more than 2,000 churches from 19 denominations coming together to share God’s gift of love and hope with people around the world who need it most. Together we came to the aid of those starving during the 1985 Ethopian famine. We gave comfort to people devastated by the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. For the first time since World War II, the number of refugees, WORSHIP TODAY asylum seekers and internally displaced people worldwide has 10.30am SUNDAY November 30 exceeded 50 million. Sadly, this shows us that the Christmas Bowl is needed as much today as it ever has been, and remains a vital link between those who have enough and those who are less fortunate. More information about the projects the appeal supports will be provided in the coming weeks. Connecting, Gathering, Growing, Giving....... Congregation News GIVE HOPE CHRISTMAS CARDS to end child detention Following Synod, I shared with you that the next phase of the Give Hope Campaign would be the production of some Christmas Cards featuring some of the banners that were produced early in the campaign. Church members are encouraged to consider using these cards and sending one to the Prime Minister and to their local Member of Parliament. The campaign is hoping to send the Prime Minister 10,000 Christmas cards. “We want Mr Abbott to hear the voices of Uniting Church members praying for all children to be released from detention.” We have received 40 Christmas cards addressed to the Prime Minister with an invitation for members to sign these and send the cards back to the Campaign in a reply-paid envelope. They will be sent all at once so it can be seen how many people in our church care deeply enough about this issue to take action. Two advocacy briefs are also available: “Children in Detention” and “The Proposed Amendments to Migration and Maritime Powers Legislation”. The cards and briefs will be available following the service for members to look at, and they will then be placed on the noticeboard. There will be an opportunity for those who wish to sign cards to do so after church on the next two Sundays.
