Speaker—Marshall Sperbeck
Dick Prater
introduced our
guest speaker,
Marshall Sperbeck, Sacramento Hornets new
head football coach.
A native of Sacramento, Sperbeck
graduated from Valley High
School. He later played at the University of Nevada from 1981-82
and led the team to a pair of winning seasons while throwing for
2,425 yards.
Following college, he had two
stints in NFL training camps before joining the Foothill staff as an
assistant coach in 1985. He
coached the quarterbacks and receivers and was later elevated to
offensive coordinator before becoming head coach in 1992.
Sperbeck earned a bachelor’s of
science degree in physical education from Nevada in 1984 and later
added a master’s of education from
United States International in
1989.
.
Prior to coming to the Hornets,
Sperbeck was the head football
coach at Foothill College in Los
Altos, Calif., for 15 years, prior to
coming to Sac State. During that
time, he produced a 109-53 overall
record and led the Owls to 11 bowl
games. Last season, Foothill was
10-1 overall and tied for the Northern California Football Association
title.
Sperbeck said his focus was on
recruiting student athletes that
want to go to college, that this will
affect the direction the team will
be going in.
President Bud presented Sperbeck
with a great bottle of wine!

Bell Ringers!
First we had John Bell who
recently returned from 6
weeks in Australia and New Zealand. He
bestowed the Pres with a banner from the
Christchurch Rotary club
in New Zealand, a Fly
hat, a Kangaroo scrotum,
candy, and a boomerang
with a ―no return‖ policy. Who said John didn’t have a sense of humor?
Next we had Viggo Mathiesen, back from a
trip to the East Coast, visiting his daughter in
Baltimore, AND taking a trip to Intercourse,
PA, while back east. Of course, he HAD to
bring our illustrious
President Bud a hat
with THAT on it!!!
And just WHERE will
Mr. Excitement wear
THAT hat when ―out
and about‖?????
Lastly, we had Tony Sebra who returned
from a trip to China and the Bahamas. Let’s
see if I got this right – he brought the Pres a
subway map, TV guide,
location of a silk factory, embroidery instructions, and a Beijing
Olympic hat.
Now please correct me,
but didn’t Mr. Excitement mention he wasn’t into hats at the beginning of his term?
That hats were the Big Weill’s thing? I’d
sure like to think that I was the only one
paying attention for a change!

Christmas Trivia!

In Italy they have no Christmas trees, instead they decorate small wooden pyramids
with fruit.
 In Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela, it is customary for the streets to be blocked
off on Christmas eve so that the people can roller-skate to church.
 An artificial spider and web are often included in the decorations on Ukrainian Christmas trees. A spider web found on Christmas morning is believed to bring good luck.
 It is a British Christmas tradition that a wish made while mixing the Christmas pudding will come true only if the ingredients are stirred in a clockwise direction.
 Sending red Christmas cards to anyone in Japan constitutes bad etiquette, since funeral
notices there are customarily printed in red.
A Southern Christmas
In a small southern town there was a "Nativity Scene" that showed great skill and talent had
gone into creating it. One small feature bothered me. The three wise men were wearing
firemen's helmets.
Totally unable to come up with a reason or explanation, I left. At a "Quik Stop" on the edge
of town, I asked the lady behind the counter about the helmets. She exploded into a rage,
yelling at me, "You darn Yankees never do read the Bible!"
I assured her that I did, but simply couldn't recall anything about firemen in the Bible.
She jerked her Bible from behind the counter and ruffled thru some pages, and finally
jabbed her finger at a passage. Sticking it in my face she said,
"See, it says right here, 'The three wise man came from afar.' ―
Live simply,
Love generously,
Care deeply,
Speak kindly.......
Life isn't about waiting for the
storm to pass...
It's about learning to dance in
the rain.
