CAPITOL STEPS Sunday, October 2, 2016 5PM, $32, Van leaves Loose at 4PM
Cleverly putting the “mock” in democracy, The Capitol Steps began as a group of
U.S. Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that
employed them. And there is never any shortage of fresh, comedic material. Since
they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded over 30 albums, including their latest,
How to Succeed in Congress Without Really Lying. This election year is comic gold
for this group of musical parodists.
JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG
Sunday, November 6, 2016 3PM, $46, Van leaves Loose at 2pm
As the world commemorates the 75th anniversary of World War II, and as politics
continues to infiltrate human rights and social justice issues worldwide, L.A. Theatre
Works tours one of the great courtroom dramas of the last century: Judgment at
Nuremberg. Originally a riveting teleplay, Judgment at Nuremberg is both surprising
and unsettling. The American-led tribunals were formed to prosecute those accused of
war crimes committed during WWII against Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, people who
were mentally and physically handicapped, and those considered inferior to the Aryan Race. The
themes explored in the play cover how compassion can become secondary to the rule of law, how
human rights are compromised during times of conflict; and how politics plays a role in dealing with
genocide – issues which remain relevant today.

JACKIE ROBINSON STORY Thursday, February 2, 2017,
7PM, $18, Van leaves Loose at 6pm
It was no accident that Jackie Robinson was chosen as the first ballplayer to break
the color barrier in the sport known as America’s pastime. There were plenty of
good athletes in the Negro Leagues: some maybe even better than Jackie. But
when Branch Rickey decided to add a black person to the Brooklyn Dodgers, he
knew that individual had to be special. He had to be strong enough to stand up to
the teammates who would ridicule him, the pitchers who would throw at him and
the fans who would send him threats. He had to be able to turn the other cheek,
to show that he was the bigger man and to prove that he could be everybody’s hero. This play with
music by Mad River Theater Works shows the events that shaped Jackie Robinson’s character, his
struggle to gain acceptance, and the tremendous obstacles he overcame on his way to changing the
face of our nation and our national pastime.
