“I believe that as a veteran
who served our country, Gary
deserves the very best care we
can provide!”
H
ere at Panhandle Home Health, Inc. we take great
pride in our nurses, all of our caregivers and all of our
patients. Recently, we were requested to represent
the state of West Virginia and submit an article and short
story for the nationally published CARING Magazine. This
publication features articles and information pertinent to the
home health and hospice profession and they were seeking
nurses and stories to represent each of the 50 states in
recognition of National Nurses Week.
We submitted an article featuring one of our exceptional
nurses Michelle Ruffner and one of her patients, Gary. This
is the story we submitted:
My name is Michelle Ruffner and I’m a home health nurse for
Panhandle Home Health in Martinsburg, WV. My patient, Gary
Taulton, is a Vietnam War veteran who became a paraplegic while
on active duty. Due to his limited mobility and circulatory issues,
Gary suffers with pressure ulcers. Our nurses have provided
IV therapy at home in addition to complex wound care. Gary’s
doctors rely on our nurses to alert them to any changes in his fragile
condition. Without the home health nurse, he would have no
choice but to leave his home and reside in a skilled nursing facility.
Gary states that without his home health nurse, “I’d be in a lot of
trouble! They keep up with my wounds and stay on top of any new
ones as soon as I get them. They keep in touch with my doctors and
keep me at home where I want to be.” I believe that as a veteran
who served our country, Gary deserves the very best care we can
provide!
A press release from the magazine recently announced
that each of the nurses representing the fifty states have been
nominated to receive the Home Health and Hospice Nurse of
the Year Award. Our very own Michelle Ruffner will represent
West Virginia for this prestigious honor, and will be invited to
attend the National Association of Home Care and Hospice
Convention in Orlando, FL in October of this year.
HERE is where you can help Michelle! The winner is
selected by ballot and YOU can vote!
Voting is open from now until July 9th, and you can vote
up to one time per computer or electronic device. Voting
is really easy; all you have to do is go to this website: www.
nahc.org and find the CARING section on the left hand side
of the page. At the bottom of that section you will see a link
that says “vote here”. Click that link and find West Virginia
and Michelle’s name, hit submit, and you are all set! We
appreciate your support! Let’s make sure Panhandle Home
Health, Michelle, and West Virginia come out on top this
year!
Earlier in the article we mentioned Gary Taulton, a
wonderful man who utilizes Panhandle Home Health, Inc.
to help manage his wounds and improve his quality of life.
Michelle is Gary’s nurse, and he had nothing but wonderful
things to say about her and other nurses who have cared for
him. Gary is a Vietnam veteran who served in the Marine
Corps. He was wounded in Vietnam and is now a paraplegic,
meaning he is paralyzed from the waist down. For the past 1015 years he has suffered from pressure ulcers, which are areas
of damaged skin that are caused by staying in one position for
too long. Michelle sees him two times a week using specialized
dressings that optimize Gary’s wound healing. Gary says that
Michelle always takes great care to pad the damaged skin
continued on the next page
continued from page 1
areas to make sure that he is comfortable. Gary’s wounds will
eventually heal, but because of his physical limitations, new
wounds will develop, so this is an ongoing issue that he will
likely deal with for the rest of his life. Even though Gary is
homebound, he still has quite a personality and admirable
perseverance. He loves to talk about sports and is genuinely
concerned about Michelle and her children, stating that he
feels like they are “family”. Gary is a wonderful patient who
unfortunately deals with his condition and his wounds every
day! He absolutely deserves the very best care, which is one
of the reasons that Panhandle Home Health, Inc. is working
towards implementing a new program to help track and care
for patients with wounds, such as pressure ulcers.
Horizon Homecare Wound Advisor, is a new program
that “enhances wound population management and
standardizes care delivery.” “All information gathered using
Horizon Homecare Wound Advisor flows directly into the
patient’s existing electronic medical record for improved
coordination of care,” according to McKesson staff reports.
