Principal’s Message
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence
Last week the seventh annual National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence
occurred on Friday 17 March. The day is held annually to provide an opportunity for
every whole school community to 'take a stand together' against bullying and violence.
The day is an initiative of the Safe and Supportive School Communities Working Group
made up of all Australian education authorities. The day provides a focus for our
school, and all schools, to say Bullying. No Way! and also to strengthen our existing
messages that bullying and violence at school are not okay at any time. At this week’s
assembly, I discussed three important elements regarding bullying:
“What is bullying?” Bullying is an ongoing and repeated misuse of power in
relationships involving a pattern of harmful verbal, physical or social behaviour. Single
incidents and conflicts between individuals, both spoken and physical, are not defined
as bullying.
“What do you do if you are being bullied?” If a student feels able, telling the person
bullying that what they are doing is not ok is a powerful step (though this is not always
possible). Most important is for the student to tell an adult here at school – an adult that
student knows and has trust and confidence in. This is not “dobbing”, it is responsible
reporting – especially when the student knows and feels that what is happening isn’t
right. Sometimes finding that adult can be difficult, so telling someone at home who can
get in touch with the school (phone or email) is another step in responsible reporting.
“What does INSS do to help prevent bullying?” Research shows that a positive
learning culture and environment, based on shared values, is one important factor in
reducing and limiting bullying. This is one reason our school is proudly a Positive
Behaviour for Learning school. Additionally, we respond as quickly as possible to
instances of suspected or identified bullying – which is why timely responsible reporting
is also so important. Our school also has a Bullying Policy, as part of our Responsible
Behaviour Plan for Students, which is based on and informed by current research and
resources.
Two of our four INSS ROCKS Star values – Be Respectful and Kind – help to promote
and provide a climate of responsible and respectful relationships and demonstrate that
at our school, we stand together and say Bullying. No Way! For more information, the
Bullying. No Way website (http://bullyingnoway.gov.au/) is full of great ideas and
resources.

KIDSMATTER Because Kids Matter
Did you know that one in seven children experience mental health
problems and only a quarter of those receive professional help?
Children who are mentally healthy are able to enjoy and flourish from
family life, relationships and educational opportunities. They arrive at
our school each day ready to learn and are likely to be more
successful learners. We hold the vision that all of our children will
develop and maintain good mental health both now and as they grow
towards adulthood. This is a particularly important focus for our staff
here at INSS as we support our kids in many ways to thrive in an ever
changing world and as they face life’s inevitable challenges.
From today, we commence the School Colour Fun Run
which is as a major fundraiser this term so we do ask for
your support. The more money we raise the more we can
provide for the students through vital school projects.
KidsMatter Primary is an Australian mental health promotion,
prevention and early intervention initiative that is being adopted by
primary schools around our nation. This year the KidsMatter team at
INSS is continuing to lay solid foundations in developing a school
wide framework that prioritises the areas by which we can make a
difference to our students’ mental health and wellbeing. We are
looking forward to working with the whole school community (staff,
children, families) over the coming months to build on the great work
that is already being done at our school. There will be opportunities for parents to have a say and give
input, so please take advantage of these as they arise.
Students obtain donations from family and friends, earn
exciting reward prizes according to the amount of money
raised, before it all ends in a blast of colour... the School
Colour Fun Run!
We value you and your children’s ideas and opinions as we seek to make our school an even more
inviting, supportive and positive place to be. If you would like more information on KidsMatter please visit:
www.kidsmatter.edu.au
The School Colour Fun Run will be held on 27th April starting at 2pm.
We do ask that your child/ren bring a spare change of clothes to school, most
importantly a plain white shirt. The colour powder is made of high quality corn starch
with permitted food colours. It is non-toxic, biodegradable, skin safe, environmentally
friendly, and super fun!
Mayor and Minister Visit
We will be having a special parade followed by a tree planting ceremony on
Wednesday 29th March for Year 2 to 6 students in the hall from 9:00am. Ipswich
North State School will play host to Mayor Paul Pisasale, Councillor Cheryl
Bromage, and Minister of Environment Steven Miles who will speak with our
students about environmental sustainability and its importance for our community.
Our lovely P&C will be providing catering for 50 guests, while our ROCKSTAR
School Leaders will be presenting a PowerPoint to support the message of
environmental sustainability at INSS.
Rewards Day
Week 10 students who have less than 3 major incidents and/or no suspensions will be able to attend
our Jumping Castle Rewards Day! Only one week to go!
