If it is unable to access the Internet or you prefer to install the components yourself you should download these components from Microsoft Downloads (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads) and install them prior to starting the product installation. This product also requires that PDF reader software be installed on your system. All user documentation (with the exception of the release notes document) is delivered in PDF file format. The product installation does not include a PDF reader. Adobe Reader is recommended (http://get.adobe.com/reader/). The PDF reader is not required for the software to function. Important: As of version 4.06, Windows XP SP2 is no longer a supported platform. You must install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) for this upgrade. Service Pack 3 is required for .NET 4.0 Additional Notes: Automatic update notification An Internet connection is required to receive update notifications. If your license does not explicitly exclude checking for updates, the Internet will be accessed when O-Calc Pro starts up. It attempts to access the update site to determine if there is a newer version available. If there is no update available or if it cannot access the site the program continues after a very brief delay. If your license allows automatic updates (default) but you are not receiving the notifications please check for firewall or other network restrictions. Access to the update site uses standard http protocols on port 80. If you receive an update notification there is a button that will launch your Internet browser to access the update site where you can read about the update and then opt to download the installer package. We recommend that you use the Save button to download the update package and run it from the save location rather than using the Run button from the download prompt. Windows 7 program certification The O-Calc Pro product is tested most rigorously on Windows 7 operating systems, both 32 bit and 64 bit. Testing is performed for both product installation and product operation. Additionally, Osmose uses the product internally on its own Windows 7 systems. We are confident that it installs and performs satisfactorily on both Windows 7 and Windows XP. There is no current plan to apply for formal Windows page 2/14 7 certification. MasterCatalog and UserCatalog handling during upgrade installations The Master Catalog is never overwritten. If you wish to update it you should follow the instructions below. If you have made any changes to your Master Catalog or User Catalog these changes will be preserved if you install the newer version as an upgrade. If you wish to discard your changes and upgrade to the latest versions of the Master Catalog or reinitialize your User Catalog to the default (empty) file: 1. Export the Master Catalog and User Catalog to preserve any changes that you have made. This function is performed using commands in the Tools->Catalog Maintenance menu item. 2. Open Windows Explorer and locate and delete the files “%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\OsmosePPL\MasterCatalog.pplc” and/or “%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\OsmosePPL\UserCatalog.pplc”. 3. Skip to instructions below for Repairing Your Installation which will restore the now missing MasterCatalog and/or UserCatalog files from the package. If you have opted to upgrade the Master Catalog please note that Osmose may have made changes to the Master Catalog Load Cases and strongly recommends that you reselect default Load Cases after completing the upgrade. Updating the O-Calc® Pro report templates If you are installing over an earlier version of O-Calc® Pro and have edited the format one of the master report templates (“O-Calc® Pro Analysis Report” template or “O-Calc® Pro Analysis Rpt GO 95” template) an update installation will replace your old version of the template with the new version. If you have made changes to your templates that you wish to preserve you should take the following steps before installing the software update. 1. Make note of any changes that you have made to the old report. 2. Launch O-Calc® Pro. On the main menu, select Help►Folders►All Users Root Folder. This will Open Windows Explorer. Double-click the Reports folder+. This should open the folder where you should recognize the O-Calc® Pro report templates. If you have enabled extension viewing, the file extension will be “.rdlc”. 3. Rename the template file that you have changed to keep the report template or Delete it. 4. Install the software update. Restoring the default report templates If you find that your installed version of one or more of the O-Calc® Pro report templates has been corrupted you can restore the original default version as follows. 1. Launch O-Calc® Pro. On the main menu, select Help►Folders►All Users Root Folder. This will Open Windows Explorer. Double-click the Reports folder+. This should open the folder where you should recognize the O-Calc® Pro report templates. If you have enabled extension viewing the file extension will be “.rdlc”. 2. Delete the corrupted template file. 3. Open the Add or Remove Programs wizard (for Windows XP users:Start > Settings>Control Panel> Add or Remove Programs, for Windows 7/Vista users: Start > Control Panel >Programs and Features) 4. Locate the entry titled “O-Calc® Pro” and click the Change button. This will launch the O-Calc® Pro – Installation Wizard 5. The Welcome screen will display, click Next to pass to the Program Maintenance screen 6. Click the Repair option and then click the Next button, this will start the repair process. 