This means that when a nurse or caregiver logs on to a
patient’s medical record, it will already be updated with the
patient’s wound history, reminders as to what the patient
needs that day to treat the wounds, and tips as to how to
prevent wounds from occurring. It makes it kind of a one
stop place where caregivers can go to better optimize their
methods and health for their patients. It also makes it easy
for patients to better understand their wounds and their
treatment options. Not only does it help patients and nurses,
but it actually decreases costs for organizations, because it
is more accurate and eliminates redundancy. This is a very
important goal for Panhandle Home Health, Inc., that is why
we are excited to announce that our 2012 CHP’s Puttin’ for
Panhandle Home Health miniature golf tournament helped
us raise $13,200 towards this amazing new program. We want
to thank our major sponsor CoxHollidaPrice LLP, Terry Hess
and JayDee’s Fun Center staff, and our gracious donors for
their help and contributions for a great cause. You can help
us raise funds for this wonderful new program mentioned
above by sending donations to Panhandle Home Health, or
by logging on to our website www.panhandlehomehealth.org
to make a donation electronically.
Have a Safe Summer!
After
A Thank You from Lisa...
a “not so harsh” winter, we
still welcome spring with open arms,
grateful for the new life that is bursting
around us! All that positive energy is
absolutely necessary when we face the
day-to-day challenges of our changing
healthcare system! As the healthcare
world continues to evolve, most people
Lisa R. Bivens, RN
Executive Director
are becoming very educated about their
health and the care that they are receiving from all healthcare providers.
We are all looking for value in whatever we are purchasing, whether it’s a
new car, shoes, a meal, or our healthcare. We want the best for the money
being spent. It should come as no surprise to anyone when we see healthcare systems responding to that reality by addressing the outcomes of the
patients they serve. Home Health is no exception!
At Panhandle Home Health, we work hard to consistently monitor
our patient’s outcomes and try to learn from them, making changes to
some of our processes or programs in order to serve our patients better.
Our Agency’s “snap shot” which is a compilation of data gathered from
all initial assessments completed, helps us to better understand the types
of illnesses we are caring for – so that we can address the most significant
illnesses first. For example, we know from that data that we care for many
patients with wounds that require our attention. Whether it’s a surgical
wound or a pressure ulcer, proper and speedy healing is important, not
just to the patients but to our staff as well! So it should come as no
surprise that a formal wound management program is in the works
for Panhandle Home Health.
This program will benefit a large portion of the Agency’s patient population, making the care that they receive not only effective, but also less costly for the healthcare system. A wound specialist will monitor all patients’ wounds for appropriate progress and
will be available for consultation for the clinical staff or home visits
if necessary. This “real time” evaluation by a wound expert will
provide our patients with great value when it comes to exceptional
healthcare and wound healing!
This is just one example of the great work being done by the
staff here at Panhandle Home Health! Each person is always willing
to do more to benefit the community we serve. We are committed
to making a difference in our patients’ lives. After all, as YOUR
community home health agency, we are caring for our neighbors,
our friends, and our relatives. How could we ever provide anything
less than exceptional care?
The Board of Directors, Professional Advisory Committee and
Staff join me in thanking you for your continued support, whether
it’s your time, talent or treasure. Without this generous community
support, many of our Agency Programs would not be possible! I
sincerely wish each of you a spring and summer filled with new life
and abundant blessings!

2012 PUTTIN’
Raises funds for
Wound Program
T
he clouds parted and the sun came out
for the 4th annual CH’s Puttin’ for
Panhandle Home Health Miniature
Golf Tournament. On Thursday, April 26th,
144 golfers filled the course at Jay Dee’s Fun
Center in Inwood. Even Mayor George Karos
was out for a day of “puttin”.
Registration started at 11:30 followed
by a boxed lunch from Chick-fil-A. There
were raffle items consisting of jewelry from
Bechdel’s, Christian Caine, Redskins tickets
donated by Terry Hess, Southwest airline
tickets and a Rovia Travel Getaway vacation
package and many other wonderful items.
Golfers began taking their places for the shot
gun start at 1PM.
The golfers finished their 18 holes of golf
around 3PM. Following the tournament,
Heavenly Taste Catering was there to serve
a meal consisting of pulled pork, chicken
barbecue, cheesy potatoes, coleslaw, pasta and
brownies. The raffles were drawn and prizes
awarded.
The winners were: 1st place: Around
The Panhandle Magazine, 2nd place: TriState Business Network Team 1, 3rd place:
Eckenrode Nationwide Insurance. This
year prizes were award for the best dressed
individual and team. Charlie Connelly won
a full length mirror donated from Martin
Distributing for his bold and flashy bow tie
golfer attire. First United Bank team took
home compact mirrors and golf event teeshirts for their April Showers Bring May
Flowers theme. The most 6’s went to Tri-State
Business Network Team 3 and most Aces to
Tina Robertson.
