Zones and Classification
Niagara Escarpment Parks and Open Space System
The Niagara Escarpment Parks and Open Space System (NEPOSS), is a linear system of public lands acquired to protect distinctive features and significant
areas along the Niagara Escarpment. These features may include waterfalls, unique landforms in the Escarpment and special plant communities and animal
habitats. Historical and archaeological sites, often associated with these areas, are also incorporated. The Belfountain Complex is identified as a component
of NEPOSS in the Niagara Escarpment Plan.
Conservation Area Classification
All parks in NEPOSS are assigned a classification based on the predominant
characteristics of the property. The classifications serve to guide the management and
use of the area and ensure the maintenance of a diverse system of natural areas with
different purposes and functions.
• Belfountain Conservation Area is designated as a Recreation class area. This class
provides some of the best recreational environments on the Niagara Escarpment.
• Willoughby Property and Cox Property are designated Natural Environment class
areas. Natural Environment class areas represent a broad range of natural and
cultural resources and provides opportunities for protection as well as opportunities
for low-impact recreational activities.
Conservation Area Zoning
Zoning is a tool used to describe specific geographies, policies and priorities within a
protected area and is an effective method for managing and protecting an area's resources.
Zones are based on CVC’s best understanding of significant natural and cultural attributes as
well as a variety of other values, including existing and future access areas and recreational
activities. Zoning helps land managers prioritize areas for protection and identify the best
locations for appreciation programs and recreational activities. CVC has six main zones:
• Nature Reserve
• Natural Heritage Conservation
• Natural heritage Appreciation
• Cultural Heritage
• Special Management
• Development (Operations, Recreation and Access)