7. When the repair installation is complete click the Finish button to close the wizard. The default report template will now be installed. You can check the Windows Explorer to confirm that the Reports folder (see above) contains a new copy of “O-Calc® Pro Analysis Report”. page 3/14 + Note: In earlier versions of O-Calc® Pro the Help menu may not have the Folders option. If this is the case you can locate the master template files as follows. Windows XP Users – Launch Windows Explorer. On the address bar type (excluding quotes) “%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\OsmosePPL\Reports” and press the Enter key. Windows 7/Vista Users: Launch Windows Explorer. On the address bar type (excluding quotes) “%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\OsmosePPL\Reports” and press the Enter key. This will open the folder where the master template files can be found. Difficulties with Windows 7 Installation Some users have reported difficulties performing installations when downloading from the support site. Two types of problems have been reported: 1. Users start setup but the installation is interrupted when the setup wizard reports that it cannot create the folder x:\Windows\Downloaded Installations\... when extracting the OCalc40.msi file. 2. Users with Norton Internet Security or Norton 360 install download the software but the installer never launches and cannot be found. In the first problem, the user may not have sufficient permissions to perform the installation. One solution to this is to use the Save button when downloading the setup file rather than using the Run button. When you use the Save button you will be prompted for a location to download the setup file. Pick a location (e.g. Desktop) and then click Save again. When the download completes DO NOT click the Run button, click the Open Folder button. A Windows Explorer window will appear and the downloaded file will appear highlighted. Move the mouse cursor over the file name and RIGHT click. Select “Run as Administrator” from the context menu. The setup will launch. If you are prompted for administrator credentials, enter the administrator user name and password and then continue. If the installation still fails consult your IT staff for assistance. In the second problem, Symantec/Norton versions 2009 and up use a technology they have named Insight. This is essentially a web based database lookup that compares what you have downloaded with what Symantec considers safe. If it is not on this “white-list” the downloaded file is flagged as a threat and is quarantined. Osmose Signs its releases with a trusted certificate and makes every effort to get our product release white-listed prior to making them available for download, however we do not wait for the product to be white-listed before making the update available. If you are a Norton user and your downloads are being caught by Norton (in one case a user reported that the downloads were “mysteriously disappearing”) there are a few things that you can try. 1. Make sure that you have the latest updates from Norton. 2. Wait a few days to a week from first notification to upgrade. This will allow time for the “white-listing” processing to be completed. 3. Use the Save button and download the setup from the Osmose site then Open the Norton management console to locate the quarantined download and restore it. You can then run the page 4/14 setup file from the restore location. For further information regarding the issue see the following link on the Norton site: Clarification on WS Reputation 1 detection. Repairing Your Installation If at some point you want to repair your installation, the following steps will ensure a successful repair. You can always run a repair by rerunning the Setup application. When you get past the Welcome screen you will be given the option to Change, Repair or Remove the software. Select Repair. You can also run a repair from the Add or Remove Programs control panel on Windows XP or the Programs and Features control panel on Windows 7 or Vista. It is important that if you use the control panel that you always click the Change button and then click the Repair option from the setup interface that appears. DO NOT click on the Repair button or Repair right-click menu selection or repair link in the Support Information window of the Add or Remove Programs control panel (XP Users only). If you do this you may find that the repair restores a previously installed version of O-Calc Pro. This is a known problem that will be addressed in a future release. Upgrading from O-Calc 3.x If you have previously installed O-Calc 3.x on your system there is no direct upgrade. The product setup will install a new version of O-Calc Pro software on your system side by side with the existing O-Calc 3.x version. If you have created data for poles using O-Calc version 3.x that you want to use with O-Calc Pro software you can extract your 3.x pole information and create O-Calc Pro compatible data files using a Pole Data Upgrade utility that is installed with this product. Refer to the Pole Data Upgrade Guide for instructions. After completing a pole data upgrade it is important that you review the converted pole data and look for “Note:” entries titled “Conversion Warning”. These entries identify data items that have been adjusted. Such items include, among other things: Non-Standard Crossarm adjustments Any equipment with an incline angle Any equipment with a rotation angle different from