Our winner for lowest individual score has
a unique story to tell. Brenda Heller, Certified
Nursing Assistant was the lucky winner of a
drawing to play in the tournament. While
caring for her patient, Heller shared her
news with patient Dr. Ralph Olean and his
longtime friend Dr. Bill Bonifant, who was
there visiting.
These two golf pros instantly began giving
Brenda a lesson, right there in Dr. Olean’s
home. Using Dr. Olean’s 30+ year old putter,
Brenda listened to their advice and practiced
for a few minutes. Dr. Olean insisted that
Brenda take his putter to practice with at
home that evening. When ready to leave her
patient Dr. Olean told Brenda to “practice”,
and Dr. Bonifant said “not to practice”.
Little did Brenda know that she had just
received some of the best golfing advice in
Martinsburg. For over 30 years of owning
his own dental practice, Dr. Olean would
practice on his 5-hole putting green outside
his office, “to kill time between patients,” he
said. Dr. Olean stated, “I could tell right away
that Brenda could be a very good golfer if she
decided to take up golf as a sport.”
Brenda was one of 4 individuals with the
lowest score and entered a “putt-off” on the
4th hole at JayDee’s Fun Center. Shown with
her trophy, “a miniature red jacket”, Brenda
is still in shock over winning the tournament
as the lowest individual score, she states” I
hadn’t played for about 4 years.
Each year the competition has grown with
each golfer and team. All golfers receive a
ditty bag full of promotional items from local
businesses. Many thanks to our major sponsor
CoxHollidaPrice and all the local businesses
that generously support our event every year
with golfers, raffle items and prizes.
“We couldn’t do this event without
everyone’s support. I would be remiss if I didn’t
thank our wonderful committee of volunteers
whose time and dedication mean more than
words can say,” said Jen Stanley, co-chair of
the tournament. Our committee is made up
of local community-minded individuals who
come together each year and plan for the most
exciting fundraiser of the year. We couldn’t
do it without our fearless leader Chris Johnson
who keeps us on task.
“The proceeds from the tournament will
be used to help us develop a new wound
program for our patients,” said Johnson. As
a non-profit partner agency of the United
Way, Panhandle Home Health looks to
the community for donations and support
to expand programs to serve their patient
population.
The agency specializes in skilled nursing,
occupational/speech/physical therapies and
medical social services. According to Lisa
Bivens, executive director of Panhandle
Home Health, “events like this enable us to
enhance the services we provide and allow
the organization to continue to provide the
high quality care that our patients expect and
deserve!
When the community comes together
in this way to support our endeavors, it is
such an encouragement to us! It tells us
that the community not only supports our
organization, but also that they too believe in
and appreciate what we do!”
Thank You
Panhandle Home Health would like to thank the following businesses and individuals for their
generous support of our 2012 miniature golf event, CHP’s Puttin’ for Panhandle Home Health. Your
generous donation of time, treasure, and talent make a difference toward ensuring that we continue
our mission of providing health care services in the comfort and privacy of the patient’s home!

UNITED WAY Day of Caring
September 11, 2012
The United Way’s annual Day of
Caring is a great way for members of the
community to see first-hand the needs
in our community and to experience the
satisfaction that comes from helping address
those needs. Community organizations, like
Panhandle Home Health work year-round
to help our neighbors, but resources are
limited. When people take time out of their
busy schedules, when service organizations
tackle tough projects and when businesses
donate building materials, the impact on the
community is immeasurable. Most of all, the
organizations and individuals who receive
the assistance are grateful for the long lasting
difference the volunteers made.
Panhandle Home Health has had one
such year-round project for a local family.
Local volunteers donated their time, talents
and treasures to help the Shafer family by
tearing down and rebuilding the deck on
their trailer. Mrs. Shafer commented, “I
was so happy the volunteers showed up to
tear down the old deck the same day that
we were served with a notice to repair it.”
Within two weeks the old was torn down
and a new one built in its place. Mrs. Shafer
stated, “I’m just so tickled with the new deck
– I can’t stop going outside to sit and enjoy
it.”
