Fairfield County also had its own historic preservation movement, initiated by a group of seven influential women who championed the restoration of historic buildings. We are still learning from their example today. KEYNOTE SPEAKER: NAOMI TUTU “Celebrate Women: Making a Difference Globally” The challenges of growing up black and female in apartheid South Africa have been the foundation of Nontombi Naomi Tutu’s life as an activist for human rights. Those experiences taught her that our whole human family loses when we accept situations of oppression, and how the teaching and preaching of hate and division injure us all. In her speeches, Tutu blends this passion for human dignity with humor and personal stories. Tutu is the third child of Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nomalizo Leah Tutu. Making a Difference through Research: Let’s Talk Girl Data Dr. Lynnette Cook, Executive Director, Research Partners Forget big data, let’s talk girl data! Dr. Lynnette Cook will take her audience on a statistical tour of data on poverty, income, education, family status, entrepreneurism, the feminization of poverty and other women’s issues -- offering her insights into this startling data.