its offset angle No warnings are issued during the pole data conversion so it is important that you examine the converted pole data. Warning notes do not indicate that any action is required, they simply flag corrections and adjustments that were made to conform to the new pole data model. Note that if you have O-Calc 3.x installations that use networked SQL databases you will be required to extract the data to an mdb file using SQL backup. This backup file can then be used as input to the Pole Data Upgrade Utility. Change History About O-Calc Pro Software Release Version 4.06 New Functions or Features 1. Microsoft .NET framework version 4.0 is now an installation pre-requisite. The installer will attempt to download and install the software if it is not already installed. See User Notes (below). page 5/14 Corrections 1. The installer no longer removes the Master Catalog or User Catalog on uninstall. This was changed to preserve any modifications that the user has made but may not have “backed up” or exported. If the software is uninstalled and reinstalled, it will not overwrite the old catalogs. See Additional Notes (below) for instructions on how to discard changes that you may not wish to retain during an installation. 2. User Notes 1. Windows XP SP2 is no longer a supported platform. You must install XP SP3 for this upgrade. SP3 is required for .NET 4.0. About O-Calc Pro Software Release Version 4.06 New Functions or Features 1. Clear all Filters with a single click. When Filters are on, right click the sunglasses tool and select the Reset All Filters option. Alternatively, from the main menu select View►Reset All Filters. 2. Added “O-Calc® Pro Analysis Rpt GO 95” report. This is a specialized report for poles modeled with GO 95 rules. 3. Added “O-Calc® Pro Safety Factor Summary” report. 4. Added Backwards Compatibility Mode selection to the main menu (Options►Backwards Compatibility Mode). This allows the user to save work in a format compatible with older versions of O-Calc® Pro (4.x only). This sets the output mode for saved poles until it is changed. Corrections 3. The user was unable to add spans when working with span bundles that include a messenger wire. This now behaves as expected. 4. When the Save Pole History Archive option is enabled, the Revision History selection is no longer hidden in Windows7/Vista installations. 5. Mouse scroll wheel function has been restored for Catalog Window navigation 6. The embedded image was lost when a new pole version was created. Corrected behavior retains the state of embedded images in the original file, as opened. When a new version is created and saved, the "Embed Images" option will be set to match that of the original file. 7. In Batch Reporting, when attempting to remove poles from the Poles to Process list the Remove Poles option does not stay enabled. 8. When adding LoadCases, some methods do not prompt when Wind Speed or Ice Thickness have values of -1. The following operations now prompt as expected: a. Right click pole in 3D view, add load case b. Right click pole in Inventory, add load case c. Click 'Add' button 9. After adding objects to the Inventory Window from the Catalog window, the next time you select an object in the Catalog Window the window automatically scrolls to the top of the catalog window. This is inconsistent and is not desired behavior. 10. Anchor % in Anchor Summary report should turn red when value is greater than 100% 11. Spans are not displaying consistently as full spans in the Schematic View. When there are two spans at 90 and 270 degrees these sometimes appear as a single span on the left. 12. Using the double click option to rename a folder in the catalog can create blank folder names. page 6/14 13. When there are multiple loadcases on a pole and one loadcase is renamed in the Inventory, the new name is not displayed in the drop down list. 14. When completely uninstalling OCP the O-Calc Pro Analysis Report.rdlc file remains in the OsmosePPL\Reports folder. 15. Text displayed in controls is clipped (see User Notes below) User Notes 2. Windows Vista and Windows 7 users may experience problems with clipped text in dialogs and messages displayed by O-Calc® Pro. This is a known problem that can be corrected by (re)setting the Windows display text size. To do this: a. Open the Control Panel (Start►Control Panel) b. Open the “Display” control c. Tick the “Smaller – 100% (default)” selection d. Click the Apply button. About O-Calc Pro Software Release Version 4.05 New Functions or Features 6. User License terms have been modified. Two classes of seemingly random application / system crashes were addressed. In one case it was determined that this type of error was caused by hardware drivers that did not properly support Hardware acceleration. The Options->Misc Options menu provides a way to Enable/Disable 3D Hardware rendering. In another case it appears that the continuous flash animation in the 3D rendering was causing application / system crashes when drivers did not properly implement Direct3D. The flash animation has been limited to 5 flashes to help remedy this. One other class of error that presents itself as a Hardware Out of Memory exception was found to be a page 11/14 known Microsoft issue. Users who have installed the .NET framework version 3.5 Service Pack 1 dated prior to March 10, 2009 may potentially have this issue. There is a hotfix from Microsoft to correct this problem. Information about the problem and how to obtain the fix can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967634.
